    Summary

    The HCPSS STARTALK Chinese Language Summer Camp is a three week ( 91 instructional hours) Chinese Immersion program for forty-five students in grades 3-5 and forty-five students in grades 6-8, who have little to no knowledge of Chinese language and culture. The program will focus on learning the Chinese language and culture through virtual travel in China. Under the theme: 2017: A Chinese Odyssey, students will read a story about a young person's travel to china, explore two or three Chinese cities, and learn about the geography of China, the modes of transportation, the weather, interesting sites and monuments, family members, and important holidays and cultural events such as the Peking Opera. By the end of the program at least 90% of the students will reach at least a "novice-mid" proficiency level in all modes of communication based on the ACTFL 2012 proficiency guidelines.

    Summary

    STARTALK 2017 -PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS IN RUSSIAN, a second-year Russian four-week summer program to be held June 26 – July 21, 2016 at the United States Naval Academy (USNA), will focus on developing and expanding communicative competence and cultural awareness in midshipmen at the Naval Academy and students from nearby Anne Arundel Community College (AACC). The program will meet for 6.5 hours per day for 20 days (a total of 130 instructional hours) and will offer four weeks of intensive Russian instruction at the Novice-Mid level. Participants will be 20 students who will have completed two semesters of Russian either at USNA or AACC. They will work on developing their Russian for future professional and personal development. The outcomes of the program are: successful completion of the course and continued pursuit of formal and informal study of Russian.

    Summary

    The BYU Arabic STARTALK Camp is designed to light the fire of motivation in students as they experience that they can learn a lot of Arabic in just three weeks. Our theme, “Avicenna’s Astrolabe,” centers on a collaborative mystery-solving game set in the present. Students are tasked to find an ancient cure to a deadly disease that threatens to decimate the modern world. The key to doing so is an astrolabe once held by the famous polymath, Ibn Sina (a.k.a. Avicenna). By exploring cities and talking to people from both the modern and medieval Arab world, students uncover the story of the astrolabe as it passed hands from civilization to civilization, while also finding clues leading them on to discover the cure they seek. In the process, students internalize basic communication skills while also experiencing a variety of Arab cultures and historical perspectives that highlight the impact of Arabo-Islamic civilization on the West. They will also learn about past and present violent reactionary movements in the East and the West that manipulate religion to foment hate and gain power.

    Beginners get off to a great start and complete the equivalent of a year of high school Arabic and receive corresponding credit. We will again offer an option that will allow those who already know the script to complete the equivalent of Arabic 101 and receive either high school or university credit. Even more advanced students may complete Arabic 102 and receive high school or university credit. All will come away with a solid repertoire of pragmatic speaking and reading skills and gain significant hands-on experience with Arab culture.

    Students learn through doing. They live the language, learning to perform authentic tasks. They are immersed in music, films, games, cooking lessons, visits to mosques and restaurants. Tutors are available day and night to act as role models and to help students of varying abilities and challenges succeed. World-class teachers are experienced in making learning fun and adjusting instruction to individual needs. Students practice and demonstrate their progress in role plays and in day-to-day living, which helps to build confidence.

    All students are urged to push on during the academic year with our award-winning distance-learning course that includes live support from tutors. Some former students who have done so have already distinguished themselves in follow-on abroad experience and realized the goal of acquiring advanced levels of proficiency in Arabic. BYU’s Arabic camp is a great springboard. Consider the example of Rachel Lott, who participated in our 2014 camp and will be joining us this year as a teaching assistant:

    The Swahili STARTALK is a one-month (June 26-July 26) intensive language program targeting 20 participants to receive a total of 92 hours of Swahili instruction by attending four hours per day, Mondays to Thursdays, and five hours on Fridays for 22 days. The participants, who will enroll in the elementary and intermediate classes, will be drawn from Ohio University undergraduate students, students from other four-year institutions in Ohio, as well as high school students from schools within the vicinity of Ohio University. At the end of the program, students will earn four semester hours of college credit, and students in the Elementary class will be able to perform at the Novice Mid proficiency level, while students in the Intermediate class will be able to perform at the Novice High/Intermediate Low levels according to the NCSSFL-ACTFL Global Can-Do Benchmarks. The program will integrate culture, content, and language and will lead students on a journey to East Africa.

    Summary

    The programs will serve 125 English Language Learners in grades 6-8 in a 5 week program beginning June 26 and ending July 28, 2017. Students will receive 96 hours of instruction and will earn .5 credits in Chinese Language and Culture through a series of enriching activities that only the nation’s capital can offer. Students will learn to speak Chinese as they sip tea at the Embassy of China, take a walking tour of Chinatown, witness martial arts exhibits at the Chinese Cultural Center and appreciate art at the National Museums of Asian Art. They will release their paper lanterns at the culmination of the program where they will celebrate the Chinese New Year!

