    Summary

    At the conclusion of the program, our students will have the necessary linguistic and cultural skills to interact with Arabic speakers on basic, everyday topics, especially the topic of food. We will recruit 20 students to participate in this intensive Arabic program. Our participants will be high school and college students (grades 9-16). Their proficiency level in Arabic will be Novice-High by the conclusion of the program. We will conduct about 94 instructional hours throughout a four-week period, to extend from July 2nd to July 26th, 2019.

    Summary

    The theme of the program will be "STARTALK: Where East Meets West" focusing on Russian/Arabic language and cultural understanding in the professional world for future youth leaders which gives students the necessary skills for a successful trip to Russia/Arab World by providing learner-centered language instruction using topics and situations related to students' professional goals. This theme will help students explore the use of the Russian/Arabic language in the professional environment, learn about contemporary youth leadership festivals and understand the norms that are prevalent in Russian/Arabic youth culture today. The duration of the program is three weeks, for a total of ninety instructional hours and will be offered to local high school students and UCF undergraduate students, with a target enrollment of sixty participants. The participants will be divided into four groups of Novice Low to Novice-Mid level, with the latter group providing more in-depth content for returning STARTALK participants and those with some knowledge of the target language. The resource materials for future STARTALK language programs will be developed and shared in the future language conferences and publication series continuing " Picturing Russia: A Research Guide to Russian Culture" and "Language and Culture of doing Business in Russia" as well as developing Arabic resources.

    Summary

    14 rising high school 10-12 graders and Lewis University incoming freshmen, rising sophomores, and juniors with no prior knowledge of Russian will participate in Lewis University Summer StarTalk Program 2019. The program will immerse its participants into a culturally rich target language environment and will offer its students a variety of engaging, student- centered activities under the umbrella theme “Meeting Russia and Russians”. By the end of the Program, students are expected to develop interest in TL and culture and to reach basic (Novice Mid/Novice high) functional ability in Russian. The program will run for four weeks from June 17th and July 12th 2017, Monday through Friday and will provide 95 hours of instruction.

    Summary

    Housed in the heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown, the Mandarin Institute San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) STARTALK Middle and High School Program provides 36 students with a truly authentic, immersive learning environment designed to promote verbal skills and to imbue students with the confidence to use their language skills in real world situations for meaningful communication. During the 13 day program, students will participate in seven hours of engaging language study each day which includes classroom time, cultural units, mini-excursions into Chinatown and a distance learning component that matches each student with a personalized tutor in China for unrehearsed spontaneous dialogue. Our students go into the community and we bring the community into our program. Students register for middle school immersion or high school Chinese III and are expected to achieve Novice Intermediate to Intermediate Low ACTFL oral proficiency while gaining an appreciation for major cultural values and practices. Upon successful completion of the 90 hour High School program, students may earn one semester of high school foreign language credit depending on their school. At the end of the program our students will have the communicative competence and confidence to engage in authentic dialogues with native speakers in real-world situations.

    Summary

    This three-week Chinese immersion program will allow 48 participants grades, 3-5 and 6-8 to attain a novice-mid proficiency level in Chinese. During the six hour days, students will engage in dynamic task-based language learning, practicing martial arts, calligraphy, cooking, and Chinese ink painting. The theme Exploring China will explore different regions of China: North, South, East, and West. New students will learn about the geography, fauna, climate, clothes, monuments, and foods in thematic units; returning students will delve into math and scientific concepts to build kites, create timelines and a model of the Great Wall, study the tropical climate of the island of Taiwan, study the life cycle of silk worms and the life span of pandas, and grow bean sprouts to make tofu. A field trip to Concordia Language Villages Chinese Village, Sen Lin Hu, will provide a rich exchange of activities and an additional opportunity for interpersonal communication.

