    ASU Chinese Language Camp: From STARTALK to Flagship offers a 15-day intensive residential program for motivated current 8th-12th grade students in Arizona. This program provides a great opportunity for both heritage and non-heritage learners to explore and expand their knowledge in Chinese language and culture through a highly structured theme- and task-based curriculum. During the program, students will receive instructions in Chinese language and participate in fun, hands-on cultural activities.
    The program boasts a living-learning setting, where participants gain first-hand college life experience on the ASU Tempe campus during the summer. All evening activities are monitored and supervised by resident advisors who reside in the residence hall with students. We hope that through this summer camp, high school students will see the value and fun of learning and exploring the language and culture beyond a structured classroom setting and eventually become life-long learners of Chinese language.

    Summary

    The two primary outcomes for the proposed project are a positive learning experience for approximately 100 Portuguese heritage students in grades 1-8 ranging in language ability from novice to intermediate, along with a professional development experience for 15 Portuguese language and culture educators that will increase their language and cultural knowledge as well as their pedagogical content knowledge to successfully implement standards-based language instruction in their classrooms. The students will participate in approximately 75 hours of instruction in a three-week program that will be incorporated into the Hilmar Unified School District's summer school program.

    The principle expected outcomes for the proposed project are (1) a cadre of approximately 15 Portuguese language educators (intermediate and master experience levels) who are competent in implementing standards-based Portuguese language instruction in their classrooms as a result of their participation in the proposed professional development program, and (2) The 15 teacher participants will engage in about 40 hours of professional development activities spread out over five days. The focus will be on enhancing their knowledge of the three modes of communication and on strategies for integrating culture, content, and language. We will continue to increase the staff development on interpersonal communication (focus on student-to-student interaction) and planning for the integration of content, language and culture. The professional development will also provide strategies for more indepth Checking For Understanding and greater emphasis on language learning and literacy experiences.

    Summary

    This three week program is intended to prepare an estimated 40 pre-kindergarten students to enter a Mandarin Chinese Dual Language Immersion Kindergarten in September 2018. It is anticipated that the students will be both pre-literate and have little to no previous knowledge of the language. Program outcomes will include student ability to communicate in all three modes at the Novice Mid proficiency level. The program will run from 9:00 am till 12:00 noon for three weeks (14 days because of July 4th) for a total of 42 instructional hours.

    Summary

    The 2018 STARTALK Denton ISD intensive Russian and Chinese Summer School, Welcome to My World, will provide four weeks and 120 instructional hours of student-centered learning and instruction in Russian and Chinese respectively to 11th and 12th graders and UNT undergraduate students at the Novice level.

    Upon the successful completion of the summer school, our students will achieve Novice level of language proficiency in Russian or Chinese respectively, will be able to communicate appropriately at the Novice level and will enhance their cultural awareness.

    We believe that the additional benefit of earning up to six college credit hours through a College placement test free of charge and the opportunity to become part of our UNT learning community will encourage the program participants to continue their studies of Russian or Chinese in college.

    Summary

    Sangam-Franklin STARTALK Hindi Language and Culture Program 2018, a three week language immersion program, aims at improving literacy skills and cultural experience of 40 rising six to ninth graders of diverse backgrounds. 2. The overarching theme of 'Storytelling', is divided into three sub themes of 'Personal and Family Stories', 'Cultural Stories about Animals and Birds' and 'Contemporary Stories About Role Model', will prepare students communicate in culturally appropriate manners, describe familiar and some unfamiliar real life situations in simple language, read and write simple texts in Hindi and reflect upon their thoughts and ideas in appropriate contexts. 3. The program goals and learning episodes are outlined in the program curricula for two levels-Novice and Intermediate-based on the ACTFL proficiency guidelines and the World Readiness Standards for Language Learning. 4. We will use visual based authentic material for developing our lesson goals and learning episodes to be implemented in learner-centered classrooms through the process of gradual release of responsibilities from the instructor to students. 5. A combination of online and onsite learning plan will be implemented during the post program period from September 2018 to February 2019.

    Summary

    The West Virginia Department of Education, in partnership with Monongalia County Schools, will offer the STARTALK: WVDE Chinese Immersion Summer Camp program for 90 elementary students through a ten-day instructional summer program with follow-up activities throughout the year (approximately 90 hours of total instruction). Monongalia County students who will enroll in grades 1-5 will have the opportunity to engage in a thematic and content-based summer camp experience in Morgantown, WV. Students will develop or advance their initial Chinese proficiency as they engage with Mandarin speaking instructors and facilitators. The focus of the 2018 camp will be “A Healthy Me”. Lessons and activities will focus on sports, exercise and nutrition.

    Summary

    The Rutgers Chinese Teacher Leadership Academy is a two-week, 80-hour intensive program in which pre- and in-service Chinese teachers will engage in professional development focused on literacy and online instruction. During the academic year, program participants are invited to the Rutgers Chinese Round Table, where Chinese language teachers engage in a monthly, supportive community of practice. As part of the program, Chinese language teacher participants engage in two two practicum settings: an online program for high school students and an elementary FLEX program. At the end of the program, teachers will be able to:

    plan learning experiences that support the STARTALK principles and World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages;

    differentiate instruction
    (planning learning experiences that address the students' unique needs), especially in terms of literacy
    development; use a variety of learning tools to support performance objectives (in face-to-face and online contexts);

    routinely use internal and external assessment data to modify the learning experience; and

    grow as reflective practitioners.

    Summary

    LARC at SDSU will offer a four-week language instruction in Arabic, Chinese, Dari, and Persian languages to 40 non-heritage students (10 for each language program) from July 9th to August 3rd. The program will be open to students in grades 9-12 with no prior knowledge of the language. Camp instructors will be L1 speakers of the target languages, experienced teachers familiar with the US education system, ACTFL OPI, and WPT certified/trained testers/raters, and fellows of the California World Language Project (CWLP). Upon successful completion, the students are awarded ​four units of undergraduate college credit through the SDSU College of Extended Studies.

    ​This three-week hybrid teacher training program will prepare sixteen new and returning secondary and post-secondary teachers of Arabic, Chinese, Dari, and Persian with the knowledge and practicum opportunities to design and deliver curricula and lessons based on backward design and STARTALK-endorsed principles for effective teaching and learning. An additional core focus will be on thematically organized performance-based units of instruction in a learner-centered classroom. Successful teachers will earn three units of graduate level college credit. Interested participants will attend an additional 40 hours of continuing teacher education offered by CWLP-SAILN on-site or online, and will become fellows of CWLP upon the final training. The participants will also learn about the steps that are involved in becoming a credentialed teacher in the state of California.
