    Summary

    The 2018 VSCSA program at the University of Virginia aims to provide a linguistically and culturally enriched online learning environment for 24 high school students who are rising 9th-12th graders in the US. Students will embark on a 12-day virtual journey in Beijing from July 5 to July 19 in 2018 that concurs with the major timeframe of the VSCTA teacher program. Upon the completion of the program, the learners will develop a positive “Can-Do” attitude and attain proficiency at the intermediate-low level according to ACTFL’s proficiency guidelines. Curricular requirements and lesson plans will be effectively implemented in alignment with the can-do statements across the three communicative modes specified in the online LinguiaFolio. The total instructional hours are 40 hours, including time committed to online orientation and synchronous and asynchronous online learning. Teacher and student ratio is 1:1. The program features quality online learning that is made possible by research-endorsed best practices in language pedagogy and cutting-edge technology platform and tools. Learners have ample opportunities to engage in active learning that is intended to be fun, engaging, and motivating. Students who attend all online synchronous sessions and complete all programmatic and curricular requirements will receive a gift card at the amount of up to 50.00 and a Certificate of Excellence in Learning.     STARTALK: MOSAAIC – Multilingual Opportunities for Students in Arabic Arts, Innovation, and Culture, establishes a four-week, 120-hour summer intensive language learning program for K-8 students in Patterson, CA to acquire mid to high novice levels of Arabic language and cultural competence through the arts and cultures of Arabic-speaking communities. The program offers students daily opportunities every day to use their emerging Arabic language capacities to create culturally responsive art and to communicate in culturally and linguistically authentic and meaningful ways. Largely project-based, MOSAAIC guides students in developing technical language and acquiring skill in using the tools of their chosen arts disciplines. MOSAAIC classroom staff are well-known professionals in their arts area of focus, thereby ensuring a level of rigor and credibility for the program. The program will also support 75 hours of staff professional collaboration, learning and reflection to create the target classroom learning plans, plan student and family activities, and enhance their language teaching and arts integration skills.

    Ohio Hindi Summer Camp 2018 will offer an exciting opportunity to 50 children, heritage and non-heritage, in grades 3 - 8. The program will provide 15 days of instruction for a total of 90 hours. Instruction will be based on the theme "A Trip to India: Exploring Eastern Hindi Belt". Our goal is to provide learners a learning experience that is meaningful and real world task oriented involving language, culture, and content, and move individual learner's proficiency level to at least a sub-level above their incoming level.

    Summary

    This four-week (July 9-August 3, 2018) intensive Swahili language program will take 20 students on a journey to explore East Africa. The program will integrate culture and content to help students gain Swahili language skills. Interactive classroom instructions will take place Mondays to Thursdays, and Fridays students will take instructional field trips to The Wilds, Hocking Hills and around the Athens vicinity. The participants, who can be either undergraduate or college ready high school students, will enroll in either elementary or intermediate classes for a total of 108 hours of instruction. Learning experiences will help students develop linguistic and cultural competence and prepare them for a visit to East Africa.

    At the end of the program, students will earn four semester hours of college credit, and students in the Elementary class will be able to perform at the Novice Mid proficiency level, while students in the Intermediate class will be able to perform at the Novice High/Intermediate Low levels according to the NCSSFL-ACTFL Global Can-Do Benchmarks.

    This non-residential program will draw participants will be drawn from Ohio University undergraduate students, students from other four-year institutions in Ohio, as well as high school students from schools within the vicinity of Ohio University.

    Summary

    The theme of the program will be "Preparation for a Business Trip to Russia," focusing on Russian language and cultural understanding in the business world for future business leaders which gives students the necessary skills for a successful trip to Russia by providing learner-centered language instruction using topics and situations related to students' professional goals. This theme will help students explore the use of the Russian language in the professional environment, learn about contemporary business opportunities in Russia, and understand the norms that are prevalent in Russian business culture today. The duration of the program is three weeks, for a total of ninety instructional hours and will be offered to local high school students and UCF undergraduate students, with a target enrollment of fifty participants. The participants will be divided into three groups of Novice Low to Novice-Mid level, with the latter group providing more in-depth content for returning STARTALK participants and those with some knowledge of the target language. The resource materials for future STARTALK Russian language programs will be developed and shared in the future language conferences and publication series continuing " Picturing Russia: A Research Guide to Russian Culture" and "Language and Culture of doing Business in Russia".

    Summary

    Speak and Connect is a three-week summer language program designed to introduce 50 high school students to Arabic, Portuguese and Russian language. They will be divided into five groups of 10. The program will have two sections for Arabic, two sections for Portuguese and one section for Russian. Selected students will participate in 90 hours of language instruction. Summer language acquisition will be maintained and expanded during the subsequent school year through participation in virtual and face-to-face language and cultural awareness sessions. Upon completion of the program students will have developed a novice/mid level of Arabic, Portuguese and Russian.

    Pitt Chinese STARTALK program will offer a three-week, non-residential language and culture program to 20 high school students for a total of 96 instructional hours at the University of Pittsburgh, Oakland campus. The standard-based and student-centered curriculum is guided by theme “A Bridge through Culture - Building Global Friendship” which aims to increase the linguistic and intercultural competence of these students through experiential learning with native speakers and immersion in Chinese cultural activities.     Summary

    The 2018 University of Utah (UU) Portuguese Startalk student program is an exciting opportunity for 30 rising seventh-grade Portuguese immersion students in Utah to push past the limitations of their classrooms and see how advanced levels of Portuguese language proficiency can open new doors for college and career readiness. A primary goal of the program is to provide the antidote to student attrition in dual language immersion programs, which commonly occurs as students move from the elementary to secondary school, by providing them with exciting ways to apply their growing language fluency to new subjects – in this case the Amazon, biodiversity, human rights and environmental issues. The program will feature three weeks of blended learning with 60 hours of Portuguese instruction and collaboration nestled between 30 hours of online, distance-learning curriculum. Students, including both heritage and non-heritage Portuguese speakers, will enter the student camp primarily at the intermediate-low proficiency level. During the camp experiences, student participants will engage in advanced-low discourse as they research issues of biodiversity, human rights, and environmental protection; compare and contrast Brazilian and American culture; discuss and debate controversial topics; and write informational essays and present group projects related to the Amazon Rainforest.

    Pan American STARTALK Summer Hindi Language Program 2018 will be a four-week program for heritage and non-heritage middle school and high school students. This program will follow STARTALK endorsed principles for effective teaching and learn with 100% usage of Hindi language. Students will read for gist and for detail, communicate and negotiate, create and present final projects related to the theme of the program “Let’s Go Green: Festivals and Environment.” Novice Mid and Novice High level students will focus on the festival celebrations in India whereas Intermediate students will create projects around the effects of celebrations on the environment. Students will celebrate Indian festivals while developing all modalities of Hindi Language skills. Students will be assessed and evaluated in all communicative modes and through real-life performance tasks. Students will be eligible to earn credits for Hindi as a foreign language.

    The STARTALK Hindi and Urdu Program Immersion Program will run from July 9 till July 27, 2018. The program will enroll 70 students for Hindi and Urdu language, 35 for Hindi and 35 for Urdu language whose proficiency will vary from Novice to Advanced. The instructional hours will be from 9.00 am to 3.00pm for three weeks onsite. The theme of the program is " Where Our Dreams Take Us: Immigration and Identity". The curriculum follows the backward design model and at the completion of the three week program students will be able to perform tasks in Novice to Advance range in accordance with the ACTFL Performance Guidelines for k-12 students(1999).
