    The STARTALK Discover Russian Teacher Program is a two-week (July 16-27, 2018) teacher training program located on the campus of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County, Virginia. The theme of the Teacher Program will be “A Roadmap for Teaching and Learning Russian using the World-Readiness Standards”, and it will provide 15 teachers of Russian with instruction six hours a day for 12 days. During this period, teachers will learn to deliver a standards-based instructional program at the K-12 level in Russian. Participants will create their own learning plans for their classrooms, while keeping within the limits of their state and district guidelines. They will also explore new avenues with their students that will allow them to reach their final destination—Russia and Russian!

    Summary

    The Middlebury School of Russian STARTALK program will enroll 16 participants, who are middle/high school teachers and graduate students in Russian, in a residential program that will last 12 days. Required 5-day module will introduce participants to main SLA concepts and STARTALK principles for effective teaching. A week-long optional online language-learning module will support participants whose Russian language proficiency is Advanced Mid or lower in transitioning to the required Russian-only STARTALK environment at Middlebury Summer Russian School.
    By the end of the program, participants will develop or significantly improve their understanding of the fundamentals of second language acquisition theories as they apply to teaching Russian, and gain hands-on experience with STARTALK-endorsed teaching principles, which inform curriculum development, lesson planning, task design and performance-based assessment.
    The participants will also have an opportunity to expand their professional networks and practice Russian language during program sessions as well as during formal and informal interactions with the Middlebury Russian School’s faculty and students.

    Pitt STARTALK will be administered by the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian and East European Studies (REES) and offer an intensive four-week residential program from June 17 to July 13, 2018, with 160 formal and informal instructional hours for 20 students entering grades 10 through 12. REES is partnering with three high schools that offer academic year Russian language programs (Pittsburgh Brashear High School, Pritzker College Prep, and The Noble Academy) to recruit participants. The curriculum will be based on the theme “Soon to Russia!”, through which the Pitt STARTALK students will prepare to spend an academic year studying abroad in Russia. Instruction will be performance-based and emphasize acquisition of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, with a goal of ACTFL Novice Mid to Novice High proficiency across modalities for students in Russian I and Intermediate Low proficiency for students in Russian II. Other anticipated outcomes include increased cultural knowledge and college readiness.

    The UCLA National Heritage Language Resource Center will offer a one-month teacher workshop (three weeks: online material; one week: face-to-face collaboration) on strategies for creating a macro-based PBL curriculum for heritage language learners (HLLs). We will accept 24 participants who will spend 40 instructional hours over a week at UCLA, preceded by 30-50 hours of online work, including time spent working on assignments, and also time as needed during and after the workshop for online consultation with mentors and instructors. Participants will demonstrate an ability to apply principles of project-based learning by designing a Standards- based unit that is appropriate for HLLs with differing proficiency levels and needs. They will apply knowledge gained from presentations, discussions, and exercises on HLL characteristics, differentiated instruction, Standards-based instruction, project-based instruction, and backward design. Four former workshop participants who have implemented innovative projects and materials suitable to HLLs into their programs will be invited to return as mentors.

    Summary

    The Fresno STARTALK "Oriental Express" Chinese program takes 40 students grades 3-8 on a three-week journey to China via high-speed rail. In this program, the students will learn Chinese language and culture "visiting" different places in China. We primarily enroll non-heritage beginning level students in a half day program and students participate in fun and engaging language and cultural activities such as dance and kung fu all in a immersion setting. The camp total duration is approx. 60 hours.

    Summary

    Arizona State University (ASU) will provide an intensive, 3-week, 4.5-classroom-hour/day, non-residential program in elementary Russian for 28 participants in grades 8-12 from Central Arizona, bringing them from proficiency 0 to Novice Mid in speaking, listening, and reading. STARTALK participants will work in small groups in intensive sessions designed and provided by the STARTALK team on the campus of ASU and, by video uplink, with the faculty, activity guides, and host families of the concurrently running Russian language program in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in ASU’s Critical Languages Institute (CLI). Having STARTALK participants interact with CLI Russian students, in both domestic and abroad programs, is part of the larger strategy of academic mentoring intended to steer participants into the Central Arizona Russian Proficiency pipeline -- a network of high-school instructors and advisors, state university advisors and instructors, and CLI career and grant advisors who work one-on-one with participants to plot out pathways from STARTALK to high-school Russian, to NSLI-Y, to college Russian and CLS or CLI, to summer and semester-long study abroad with NSEP, Fulbright, or private funding, with the goal of supporting participants through to advanced or superior levels of Russian by the time they receive their BA. Bringing together faculty and staff from Arizona school districts’ Russian programs, ASU’s Russian program, and ASU’s summer intensive program at CLI, ASU’s Russian STARTALK program will serve as a hub for Russian instruction and Russian study-abroad programs in Central Arizona and the southwest.

    The Arabic Summer Academy is an intensive program that welcomes high school students from around Boston to learn Arabic and explore the cultures of the Arabic-speaking world in an engaging and supportive environment. The program creates a dynamic academic environment where students from a variety of backgrounds can express their full selves, build communicative skills, and develop an ethic of lifelong learning as global citizens. The Arabic Summer Academy is a 17-day (85-hour) non-residential program, and it produces 40 graduates (grades 9-12) who have reached proficiency between the Novice Mid and Novice High levels in Arabic.

    The 2018 STARTALK DCPS Language and Culture Institute program will serve 100 DCPS students in Middle and High School (grades 6-8 and 9-12) in a 5 week Chinese instruction program beginning June 25 and ending July 27, 2018. Students will receive between 120 and 132 hours of instruction and will earn a 1.0 World Language Credit. Students will not only receive quality language instruction, but will put their language and cultural learning to use in various opportunities that only the nation's capital can offer through partnership with a variety of embassies, museums, and cultural organizations who will make learning come alive for students. The program will culminate with a final presentation where students have an opportunity to demonstrate all they have learned and celebrate d Chinese cultures.

    This 3-week STARTALK CHINESE IMMERSION ACADEMY will engage 30 fourth and fifth graders with the theme "Thoughtful and Caring Citizens Every Day" offering cognitively challenging social studies content, functional language and engaging activities as the anchor for language learning with authentic multi-disciplinary connections. During 90 instructional hours, non- heritage learners will progress toward novice-mid proficiency levels in the communication modes of listening and speaking with minimal emphasis on reading and writing. Heritage speakers will advance toward intermediate-low proficiency level in listening and speaking modes with more focus on literacy skills of reading and writing. Rising 1st graders will attend for 45 hours and will continue their yearlong language immersion experience or may be introduced to Chinese for the first time. This Academy serves as an initial step for some, while offering a supportive and ongoing experience for others, creating interest and momentum toward building an established long-sequence pipeline for multiple Chinese academic year programs in Blue Valley Schools.
