STARTALK 2016 Workshop Wikispace: Performance Assessment-Based Instruction for Hindi and Urdu Teachers

This Wikispace classroom was designed to provide online support to STARTALK’s workshop on Performance Assessment-Based Instruction for Hindi and Urdu teachers held at Columbia University in March 2016 and is now public for other trainers to use. The Wikispace includes workshop training materials, Hindi- and Urdu-specific sample classroom instructional materials, links to authentic multimedia resources in Hindi and Urdu, and pre- and post-workshop assignments created to strengthen participants’ understanding of the concepts discussed during the workshop. The training materials include PDF documents, online links, and research papers outlining: ACTFL speaking proficiency guidelines for Hindi and Urdu; characteristics of Integrated Performance Assessment; strategies on designing effective classroom assessment; learning and instructional differences between Hindi and Urdu Heritage Language Learners (HLLs) and Foreign Language Learners (FLLs); and the STARTALK-endorsed principles for effective teaching and learning. The Wikispace also includes audio recordings, especially created as part of this workshop, that explain the STARTALK principles in Hindi and Urdu. The PowerPoint presentation on designing performance based assessment used onsite during the workshop is also available on this website. As part of their three pre-workshop assignments, participants reviewed and discussed ACTFL proficiency guidelines, STARTALK principles, and posted examples of performance tasks. Their discussion posts and some final projects demonstrating performance assessment based lesson plans can also be viewed on this Wikispace.
