Dari Infrastructure Building Project

The principle goal of this project is to provide teachers of Dari, in particular, and all other novice teachers, in general, with resources to teach courses at the Novice-Mid to Intermediate-High levels of proficiency. Each course comprises 60 contact hours and will target students at grade levels K-8. STARTALK Model Curriculum and Learning Plan templates have been used to develop these resources. The curricula and learning plans are thematic and content-based, which reflects STARTALK endorsed principles. More specifically, the project consists of:

  1. Curriculum: Through the theme of “a trip to Afghanistan and participating in Nowruz festival,” students will learn about major historical events, landmarks, family, and social life of the Dari language and culture. While the themes and topics are the same across all levels, tasks vary to match students’ proficiency levels. In order to provide teachers with flexibility to select the right curriculum for their course, based on their students’ level of proficiency, we have kept the listening and speaking curriculum separate from reading and writing. As such, each course has two curricula, one for listening/speaking and one for reading/writing.

  2. Learning Plans: Each course contains 20 learning plans for listening and speaking and 20 learning plans for reading and writing, for a total of 40 each. The 2016 STARTALK learning plan template has been used to develop all learning plans.

  3. Instructional Videos: Videos will serve as a means of teacher training and professional development. Teachers will become familiarized with best practices through watching and listening to explanations of concepts with concrete examples and modeling in Dari language at the Novice and Intermediate levels. The videos reflect the following STRARTALK endorsed-principles:
    • Implementing a Standards-Based and Thematically Organized Curriculum
    • Facilitating a Learner-Centered Classroom
    • Comprehensible Input for Instruction
    • Integrating Culture, Content, and Language in a World Language Classroom
    • Adapting and Using Age-Appropriate Authentic Materials
    • Performance-Based Assessment
