    Summary

    LARC at SDSU will offer four-week language instruction in Arabic, Persian, Portuguese, and Russian languages to 48 non-heritage students (12 for each language program) from July 8th to August 2nd​. The program will be open to students in grades 9-12 with no prior knowledge of the language. Students will receive 120 hours of instruction during the summer camp. This immersion program will use a thematic curriculum “Contemporary Life: Young Adults in a Big City,” to develop students’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while simultaneously developing their cultural competence in the language and culture. The targeted goals are novice-high in listening and speaking, and novice-mid in reading and writing. Upon successful completion, the students will be awarded four units of undergraduate college credit through the SDSU College of Extended Studies. The program has 15 hours of follow-up sessions over 5 months (3 hours per month).

    Summary

    The Brockton Public Schools Startalk Unidos na Ciências program will provide engaging and rigorous STEM language learning in Portuguese full-immersion setting for students entering kindergarten through grade three. This is a bifurcated program, with elementary students in grades one through engaging in a two-week science exploration camp in July, and entering kindergartens participating in a two-week program in August. All students in this program participate in the Unidos Portuguese Dual Language Immersion program during the school year, with entering kindergartners being exposed to organized Portuguese language instruction for the first time. Students in the Unidos program in grade kindergarten through grade three have a novice Portuguese proficiency ranging from Novice-Low to Novice-High. In Unidos em Ciências, students will engage in grade level science standards, contextualized within the Lusophone world. Unidos em Ciências unifying theme is “Where in the Portuguese Speaking World”, with each grade contextualizing it for their curriculum standards. Kindergarten will focus on living things, basic needs, and the environment. Grade one will focus on space and motion. Grade two will focus on plants and animal characteristics. Grade three will focus on matter, land forms, and maps. Program goals will include interpretive communication, interpersonal communication, and presentational communication, with targeted outcomes for each grade. The program in July for first through third graders will run for ten days for five hours each day for a total of 50 instructional hours. The program for incoming kindergartners in August will run for three hours per day for two weeks for a total of 30 instructional hours.

    Summary

    From Local to Global is a three-week summer language program designed to introduce 45 high school students to Arabic, Portuguese, and Russian language. They will be divided into three language groups. The program will have two sections for Arabic, two sections for Portuguese and one section for Russian. The proficiency level for Arabic and Russian is novice-low/mid. For Portuguese, the proficiency level is novice-high/ intermediate low . We noticed that students in this region learn Portuguese easily and quickly since the majority of students speak Spanish in this region and there are a lot of similarities between Spanish and Portuguese. The program offers six hours daily for fifteen days providing a total of ninety instructional hours. Summer language acquisition will be maintained and expanded during the subsequent school year, through the online portion of the program.

    Summary

    The program “Arabic in New Mexico: A Common Past and Shared Future” will provide Arabic instruction for 36 students grades 6-12 at the Novice and Intermediate levels over the course of three weeks (97.5 contact hours). Novice students will reach the Novice High level with some performance at the Intermediate Low level, and Intermediate students will reach the Intermediate Low level with some performance at the Intermediate Mid level in all language skills. The program will be guided by the World-Readiness Standards for Language Learning and use performance-based assessment. Through classroom instruction, community interactions, and extracurricular activities, students will develop a greater understanding of past and present cultural connections between New Mexico and the Arab world.

    The Chinese Language and Culture Academy is a 15-day, non-residential program running from July 1 to July 20, 2019, at the State University of New York, College at Oswego. The program will recruit a total of 50 students ranging from the 2nd to the 12th grade. The three-week program will provide a total of 90 instructional hours at six hours per day with a program theme “Let’s Go to China.” Depending on their entry level, students are expected to advance their Chinese language proficiency to novice-mid and novice-high levels by the end of program. There will be five follow-up cultural workshops to promote cultural awareness during the 2019-20 school year.

    Summary

    Korean American Center in partnership with UCI’s Center for Critical Korean Studies (CCKS) will host a STARTALK Korean Summer Immersion Program. This will be a four-week, daily program during the summer for novice level middle school heritage learners in 6th through 8th grades. Under the program theme of “Our History, Our Heritage & Our Heroes,” students will use classroom immersion and dynamic task-based learning to advance Korean language competency. Student will be introduced to historical and legendary figures through traditional stories and will improve their understanding of Korean culture and explore the connection between culture, arts and language by participating in fun, hands-on cultural activities such as arts, crafts, calligraphy, and music. Students will be able to present newly acquired terms, concepts and phrases by conveying information to someone else. Language instruction will be delivered through group lessons, individual instruction, and peer mentoring. By the end of the program, students will receive 110 hours of instruction and letter of program completion from UCI. Through Korean American Center, students will have the opportunity for continuous learning. The program will run Monday Through Friday from July 8, 2018 through August 2nd (4-weeks total) from 9:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M.

    Summary

    This blended 96 hour camp (total 15 days program with 12 days face to face and three days of pre-camp 2 hour online segment) with two weekend breaks will target 75 middle and high school students and will be based on five C’s to help students in developing proficiency in three modes of communication. Lesson plans will be developed keeping main focus on culture besides the target language and will be posted on www.balvihar.org for Startalk reference and community. The program will be centered on learners and full attention will be paid to individual needs. Best practices in instruction and assessment will be implemented. We will use differentiating tasks to address different levels (novice, intermediate and advance) of proficiency in aural and literacy skills.

    The STARTALK 2019 program Preparing Arabic Teachers of Tomorrow goal is to prepare 20 Arabic teachers to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to complete the certification process with Michigan Teachers of Tomorrow Program. Participants who are already certified will receive up on approval 80 SCECHs State Continues Education Clock Hours toward the renewal of their certificates. The program will provide solid professional development workshops connecting theory to practice and implementing best practices using the STARTALK Endorsed-Principles in teaching Arabic as a world language in K-12 U.S. schools. The program also aims to advance teachers professional skills and knowledge to maintain their professional certification. The two-week program will offer 85 instructional hours including a pre-program segment viewing selected STARTALK online workshops followed by discussions, workshops, and micro teaching sessions. The micro teaching sessions will allow teachers to apply and practice learned teaching strategies in real classroom setting and with 30 school students.

    The UW-Madison STARTALK Korean Language & Culture Academy will provide high school students, grades 9-12, the opportunity to reach Novice Mid to Novice High proficiency in Korean in a four week program. By following the program theme of My Virtual Trip to South Korea, students in the program will communicate in Korean in real-life situations centered around travel, cuisine, popular culture, and the weather.     Summary

    The STARTALK Student Program, ‘Bridges to Russia: Culture and Social Sciences’ aims to enroll 20 high school Russian heritage students (14-18) in a four-week intensive language program meeting five hours a day for a total of 100 instructional hours. Students will increase their proficiency in Russian by examining how history and other social sciences help them to understand the world around them. The students will work closely with an elderly Russian-speaking community member and conduct an interview, which they will present in class. All interviews will be collected and turned into ‘Bridging the Generations’ project.
