    Summary

    The Russian STARTALK Program at UNT is a non- residential, intensive Russian language course at the Novice level and is fully funded by a federal grant. All program activities, including tuition, textbooks and other learning materials are free of charge to students. Upon the successful competition of the summer school, our students will achieve novice level of language proficiency, will be able to communicate in Russian appropriate at the novice level and will enhance their cultural awareness. Additionally, all successful students will be awarded six college credit hours. The number of program participants is limited to 20 students that will be selected from a pool of applicants. The selection criteria are based on academic performance and interest in pursuing Russian after the completion of the program.

    Applications may be submitted from February 15, 2017 to April 28, 2017. All successful applicants will be informed no later than May 8, 2017. More information and application instructions can be found on http://worldlanguages.unt.edu (Undergraduate; Russian).

    Summary

    This program offers a fifteen-day residential Chinese language summer camp for 30 current 8th to 12th graders from Arizona to explore and expand their knowledge in Chinese language and culture. The 30 students are placed into different classes based on their proficiency levels. During the camp, students live on the ASU Tempe campus where they spend their day participating in intensive language classes as as well as fun, hands-on cultural activities. Evenings and weekends are also packed with activities that are geared toward both learning and entertainment. By the end of the program, these learners are not only able to use Chinese to perform basic tasks in everyday life but also to acquire valuable knowledge on Chinese culture as well. The program boasts a living-learning setting, where participants can also gain first-hand college life experience on the ASU Tempe campus. All evening activities are monitored and supervised by mature resident advisors who reside in the residence hall with students.

    Summary

    This blended 96 hour camp (total 18 days program with 12 days face to face and six days of pre-camp online segment) with two weekend breaks will target 75 middle and high school students and will be based on five C’s to help students in developing proficiency in three modes of communication. Lesson plans will be developed keeping main focus on culture besides the target language and will be posted on www.balvihar.org for Startalk reference and community. The program will be centered on learners and full attention will be paid to individual needs. Best practices in instruction and assessment will be implemented. We will use differentiating tasks to address different levels (novice, intermediate and advance) of proficiency in aural and literacy skills.

    Summary

    The 2017 UPenn Hindi-Urdu Startalk Program will offer five weeks of completely online instruction from May 22 - June 28. Classes will meet weekdays 4-6 pm on an online meeting platform. Students with little or no prior background will learn to use the language to communicate in a variety of real-world situations. Students will also learn to read and write one script of their choice (Hindi or Urdu script).
