    Summary

    The Gonzaga University Startalk Chinese Program provides instruction in Chinese to novice learners, both true beginners and students with some prior proficiency in Chinese. The program will be divided into two sessions, one for elementary school students and one for middle and high school students. To make the classroom activities relevant to students and motivate them in their learning, each session is organized around a theme; the theme for the elementary school session is “My Family, Your Family,” and the theme for the middle & high school session is “My Homestay in China.” By the end of the program, students in the elementary school session will be able to speak about themselves and their family members, and to interact with others to exchange information about the topic of the family. Students in the middle and high school classes will be able to conduct daily interactions in the language, such as meeting and greeting others, introducing themselves, and exchanging information about their likes and dislikes, their family, their school, their friends and their city. There will be 48 contact hours (42 contact hours for the elementary school session) and the program will last for three weeks, from June 19 to July 7, meeting five days per week, from 9am - noon (on Thursdays the middle and high school classes will run until 2pm). There is no class on the July 4 holiday. In addition to language-learning, there are cultural activities including singing, arts and crafts, games and cooking. Students in the high school program are eligible to participate in an on-line continuation class after the face to face component ends. For high school students who are interested, we will help you petition your high school to receive high school credit for the session.

    Summary

    Housed in the heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown, the Mandarin Institute San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) STARTALK Middle and High School Program provides 36 students with a truly authentic, immersive learning environment designed to promote verbal skills and to imbue students with the confidence to use their language skills in real world situations for meaningful communication.

    During the three week program, students will participate in six hours of engaging language study each day which includes classroom time, cultural units, mini-excursions into Chinatown and a distance learning component that matches each student with a personalized tutor in China for unrehearsed spontaneous dialogue. Our students go into the community and we bring the community into our program.

    Students register for Immersion grades 6/7 or 8/9 or High school Chinese III and are expected to achieve Novice Intermediate to Intermediate ACTFL oral proficiency while gaining an appreciation for major cultural values and practices. Upon successful completion of the 90 hour program, high school students may earn one semester of high school foreign language credit pending their school requirements.

    At the end of the program our students will have the communicative competence and confidence to engage in authentic dialogues with native speakers in real-world situations.

    Summary

    The North Central College Chinese program will partner with a local high school to provide a STARTALK teacher program for 12 pre-service and in-service teachers of Mandarin Chinese with varied teaching experience. This program, focusing on equipping participants with strategies and tools in selecting and applying authentic materials in Chinese language classrooms, is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online formats. The program, with total instructional time of over 90 hours, starts out with a two-day on-site training, is followed by a four-week online training, and wraps up with the second two-day on-site workshop. To ensure the continued support for participants’ application of training content, they will be guided step by step to design their teaching plan and integrate what they will have learned from the training to their future teaching through reflections, group work and hands-on activities . The expected outcomes are that participants will be able to select age-appropriate authentic materials for their lessons, scaffold student learning through effective teaching strategies and tools, and develop performance-based assessment using authentic materials.

    Summary

    ACA 2017 STARTALK Chinese Summer Camp: Earth is Our Home runs from June 13 to June 30, 2017 at University Park Elementary School in Hyattsville, Maryland. This student-centered program will provide an immersive language learning environment where students engage in authentic materials and hands-on activities featuring the theme “Earth is Our Home”. Students will receive technology-enhanced language instruction organized on different topics about the Earth during a virtual visit to the International Earth Day Fair in China. A 2-hour after school extension program will be provided once a week for 10 weeks at University Park Elementary School in fall 2017 following the summer program when students can continue to learn Chinese. At the end of the program, students will be able to greet each other and exchange simple information in Chinese, build lasting interest to continue with Chinese learning, and understand the importance of protecting our environment.

    Summary

    The two primary outcomes for the proposed project are a positive learning experience for approximately 100 Portuguese heritage students in grades 2-11 ranging in language ability from novice to intermediate, along with a professional development experience for 15 Portuguese language and culture educators that will increase their language and cultural knowledge as well as their pedagogical content knowledge to successfully implement standards-based language instruction in their classrooms. The students will participate in approximately 75 hours of instruction in a three-week program that will be incorporated into the Hilmar Unified School District's summer school program.

    Summary

    The Asia Institute Crane House Mandarin Program is a summer language program focused on providing high quality Chinese language and cultural learning to 50 rising middle school and high school students in the Louisville, Kentucky region who have very little or no experience with Mandarin. During the program students are immersed in Chinese language and culture through projects and group activities to achieve a minimum of a novice level of proficiency or better. The program will last two weeks and include 10 days of five hours of instruction for a total of 50 hours of immersive instruction with activities that include traditional arts such as paper folding and calligraphy, traditional dances, tai chi, and music. They will also explore contemporary China through its cities, growing economy, environment and the arts. Students will use their own Kentucky heritage as a lens to compare and contrast both cultures, then demonstrate their knowledge in a final program for educators, family and friends.

    Summary

    Kindergarten through 5th grade learners in the Atlanta area will have the opportunity to increase proficiency in the U.S. priority languages of Chinese, Korean, and Portuguese. This program will provide intensive language instruction for 105 participants: 60in Chinese, 15 in Korean, and 30 in Portuguese. Target proficiency levels will be Novice Mid to Intermediate Low for Portuguese participants and Novice Low to Intermediate Mid for Chinese and Korean participants. This intensive language program will be a two-week camp with 40 hours of interactive immersion in the target language.

    Summary

    Arizona State University provides an intensive, 3-week, non-residential program in elementary Russian for 24 students from 8--12th grade, bringing them to Novice Mid proficiency in speaking, listening, and reading.

    STARTALK students work in small groups in intensive face-to-face sessions on the campus of Arizona State University and, in video sessions with faculty and students from Arizona’s concurrently running Russian language study-abroad program in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

    Students use their online sessions to Bishkek to "preview" a study-abroad program they could join in 2018, to meet host families, talk to instructors and students, and to go on "virtual excursions" to the city.

    By the end of the program, students set up their own plan for a 2018 visit to Bishkek, choosing a host family, setting up an excursion schedule, etc.

    Summary

    The Chinese summer immersion program at UNR plans to host 25 local high school students (grades 9-12) with no or very limited Chinese language background. The course will last three weeks, meeting Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with 90 instructional hours. Students will study Chinese language through three legends and drama performance.

    Upon the successful completion of the STARTALK program, students will be able to reach Novice Mid level according to ACTFL World-Readiness Standards. Students will be able to interpret cultural topics in the target language and perform drama, recognize and write Chinese characters, relate to themselves and compare and synthesize the cultural differences between China and the U.S.

    Summary

    The 2017 Berkeley STARTALK Teacher Program is a 23-day 184-hour Blended Program designed for twelve (12) teachers teaching or planning to teach grades 6-12 in public, private, and heritage schools. (The complete grant period will be April 1, 2017 through February 28, 2018). Each teacher participant will develop and microteach two Standards-Based lesson plans using backward-designed and STARTALK Endorsed Principles. One lesson will be developed and microtaught independently, another lesson will be done collaboratively with another teacher participant. The participants will also have the opportunity to review samples of teaching material, including demo teaching, various authentic materials, as well as STARTALK Classroom Video Collections & Multimedia Teacher Workshop Collections. The participants will also have the opportunity to meet the candidates in the Berkeley STARTALK Teacher Certification Enrichment (Infrastructure) Program in the post program workshop to learn how to become certified teachers.
