    Summary

    STARTALK Korean at USC will offer a 4-week Novice-level Korean language classes to high school students (9th-12th grades, total 24 students). We recruit non-heritage students with no prior knowledge as well as those with basic communication skills in Korean. Participants will earn 5 high school credits upon the successful completion. By the end of the program, we expect students to reach Novice Mid or Novice High (for returning students from a previous STARTALK program) on the ACTFL OPI scale. The daily program includes four hours of instruction from Monday through Friday (6/19~7/14/2017), totaling 80 hours of instruction including Orientation and Field Trip.

    Summary

    Environmental Challenges and Public Health in India and Pakistan serves as the theme for Kean’s 2017 Building Competency in Hindi and Urdu through Global Project-Based Learning Program designed for secondary/early post-secondary heritage language learners. Specifically, the theme focuses on the integration of language, culture and content related to perspectives and practices concerning health and wellness and their relationship to environmental conditions in India and Pakistan. Program outcomes include development of higher levels of linguistic, intercultural and global competencies through daily interactions with students from partner schools in India and Pakistan focused on gaining knowledge about and taking action on these local/global issues. The program will enroll 20 Hindi and 15 Urdu students in a three-week standards-driven blended learning experience and offers opportunities to earn high school and/or college credits.

    Summary

    HCC will provide summer courses in Arabic and Chinese to 60 high school students in Howard County. HCC will recruit students from grades 9 – 12 from public, private, and homeschools in the county and will provide them with 86 hours of instruction over five weeks from July 3 through August 3. Outcomes include: exiting participants at the novice mid or novice high level, increasing understanding of Arabic and Chinese speaking cultures, recruiting learners to continue with second semester language offerings in the fall semester, exposing learners to potential career opportunities requiring the knowledge and skills in a critical language, and sponsoring ongoing dialogue on Arabic and Chinese language and cultural issues in the high schools during the academic year.

    Summary

    STARTALK/Kanti Hindi Kendra will offer three week of 'Hindi Language and Culture Immersion' summer program to 74 elementary and middle school students from June 26 to July 14, 2017. The program will provide 92 hours of standards driven and learner-centered Hindi language learning experience to novice and intermediate range heritage learners. Participants will have the opportunity to develop language skills, native art (drama, visual arts and music) and cultural competence by exploring program's theme 'Me and My World- Celebrating the Diversity'. Theme based games, competitions, multi-media projects and hands-on native visual and performing arts projects such as 'Traditional Art Forms'; 'Fair and Festivity' will further provide learning experiences to all language learners with varied needs to engage in meaningful communication, create and present collaborative products for peer assessment and self reflection. The outcome for our learners will be their ability to demonstrate gains in Hindi language proficiency in three modes of communication at higher sub-level. During our post program phase (September 2017 to February 2018) the participants will have the opportunity to continue to stay engaged in Hindi language and culture learning and further advance their Hindi language proficiency and cultural perspective.

    Summary

    The University of Iowa (UI) proposes to offer a four-week summer intensive Chinese program for Iowa high school students with zero or little background in the Chinese language to receive three college credit. We expect to enroll 26 senior high school students from the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) and Cedar Rapids Community School District (CRSD), as well as other areas of Iowa State. This is a day-class program with a residential component for students from farther away, and it includes 114 class contact hours plus extra-curricular activities. By the end of the program, students are expected to reach ACTFL Novice Mid to High level proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The major curricular goals for the proposed program are to have students learn the language, develop language competencies, and experience Chinese education, culture, customs, and history through a theme-based virtual environment, communicative-based teaching methods, hand-on activities, culture workshops, contextualized performance, and field trips.

    Summary

    Discover Russian is a four-week introduction to Russian language and culture course that will be offered by American Councils for International Education and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), to 24 rising 6th-12th graders at TJHSST’s campus in Fairfax County, Virginia. The program fosters interest in Russian language and culture among students with and without access to Russian programs in their schools and/or communities by offering two levels of classes: Level One for those new to Russian and Level Two for those with prior Russian language experience. Although placement will be determined by language proficiency and not age, differentiation will occur to accommodate students’ varying rates of learning and levels of maturity. Classes will meet for six hours each day for 19 days, for a total of 114 hours of immersion instruction. Participants in Level One will reach Novice-Mid level proficiency by program’s end, while those in Level Two will attain Novice-High and sometimes Intermediate Low.