    Summary

    Chinmaya Mission STARTALK Summer Hindi Camp - 2019 (CMSSHC-19) will take place in Grayslake (a north-west suburb of Chicago), IL, July 15 to August 2, 2019, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (+ 60 minute daily online learning through Voicethread) offering 105 instructional hours over the 15 day camp (M-F each week for three weeks) to introduce forty eight 8-10 year old students to conversational and written Hindi at novice mid (proficiency) / novice high (performance) and novice high (proficiency) levels, with the theme: "Oh, The Places You'll Go".
    While virtually traveling to three different places in India (Delhi, Jaisalmer, and Goa), students will exchange information about themselves (name, age, where they are from and their family) with fellow travelers.
    Students will be able to ask and answer questions regarding their preferences (likes/dislikes) for various activities, topography, weather and food at each of the three places.
    At the end of the program, working in small groups, students will make a video presentation / poster board presentation of their trip in a mini travel fair for their classmates, parents.
    Working in teams of four, students will design and present their own tourist attraction, and present its features in Hindi.

    Summary

    OneWorld Now!’s vision is that all young Americans have access to transformative international education. Through our year-round Global Leadership Program we integrate critical language learning, leadership training, and study abroad scholarships for mostly underserved high school students. Thanks to STARTALK, OWN has offered a three-week Arabic, Chinese, and Korean summer program for each of the last eleven years, with follow-on language classes available through our academic year long program. In 2019 we again propose to hold a three-week-long, non-residential Arabic, Chinese, and Korean language immersion program for non-heritage high school students in Seattle, especially those who have fewer opportunities to access international education. The program includes 15 six-hour days, for a total of 90 contact hours. The desired outcome of the STARTALK-OWN Summer Language Camp will be to introduce 51 students to Arabic, Korean, and Mandarin Chinese, as well as to motivate them to continue their language and cultural studies.

    Summary

    The Washington County School District (WCSD) Startalk Chinese Summer Camp is an opportunity for 60 rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders from nine WCSD schools to join together for an intensive linguistic and cultural experience. The program will include 3 classrooms of 20 students each meeting daily for 6 hours per day for 10 days, 2 meetings of 2 hours each meeting at the school for students and families as a SKYPE night for students to speaker with middle school students in China in real time. There will also be an additional 30 hours online exploring China-Beyond your Imagination where students will explore Chinese music, dance, theatre, and sports. WCSD students will engage with each other and students from China, via electronic communication, as topics are explored and activities include group presentations, and informative oral and written assignments. After participating in the camp, students will be able to engage in Intermediate Mid level discourse regarding Chinese arts in China through sub-themes of similarity and differences and cultural awareness.

    Summary

    LARC at SDSU will offer four-week language instruction in Arabic, Persian, Portuguese, and Russian languages to 48 non-heritage students (12 for each language program) from July 8th to August 2nd​. The program will be open to students in grades 9-12 with no prior knowledge of the language. Students will receive 120 hours of instruction during the summer camp. This immersion program will use a thematic curriculum “Contemporary Life: Young Adults in a Big City,” to develop students’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while simultaneously developing their cultural competence in the language and culture. The targeted goals are novice-high in listening and speaking, and novice-mid in reading and writing. Upon successful completion, the students will be awarded four units of undergraduate college credit through the SDSU College of Extended Studies. The program has 15 hours of follow-up sessions over 5 months (3 hours per month).

    Summary

    From Day 1 of the Global Explorers: STARTALK Immersion Program full-day program (9AM-5PM), students will begin journeying to targeted regions of the world through virtual & live field trips to explore and engage in culturally relevant practices and customs. By the end of the Global Explorers program, students will have demonstrated the ability to meet Global Can-Do language proficiency benchmarks for Novice-Mid level, as outlined by the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSL), by completing three major assessments. The assessments are as follows: 1. The creation of a Video Travel Guide, highlighting all that they have learned about the target region and presented in the target language, 2. Participate in live poster presentations to family and the public about their travel expeditions, using a bilingual approach to best serve the target audience, and 3. participate in a live oral interview with a native speaking international student from an affiliate university, the University of South Florida. Overall, participants will develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the people, culture, region and target language through language and cultural immersion as they learn to think globally while acting locally, which is essential in ultimately improving international relations, national security, global economic and academic competitiveness. A total of 40 students will participate in the program over the course of 312 instructional hours from June 10th - August 2nd, 2019 (8-weeks).