    Summary

    Huayuan Chinese Academy’s “STARTALK STEM-Integrated Chinese Learning Program” will immerse 45 rising 2nd through 5th graders in a Chinese language and culture environment for a total of 91 instructional hours over 3 weeks, June 26-July 14, 2017, followed by a 10-week fall Extension Program. The curriculum is constructed around the storyline of the fictional character Water Baby’s fun life, magic show, and adventures, with the STEM-based theme “Explore Water, an Essential Element of Life.” The curriculum integrates hands-on linguistic, cultural, and scientific activities, all designed based on the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. At the program's end, students will be able to greet each other, exchange simple information about themselves and their family members, as well as topics related to three states of water, water cycle, and water pollution, and follow simple steps in Chinese for scientific experiments.

    Summary

    The proposed Chicago Public Schools (CPS) STARTALK program will provide a rich, hands-on, language immersion program in Arabic and Chinese to 30 high school students (9th-11th grade) who have already completed one to two years of Arabic instruction or two to three years of Chinese instruction. The program will be housed at the University of Chicago (UChicago) campus and classes will be conducted by U of C instructors. The program is intended to give students an opportunity to practice and improve their language skills through real-life applications and varied authentic experiences in alignment with STARTALK principles. Participants will attend classes Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, starting June 26 and ending July 21, 2017 with a total of 95 hours of instruction.

    Summary

    The YHIS-STARTALK Chinese Immersion Student program is a 3-week, non-residential Intensive summer program for 30 rising 3rd to 8th grade students, with diverse socioeconomic, ethnic, and linguistic background and Mandarin Chinese proficiency levels ranging from Novice Low to Intermediate mid. Through our partnership with local farms and markets, students will be learning language, content and culture in authentic contexts, arranged in science-oriented, culturally-enriching themes.

    The YHIS Startalk program will start with three (June 26 to July 14) 35-hour weeks of intensive, full immersion learning, and will extend into the school year with multiple opportunities for learners to continue and retain their learning, taking full advantage of technology as well as the vibrant learning community that is YingHua International School. With the indispensable support of the Startalk funding, attention will be centered around students in late elementary grades through middle school, an otherwise overlooked range of age of language learners, who are between community-based weekend language schools and well-funded high school language programs. Strong pedagogical leadership will ensure the quality of the program design, and the expertise and experience of teachers, together with a low student-teacher ratio, will ensure the quality of instruction.

    Student participants will be group according to their Chinese language proficiency. Student outcomes include: increased Chinese language skills, increased knowledge of and appreciation for Chinese culture, while incorporating science into Chinese learning.

    Summary

    The UW-Madison STARTALK Korean Language & Culture Academy will offer high school participants in-depth exploration of Korean language, and popular and traditional culture in Korea, in a 5-week, half-day, non-residential program. The program will be led by an experienced team of faculty and instructors from the UW-Madison Korean Language Program in the Department of Asian Languages & Cultures, with the assistance and participation of UW-Madison undergraduate students of Korean who will serve as program assistants, guests from the community who will lead interactive workshops on cultural topics, and K-buddy peers in Korea. The UW-Madison Language Institute will offer expertise in program design as well as administrative support.

    Target participants will be 20 high school students with no or minimal proficiency in Korean.

    Working within the program theme of “From Wisconsin to Korea,” and with Novice Mid proficiency goals in mind, participants will explore themes of Let’s Get Acquainted, Daily Schedules, In Restaurants and Around Town, and Traditions Here and There. Based on a backward-design approach to lesson planning and curriculum development using the STARTALK curriculum template, daily learning plans will work towards goals based on real-life usage of Korean that incorporate exploration of cultural practices, products and perspectives as well as language proficiency.

    Korean language and culture lessons taught by experienced teachers of Korean will be supplemented by interactive workshops in rich dimensions of Korean culture, such as martial arts, dance, cuisine, and popular culture, led by members of the campus and local communities. The exploration of these cultural products and practices, and the perspectives that underlie them, will be integrated with language learning. To further enable language use both within and outside of the classroom and with diverse communities, students will also meet via videoconference with K-buddy peers in Korea, to share information about themselves and to gain perspective on teen life in Korea. Undergraduate students of Korean will serve as mentors and program assistants, providing models of developing language learners for STARTALK program participants.

    The students’ developing knowledge and abilities will be assessed using performance-based measures based on real-life scenarios. In these assessments, participants will demonstrate their functional abilities in using Korean and employ their understanding of targeted Korean cultural practices, products and perspectives. Unit-level performance assessments will, for example, ask participants to view a video on a Korean holiday, describe the holiday to a classmate, and then create a greeting card for a holiday. Students will set goals, and document and reflect on their progress, through an online portfolio (LinguaFolio). A final video project will provide the opportunity for students to synthesize what they learned in the program.

    The Virginia Beach Summer STARTALK Academies seek to provide easily accessible, free opportunities for critical language and culture learning to young students throughout the school division, reflecting the diverse learners in our community. 45 rising fifth grade students will be selected by lottery for the Chinese language strand and 30 for the Russian strand; participants from last summer’s program will be invited to attend advanced classes. The program will be held from June 26 to July 20, 2017, Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM -12:00 PM (minus July 4th) totaling 62 instructional hours with the field trip. In addition, after-school Post-Sessions are planned to extend student cultural knowledge and language proficiency.
