Heritage Language Instruction

The UCLA National Heritage Language Resource Center and Center for World Languages have developed five online modules focusing on heritage language instruction for teachers whose classes include heritage language (HL) students. The modules target classroom settings that enroll HL students only as well as those that enroll both HL and second language learners.

The modules are self-paced and consist of videos, readings and exercises. There will not be any live interaction with an instructor.

Each of the five modules consists of five to eight lessons, and each lesson ends with a Lesson Assignment. The Centers will not be grading or providing feedback on the Lesson Assignments. Most lessons also include between one and three Thought Exercises; once you have completed these, you can immediately access answers to multiple choice questions or our suggested answers for open-ended questions. We recommend you do all the Thought Exercises because they provide valuable feedback and add important information to the lesson topics.

Module I

Key Concepts and Pedagogical Approaches in Heritage Language Teaching

The first module focuses on foundational concepts of the field, including characteristics associated with heritage speakers, definitions of "heritage language learner," and pedagogical strategies that meet the needs of these learners.

Module II

Understanding and Meeting the Language Needs of Heritage Language Learners

The second module aims to develop a detailed understanding of what HL learners can and cannot do with their HL, including in terms of register and dialect. Strategies for addressing these language needs are also included.

Module III

Differentiated Instruction: Responding to the Needs of Individual Learners

The third module introduces the principles and practices of differentiated instruction and discusses their application to heritage language learners.

Module IV

Strategies for Teaching Mixed Classes

The fourth module explores strategies and approaches that are useful for teachers of mixed heritage language/second language learner classes.

Module V

Tying it all together: Principles of Project-Based Learning

The fifth module describes the principles and practices of project-based learning (PBL), including the challenges of implementing PBL and sample projects.

Access the Modules

To access the Teaching Heritage Languages modules, follow the instructions below:

  1. Visit https://ccle.ucla.edu/

  2. Click the Login button in the upper right corner.
  3. Login button
  4. Click the “Need a UCLA Logon ID?” link.
  5. Login text from website
  6. Check the box for the Acceptable Use Policy and click next.

  8. Check the last option “I do not have a UCLA Identification Number” and click next
  9. Identification number text from website
  10. Follow the website’s instructions to create a Logon ID and password.

  11. Once the Logon ID is created, log into the CCLE system (https://ccle.ucla.edu/). This is an important step.

  12. Once you have logged into the system, send an email to cwl@international.ucla.edu and request access to the STARTALK Online Modules and provide the email address you used to create your Logon ID. Specify that you are enrolling through the STARTALK website.
