The Cooperative Learning Workshop is the result of the action research of seven teachers, including two middles school teachers, four high school teachers and one college instructor. The two study questions for the action research are: 1) What are effective cooperative-activities to achieve student-centered learning? and, 2) What are the principals and techniques to design the activities?

These teachers worked together to design twenty-five activities for various age-level and proficiency-level students. All of the activities were implemented in their own classrooms. The student interaction and learning of each activity were filmed. Based on the student surveys, learning results, and teacher self-reflections, the activities were further modified and revised. The process and result of the action research have helped refine and articulate the principles and techniques to develop creative cooperative-activities. The workshop format and content was piloted in two face-to-face, whole-day programs in Dallas and in Houston. The feedback and evaluation from two hundred and thirty participants are positive and helpful in improving the workshop.

The Cooperative Learning Workshop familiarizes teachers with the learner-centered approaches as well as the cooperative learning principals and techniques. The conceptual framework is illustrated through actual classroom activities. The workshop presents twenty-five cooperative-learning activities with detailed activity plans consisting of objectives, proficiency-levels, preparation process, instructions and worksheets. Fifteen of the activities are presented with video clips to demonstrate step-by-step implementation and student-centered cooperative learning in classrooms. Both the video clips and activity plans are downloadable.
