    Summary

    The 2020 STARTALK Chinese STEAM & Culture Summer Academy is a three-week program integrating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) into the learning of the Chinese language and culture. The program will offer 60 elementary school students an intense but fun and engaging experience. The program is comprised of daily language, cultural, STEAM activities, two one-day field trips, and a final performance day. It is open to all students from kindergarten to fifth grade (novice low to novice high/intermediate-low proficiency levels) in Prince George's County, Maryland and its neighboring areas; lessons are taught primarily in Chinese. Our theme this year is "The Chesapeake Bay - A Home for Many," in which students learn about the Chesapeake Bay, the animals, and plants that depend on it, its environmental impact, and pollution solutions they can encourage in their communities.

    Summary

    AKEEP STARTALK: “Catch the K-Wave!” is a 3-week (15 days) from 8:20 am to 3 pm non-residential program provided by the Alabama-Korea Education & Economic Partnership (AKEEP) to teach Korean language and culture to thirty-three (33), diverse learners, both heritage and non-heritage rising 6th – 8th graders. An application and in-person interview process will group students based on their language acquisition and proficiency level so that we can target their performance levels from Novice Low to High of the ACTFL language levels upon completion of the program. 102 instructional hours including 2-hour graduation ceremony and reception with 90% target language immersion will maximize a student’s performance and better assess the program’s outcomes through our 3-tiered proficiency levels and 4 specific language modes for teaching, learning, and a project platform.
    They will compare and relate to youth cultures in Korea vs America and learn authentic language using popular K-pop and K-drama in our theme, Catch the K-Wave with teen series. Finally, they will perform practical presentational skills like arts, dance, drama, and skits using the middle schoolers’ interpretive culture, currently popular K-pop songs and K-dramas, to communicate with their friends and family in the Korean language and culturally appropriate manner.

    The Virginia Beach STARTALK Academies seek to provide easily accessible, free opportunities for immersive language and culture learning to students throughout the school division, reflecting the diverse learners in our community. 45 fifth grade students will be selected by lottery for each of the two novice language strands: Chinese and Russian. Up to 15 students from each language from last summer’s program will participate in advanced classes. The program will be held from June 24 to July 18, 2019, Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM -12:00 PM (minus July 4th) totaling 62 instructional hours.

    The STARTALK Hindi and Urdu Program Immersion Program will run from July 8 till July 26, 2019. The
    program will enroll 50 students for Hindi and Urdu language, 25 for Hindi and 25 for the Urdu language whose
    proficiency will vary from Novice to Intermediate. The instructional hours will be from 9.00 am to 3.00pm
    for three weeks onsite. A post-program component in terms of onsite classes for Hindi and Urdu languages in the school district will be provided for our students. The theme of the program is " Let's Go Somewhere". The curriculum follows the backward design model and at the completion of the three-week program, students will be able to perform tasks in Novice to Intermediate range in accordance with the ACTFL Performance Guidelines for k-12 students(1999).

    Summary

    The STARTALK Arabic summer program held at the University of Cincinnati is a 4-week intensive program (June 17 –July 12) designed for high school seniors, rising seniors and juniors at the beginning level of study. The number of students admitted to the program is 18. The program consists of 90 hours of instruction in addition to field trips. At the end of the program students will be able to perform at the Novice Mid/Novice High level according to the NCSSFL-ACTFL GLOBAL CAN-DO BENCHMARKS. Upon successful completion of the program students will earn high school credit according to the schools and five semester hours of college credit.
    Students are preparing for an end of program performance. They will present the festivities of a wedding ceremony.

