    Summary

    Sangam-Franklin STARTALK Hindi Language and Culture Program 2017, a three week (105 hours) project based language immersion program for 40 rising six to ninth graders, is focused on the theme, 'Stories from India: Pearls of Wisdom', that provides opportunities to students use the language for a variety of real-life purposes.
    The program aims to increase students' content knowledge, cultural experiences and literacy through storytelling under three sub-themes, ‘Stories of Animals and birds’, ‘My family stories’, and ‘Stories of my ‘Heroes’, leading to prepare students construct their own narratives. These goals are outlined in the curricula for two levels-Novice and Intermediate, which are based on ACTFL proficiency guidelines and the World Readiness Standards for Language Learning.
    By end of the program students will be able to communicate in culturally appropriate ways; understand and comprehend courtesy expressions and describe in simple language some familiar and unfamiliar real life situation, read and write simple texts in Hindi and reflect upon their thoughts and ideas in culturally appropriate context.
    An online follow up learning program during the post program months will be implemented to help learners sustain and improve their performance-based Hindi skills.

    The Middlebury School of Russian STARTALK program will enroll 16 participants, who are middle/high school teachers and graduate students in Russian and related fields, in a residential program that will last 17 days (5 days online and 12 days on-site) and over 70 hours of instruction. By the end of the program, participants will develop or significantly improve their understanding of the fundamentals of second language acquisition theories as they apply to teaching Russian, and gain hands-on experience with STARTALK-endorsed teaching principles, which inform curriculum development, lesson planning, task design and performance-based assessment. The participants will also have an opportunity to expand their professional networks and practice Russian language during program sessions as well as during formal and informal interactions with the Middlebury Russian School’s faculty and students.

    Summary

    The West Virginia Department of Education, in partnership with Monongalia County Schools, will offer the STARTALK: WVDE Chinese Immersion Summer Camp program for 80 elementary students through a ten-day instructional summer program with follow-up activities throughout the year (approximately 90 hours of total instruction). Monongalia County students who will enroll in grades 1-5 will have the opportunity to engage in a thematic and content-based summer camp experience in Morgantown, WV. Students will develop or advance their initial Chinese proficiency as they engage with Mandarin speaking instructors and facilitators. The focus of the 2016 camp will be Chinese and American food and their nutritional values. There will also be discussion as how exercise influences the intake of various foods.

    Summary

    The Gonzaga University Startalk Chinese Program provides instruction in Chinese to novice learners, both true beginners and students with some prior proficiency in Chinese. The program will be divided into two sessions, one for elementary school students and one for middle and high school students. To make the classroom activities relevant to students and motivate them in their learning, each session is organized around a theme; the theme for the elementary school session is “My Family, Your Family,” and the theme for the middle & high school session is “My Homestay in China.” By the end of the program, students in the elementary school session will be able to speak about themselves and their family members, and to interact with others to exchange information about the topic of the family. Students in the middle and high school classes will be able to conduct daily interactions in the language, such as meeting and greeting others, introducing themselves, and exchanging information about their likes and dislikes, their family, their school, their friends and their city. There will be 48 contact hours (42 contact hours for the elementary school session) and the program will last for three weeks, from June 19 to July 7, meeting five days per week, from 9am - noon (on Thursdays the middle and high school classes will run until 2pm). There is no class on the July 4 holiday. In addition to language-learning, there are cultural activities including singing, arts and crafts, games and cooking. Students in the high school program are eligible to participate in an on-line continuation class after the face to face component ends. For high school students who are interested, we will help you petition your high school to receive high school credit for the session.

    Summary

    Housed in the heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown, the Mandarin Institute San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) STARTALK Middle and High School Program provides 36 students with a truly authentic, immersive learning environment designed to promote verbal skills and to imbue students with the confidence to use their language skills in real world situations for meaningful communication.

    During the three week program, students will participate in six hours of engaging language study each day which includes classroom time, cultural units, mini-excursions into Chinatown and a distance learning component that matches each student with a personalized tutor in China for unrehearsed spontaneous dialogue. Our students go into the community and we bring the community into our program.

