With the theme "Oh, The Places You'll Go", students plan a trip to the newly formed state of Uttarakhand, which is located in the northern part of India, by creating an itinerary. They choose to visit different places in Uttarakhand after learning about special attractions / activities / weather / food / wildlife in 4-5 different cities / towns in Uttarakhand. Students research locations, visiting websites, watching videos / pictures of the region, and exploring the possibility of volunteering in a nature preserve or other situation. Students will make connections with other disciplines through hands on activities, such as math, science, geography, arts, health, and nutrition, by communicating in all three modes of communication - interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. They will be immersed in cultural practices (such as folk dances, songs, greetings, showing respect to elders), products (such as food, clothing, books, music, movies) of Uttarakhand, and perspectives of native speakers of Uttarakhand by meeting with the members of Uttarakhand Samaj of Greater Chicago, a local community organization of Uttarakhand natives.

The student program will provide a novice level entry point into the acquisition of Chinese focused on linguistic functions that express desires and preferences for transportation, food and souvenirs. The 20 hours of instructional activities will be focused on achievable novice mid to novice high goals for elementary and middle school students, with the culminating objective being a visit to Chinatown where students will interact with native speakers. This student program will be run concurrently with Global Language Project’s teacher program, and is the natural evolution of our previous partnership with the camp as a site for micro-teaching.