    The STARTALK Discover Russian Teacher Program is a two-week (July 17-28, 2017) teacher training program located on the campus of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County, Virginia. The theme of the Teacher Program will be, “A Roadmap for Teaching and Learning Russian with the World-Readiness Standards”, and it will provide 17 teachers of Russian with instruction six hours a day for 12 days. During this period, teachers will learn to deliver a standards-based instructional program at the K-12 level in Russian. Participants will create their own itineraries for their classrooms, while keeping within the limits of their state and district guidelines. They will also explore new avenues with their students that allows them to reach their final destination—Russia and Russian!

    Summary

    The LMU 2017 Mandarin Student Summer Immersion Program is based on ACTFL Standards-Standards for Foreign Language Learning and Preparing for the 21st Century, as well as aligned with the Common Core, Visual/ Performing Arts, and Physical Education Standards for California Public Schools. Expected program outcomes are that students will be able to: 1) perform Chinese folk art dancing, sing, recite Chinese poetry, complete and describe hands-on culture, art and craft projects; 2) Guide family/community members through a market-place simulation during a culminating experience representative of this year’s theme, Discovery through the Virtual Journey along the Silk Road; 3) Integrate Chinese language and cultural learning through the Virtual Journey by learning proverbs about travel/journey, their meanings and morals, and engage in interdisciplinary instruction with language arts, math and social studies. This program targets 184 students from Castelar Elementary School in Chinatown, as well as neighboring sites currently providing Mandarin Dual Language Programs in the greater Los Angeles area. We will hold 8 simultaneous class sessions and students will participate for 4 instructional hours per day, 5 days a week, for two weeks totaling 40 student contact hours.

    Summary

    The LMU 2017 Mandarin Teacher Summer Institute will continue to respond to the demand for highly qualified teachers of Chinese by providing support and resources through the provision of two pathways for teacher preparation: 1) The continuing graduate-level Mandarin language credential, and 2) the Certificate in Teaching Mandarin in PreK-12 Settings. Pathway 1: Credential program outcomes include: 1) recruiting and admitting highly qualified K-12 Chinese language teacher candidates for entrance into the secondary or multiple subjects requirements and master's degree program; 2) Supporting Summer Institute participants in passing state testing requirements; 3) Providing 2 cohorts of teacher candidates (21 total) with 6 units of graduate-level coursework applicable to their credentials and masters. The credential program offers 110 hours of coursework, independent work and clinical practice for graduate credit. Pathway 2 is the Certificate in Teaching Chinese in Pre-K – 12 Settings with a targeted enrollment of 13 participants (5 new and 8 returning) who teach in heritage or other programs. Pathway 2 participants complete a hybrid course-series offered through LMU Extension for up to 12 continuing education units of credit (120 professional development credit hours). Upon completion of this second Summer Institute Pathway, participants will: 1) Expand knowledge of content-based Mandarin language and literacy, with a focus on the arts and movement education (Content-based Language Instruction and Curriculum Development in Mandarin); 2) Incorporate research-based practices in assessment linked to instruction (Assessment Basics and Oral Proficiency); 3) Apply new skills in content instruction in Mandarin and engage in reflection about their practices (Practicum in Teaching Mandarin); and 4) Deepen knowledge and skill in teaching Chinese grammar (Chinese Grammar Pedagogy course).

    STARTALK Teaching Chinese with Authentic Materials

    Summary

    The North Central College Chinese program will partner with a local high school to provide a STARTALK teacher program for 12 pre-service and in-service teachers of Mandarin Chinese with varied teaching experience. This program, focusing on equipping participants with strategies and tools in selecting and applying authentic materials in Chinese language classrooms, is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online formats. The program, with total instructional time of over 90 hours, starts out with a two-day on-site training, is followed by a four-week online training, and wraps up with the second two-day on-site workshop. To ensure the continued support for participants’ application of training content, they will be guided step by step to design their teaching plan and integrate what they will have learned from the training to their future teaching through reflections, group work and hands-on activities . The expected outcomes are that participants will be able to select age-appropriate authentic materials for their lessons, scaffold student learning through effective teaching strategies and tools, and develop performance-based assessment using authentic materials.