    Summary

    Our program outcome is to recruit 12 fluent speakers of Chinese and Korean at the novice teaching level (pre-service) to take nine undergraduate quarter credits towards Washington state teacher certification. Teacher candidates will be enrolled in one of CityU of Seattle's Alternative Routes to teacher certification program. The face to face part of the program runs 15 days (June 29-July 19), with a pre-program component (June 22-28) for a total of 90 instructional hours, not including outside assignments and the pre-program online component. Within the program are 9 half days of lab school in which teacher candidates teach in the morning and attend certification classes in the afternoon. During lab school, instructors and master mentors observe and note teaching behaviors for discussion during a working lunch. After the summer program, teacher candidates will take an additional 14 credits during the academic year, completing student teaching by the end of spring quarter and taking and passing the edTPA in June. Teacher candidates will then apply for a Washington State Residency Teaching Certificate. During the certification program, teacher candidates will also be eligible to take the Designated World Language endorsement test to be certified to teach Chinese or Korean.

    Summary

    Our STARTALK camp serves 80 students from Anchorage area schools in grades 1-8, mostly at the Novice-Low proficiency level with some at Novice-Mid. Twenty of the students are from our second grade immersion program and will serve as ”language models” in the sessions. The camp provides 55 instructional hours at 5.5 hours per day. An afterschool Chinese intensive program at Scenic Park operates three hours/week for six weeks into the 2019-2020 school year, serving up to 40 students, some of whom attended camp. Student outcomes include: increased Chinese language skills, increased knowledge of and appreciation for Chinese culture, and intention to continue Chinese studies through secondary school.

    Summary

    This three-week (90 hours) hybrid teacher training program will prepare sixteen new and returning secondary and post-secondary teachers of Arabic, Persian, Portuguese, and Russian and provide them with the knowledge and practicum opportunities to design and deliver curricula and lessons based on backward design and STARTALK-endorsed principles for effective teaching and learning. The focus of the program will be on thematically organized performance-based units of instruction in a learner-centered classroom. Successful participants will earn three units of graduate level college credit. Participants will also learn about the steps that are necessary to become a credentialed teacher in the state of California and will be given an opportunity to attend an additional 40 hours of professional development through California World Language Project and will be on a path of becoming fellows of California World Language Project upon completing the final module. After the summer program and under the supervision of the camp directors, participants will teach the follow-up sessions for high school students on five Saturdays (one 3-hour session per month).

    Summary

    The STARTALK Performance Assessment Training Program at the Center for Applied Linguistics uses a blended online and face-to-face format to train up to 40 STARTALK educators representing all grade and experience levels and STARTALK languages on the fundamentals of performance-based assessment within the STARTALK context. The program will consist of seven online modules, two webinars, and a three-day face-to-face workshop for a total of 41 instructional hours over the course of 7 continuous weeks.

    Participants who complete the program will develop performance assessment tasks, adapt rating rubrics, create self-assessment tools for students, and create a standards- and curriculum-based assessment plan with performance objectives. Participants will be prepared to continue to develop these tools and integrate best practices in assessment with best practices in instruction into their teaching. After active instruction ends, the online modules will remain available as a continued reference and for sharing materials and resources.

    Summary

    The STARTALK STEAM-Integrated Chinese Summer Program at Hope Chinese Charter School (HCCS) will engage 48 rising-grade 2-8 students, proficiency levels ranging from Novice-mid to Intermediate-mid, in a Chinese immersion environment for four weeks (114 instructional hours) through a series of integrative and interdisciplinary language learning experiences with STEAM subjects and activities. "Panda Panpan’s Friends around the World" is the theme for the program, which is an extension from our previous STARTALK summer program theme “Welcome to Panda Panpan’s Bamboo Garden!”. Students will be taken on a grand tour of four major continents and spotlight the diverse cultures in academic topics covering gourmet, wildness, architecture, and arts. The program and its curriculum will provide enriched opportunities for the learners to apply Chinese language skills in real-life connected scenarios for cultural understanding and practices, giving them a deeper understanding of people around the world and encouraging them to think of themselves as a global citizen. At the end of the program, the students will perform at the target proficiency levels (Novice-high to Intermediate-high), and achieve all the program learning goals in interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication.