    Students register for Immersion grades 6/7 or 8/9 or High school Chinese III and are expected to achieve Novice Intermediate to Intermediate ACTFL oral proficiency while gaining an appreciation for major cultural values and practices. Upon successful completion of the 90 hour program, high school students may earn one semester of high school foreign language credit pending their school requirements.

    At the end of the program our students will have the communicative competence and confidence to engage in authentic dialogues with native speakers in real-world situations.

    Summary

    The 3-week residential teacher training program, preceded by 2-week pre-program online training, aims to train 12 teachers to learn to teach Mandarin Chinese to 9-12 graders ONLINE. Trainees will earn up to five graduate credits in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. The integration of both theory and practice will be delivered through a blended instructional model before, during, and after the program. The program ensures quality instruction and guides trainees to achieve three goals: 1) to effectively implement world-readiness standards in thematic and curricular design and STARTALK-endorsed principles for effective teaching and learning, 2) to strengthen their observation and practicum experience in online teaching, and 3) to further their pursuit of teaching certification for career advancement. The capstone in the development of trainees’ competence will be the completion of an E-portfolio that documents trainees’ extensive learning experiences in launching or advancing their careers in teaching online Mandarin Chinese courses.     Pitt Chinese STARTALK program will offer a 3-week non-residential language and culture program to 20 rising 9th-12th graders in high school for a total of 96 instructional hours at the University of Pittsburgh, Oakland campus. The standard-based and student-centered curriculum is guided by theme “A Bridge through Culture - Building Global Friendship” which aims to develop students’ linguistic and intercultural competence through experiential learning with native speakers and immersion in Chinese cultural activities. Upon conclusion of this program, students will be expected to have an ACTFL Novice-Min/High proficiency level in speaking, reading, writing, and listening.

    Summary

    This three week summer intensive program will take place June 23-July 14. Seattle Public Schools (SPS) Startalk Teacher Certification Program will start a new Cohort 11 of 5 Chinese, 3 Korean and 3 Portuguese speaking teacher candidates to join the returning Cohort 10 (4 participants) in a state approved teacher certification program. Cohort 10 will take its own 6 graduate level credits in the alternate route teacher certification sequence, totaling 180 instructional hours . The new Cohort 11 will begin their initial set of courses for 6 graduate level classes. Day 1 (Friday, June 23) features the orientation to certification seminar and first day of classes, with the following Week 1 consisting of morning certification classes and afternoon lab school prep. Weeks 2 and 3 will consist of a supervised morning lab school practicum with a working lunch debrief and prep in the afternoons. Those in Cohort 10 who completed summer 2016 and who have also completed the fall Issues of Child Abuse and Neglect class, spring student teaching and the culminating EdTPA, will be eligible for state teaching certificates by the end of Summer 2017.

    The Hudson STARTALK Portuguese Language & Cultures Summer Camp, will support 30 students over 15 days of summer camp, from June 23, 2017 – July 14, 2017, providing students with 90 hours of instruction during the summer. We will offer two classes: one class for heritage speakers with the objective of developing proficiency in Portuguese and an appreciation for students’ heritage; the other class, for non-heritage speakers with little to no previous knowledge of the language, will introduce students to the Portuguese language and cultures. Both classes will utilize classroom instruction, curriculum, assessments, performance activities, field trips, workshops and guest speakers to help them develop skills in the interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes.

    This program provides two two-week sessions for up to 15 total teachers to learn to deliver instruction and assess student learning in a standards-based instructional program at the K-12 level. The classes are five days a week, six hours a day (84 total hours of direct instruction), and also include a Modified Oral Proficiency Interview (MOPI) or Integrated Performance Assessment two-day training workshop during the middle weekend. The outcomes of the program will be found in an e-portfolio and include: a micro-teaching lesson in the co-located student program, a reflective journal on participants’ learning and classroom observations, a final paper containing an assessment of student learning and trainees’ teaching, and an understanding of the importance of “backward design” and how it leads to better learning for students. These outcomes help to increase the sustainability of these educators in the classroom during regular year/academic year programs; the skills and knowledge that they gain in this program are directly transferred to the co-located student program and also to their teaching during the academic year. Many teachers return to the program as a way of continuing their professional development because every year we differentiate the courses according to the expressed needs and wishes of our participants.
