    The Arabic Summer Academy Boston is an intensive program that welcomes high school students from around Boston to learn Arabic and explore the cultures of the Arabic-speaking world in an engaging and supportive environment. The program creates a dynamic academic environment where students from a variety of backgrounds can express their full selves, build communicative skills, and develop an ethic of lifelong learning as global citizens. The Arabic Summer Academy is a 17-day (102-hour) non-residential program, and it produces 40 graduates (grades 9-12) who have reached proficiency between the Novice Mid and Novice High levels in Arabic.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Russian Language and Culture Immersion Program is designed for undergraduate students who see themselves pursuing professional careers where their knowledge of the Russian language and culture will be a major asset. The rigorous residential five-week curriculum is organized around the general theme “Let’s Talk About Life” and covers various life aspects including but not limited to education, professional career, social life, hobbies and interests. The level-appropriate linguistic, cultural, and professional competencies that the students develop enable them to employ their knowledge of Russia and Russian in a host of future careers all over the world across professional areas. The program is designed to promote accelerated language learning with integrated knowledge of culture, protocols, and national identity in modern Russia. It will admit 20 undergraduate students from universities and community colleges across the nation, dividing cohorts into two proficiency tracks: Novice and Intermediate. Standards-based and thematically organized curriculum is programmed over five weeks of residential study with 270 hours of structured learning: 125 hours of in-class instruction; 105 hours of self-directed learning activities; and 40 hours of weekend cultural enrichment activities. Participants typically advance one to two ACTFL tiers in language proficiency.

    Summary

    The West Virginia Department of Education, in partnership with Monongalia County Schools, will offer the STARTALK: WVDE Chinese Immersion Summer Camp program for 90 elementary students through a ten-day instructional summer program with follow-up activities throughout the year (approximately 90 hours of total instruction). Monongalia County students who will enroll in grades 1-5 will have the opportunity to engage in a thematic and content-based summer camp experience in Morgantown, WV. Students will develop or advance their initial Chinese proficiency as they engage with Mandarin speaking instructors and facilitators. The focus of the 2019 camp will be "Learning Chinese: It's out of this world!" Lessons and activities will focus on the solar system.

    North Central College proposes a student and teacher combination program for 2019. The student program will be a hybrid, 13-day, non-residential program with two levels of classes: the Level One (novice-mid) program being titled "Journey to China,” and the Level Two (novice-high) program, titled “Working Together with China.” Up to 20 high school students will be enrolled in the program, which will consist of eight hours of daily online or on-site instruction and activities, with some additional excursions and opportunities to practice learned skills for a total of 96 hours of instructional time. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will have earned a certificate and be able to demonstrate competence in the three modes of communication, as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL): interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational communication in Chinese.

    Summary

    The North Central College Chinese program will provide a STARTALK teacher program for 12 teachers of Mandarin Chinese from weekend Chinese schools. This program, focusing on equipping participants with strategies and tools in selecting and applying authentic materials in Chinese language classrooms, is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online formats. The program, with a total instructional time of over 90 hours, combines a 10-day face-to-face workshop and 5-day online modules, to guide participants to use authentic materials and apply effective teaching strategies in unit and lesson planning. To ensure the continued support for participants’ application of training content, two post- program reunion and sharing activities are designed during the fall and winter. The expected outcomes are that participants are able to select age-appropriate authentic materials for their lessons, scaffold student learning through effective teaching strategies and tools, and develop performance-based assessments using authentic materials.

    Our program will emphasize standards-based, learner-centered planning and classroom management for teaching Korean language and culture based on two TELL learning goals. Participants will demonstrate how to plan and create learning plans that address the unique needs and interests of their students and using differentiated instruction in K-Pop to plan lessons that lead students to meet performance objectives.

    Summary

    Our program targets rising juniors and seniors in U.S. high schools who are new learners of Mandarin Chinese and Russian. The major goals of the Academy are to provide a safe, culture-rich environment for the early development of communicative proficiency; to set our students on the path to advanced-level proficiency; and to assess the impact of the program’s innovative language teaching approach. The Academy will follow a theme-based curriculum with a task-based pedagogy designed to close the gap between classroom performance and real-world proficiency by providing learners with opportunities to perform real-world problem solving tasks, to explore their individual interests in Chinese and Russian language and culture, to connect with native speakers of the language both in the local community and online, and to discuss career opportunities with individuals who use the language in their professional life. The total number of instructional hours is 244, and the Academy will begin on June 17, 2019 and end on July 12, 2019. The summer program is followed by a mandatory academic-year blended-learning component, upon successful completion of which participants receive high school and college credit.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Korean Language Program at Mercy College, “STARTALK: Explore City of Seoul,” will advance students’ Korean language competency to novice-mid or novice-high level, depending on their level at program entrance. We will recruit and select 30 students in grades 6-8 with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, including students returning from the previous year’s program. Through both virtual and face-to-face teaching and learning experiences, the students will explore city of Seoul, Korean family life, school life, and cultural activities aligned to the World Readiness Standards. The students will have opportunities to create a digital presentation on their learning outcomes from the STARTALK program. The program will be offered Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 29 to August 16, 2019, for a total of 90 hours of instructional time.

    The Hudson STARTALK Portuguese Language & Cultures Summer Camp, administered by Hudson Public Schools, will give students in grades 3, 4 and 5 an opportunity to learn Portuguese and to discover the cultures of the Portuguese speaking world. The program will run from June 25 to July 17 providing students with 90 hours of instruction. Three classes will be offered: one class for heritage speakers; one for non-heritage speakers with little to no previous knowledge of the language; and a third class for returning non-heritage speakers and 5th-grade students currently taking Portuguese.
    Students will acquire language by engaging in real-life situations, singing, dancing, doing crafts, playing sports and going on field trips.

    Summary

    "Explore East Africa: Learn Swahili" is a four-week (July 8-August 2, 2019) intensive language program targeting 17 participants to receive a total of 108 hours of Swahili instruction every weekday. Students will attend five hours of instruction per day, Mondays through Thursdays, and seven hours on Fridays for 20 days. The participants, who will enroll in the elementary and intermediate classes, will be drawn from Ohio University undergraduate students, students from other four-year institutions in Ohio, as well as high school students from schools within the vicinity of Ohio University. OHIO’s program will include two sections with different targeted levels of proficiency, offering four credit hours of college credit for Elementary Swahili I (Novice-Mid) and Intermediate Swahili I (Novice High/ Intermediate Mid) each. The program will integrate culture, content, and language in classroom instruction and through instructional field trips, and will lead students on a virtual journey to East Africa.

    The theme is "Explore East Africa: Learn Swahili. We aim for students to learn Swahili in an immersion context to prepare them for study abroad in East Africa or to work where the use of Swahili will be essential. The program will integrate culture, content, and language and will lead students on a journey to East Africa. The program integrates the STARTALK approach by providing learners with ample opportunities to use the target language in simulated and real life contexts with the ultimate goal of equipping learners with interpersonal and presentational skills necessary for communication. During the first week of the program, students will learn Swahili greetings, self- introductions, talking about their families and a comparative analysis of the East African and American daily routines. The second week will focus on food and meals. Students will learn the Swahili names of the popular food items in East Africa, how to buy ingredients required for preparing different types of food, how to cook various types of popular Swahili cuisines, and how to place an order at
    a restaurant. In addition, students will learn numbers counting, negotiating and converting currencies, as well as how to welcome visitors to their host family’s home. The third week will focus on the East African seasons/weather, clothes, kangas and the Maasai Shukas. A simulation of a typical East African marketplace will be staged to enable the students to participate in bargaining and buying various clothing items
    at the market. The fourth week will focus on the places of interest to visit while in East Africa and different modes of transport. Students will go hiking around the Athens campus area for simulations and will visit East African immigrant communities and the Angaza Cultural Festival. The final days of the program will be for linking all the aspects learned in class through various situations of life in East Africa. We will have ongoing evaluations and assessments.
