    Summary

    The North Central College Chinese program will partner with local schools to provide a STARTALK teacher program for 12 teachers of Mandarin Chinese with varied teaching experience. This program, focusing on equipping participants with strategies and tools in selecting and applying authentic materials in Chinese language classrooms, is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online formats. The program, with a total instructional time of over 90 hours, combines a 10-day face-to-face workshop and 2 online modules, to guide participants to use authentic materials and apply effective teaching strategies in unit and lesson planning. To ensure the continued support for participants’ application of training content, two post-program reunions and sharing activities are designed during the fall and winter. The expected outcomes are that participants are able to select age-appropriate authentic materials for their lessons, scaffold student learning through effective teaching strategies and tools, and develop performance- based assessment using authentic materials.

    Summary

    The Anchorage School District’s STARTALK Summer Chinese Language and Culture Camp is a two-week, ten-day, morning and afternoon non-residential program held in June 2018 at Scenic Park Elementary School. The camp serves 80 students from Anchorage area schools in grades 1-8, mostly at the Novice-Low proficiency level with some at Novice-Mid. The camp provides 55 instructional hours at 5.5 hours per day. An afterschool Chinese intensive program at Scenic Park operates three hours/week for six weeks into the 2018-2019 year, serving up to 40 students, some of whom attended camp. Student outcomes include: increased Chinese language skills, increased knowledge of and appreciation for Chinese culture, and intention to continue Chinese studies through secondary school.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Performance Assessment Training Program at the Center for Applied Linguistics will use a blended online and face-to-face format to train up to 40 STARTALK educators representing all grade and experience levels and STARTALK languages on the fundamentals of performance-based assessment within the STARTALK context. The program will consist of seven online modules, two webinars, and a three-day face-to-face workshop over the course of 7 continuous weeks. Participants who complete the program will develop performance assessment tasks, adapt rating rubrics, create self-assessment tools for students, and create a standards- and curriculum-based assessment plan with performance objectives. Participants will be prepared to continue to develop these tools and integrate best practices in assessment with best practices in instruction into their teaching. After active instruction ends, the online modules will remain available as a continued reference and for sharing materials and resources until March 31, 2019.

    Summary

    The proposed Chicago Public Schools (CPS) STARTALK program will provide a rich, hands-on, language immersion program in Arabic and Chinese to 30 high school students (9th-11th grade) who have already completed one to two years of Arabic instruction or two to three years of Chinese instruction. The program will be housed at the University of Chicago (UChicago) campus and classes will be conducted by U of C instructors. The program is intended to give students an opportunity to practice and improve their language skills through real-life applications and varied authentic experiences in alignment with STARTALK principles. Participants will attend classes Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, starting July 2 and ending July 27, 2018 with a total of 95 hours of instruction.

    Summary

    ALEFE summer program “Celebrations of Arab Nations” is a 22 days summer camp intended to allow twenty heritage and non-heritage students to develop both their communication skills in Arabic and their cultural awareness about the Arab world. In a Montessori classroom set-up, students will be exposed to the various ways in which Arab nations celebrate three special occasions: weddings, mother’s day and baby showers. They will acquire new knowledge about the way these special occasions are celebrated in terms of food, costumes, social figures and family traditions. Through the study of the three celebrations, the program is to allow K-2nd grade students with limited or no proficiency in Arabic to interact using simple vocabulary and sentences to communicate with an authentic audience and to use their new acquired knowledge to create and present three mock celebrations themselves to others. Following the program’s 90 hours of instructions, students will be able not only to compare the similarities and differences between cultural practices in the US and in the Arab World, but to also realize how internally diverse an apparently monolithic culture could be.

    Summary

    The Korean American Center in partnership with UC Irvine’s Center for Critical Korean Studies, will host a summer middle school immersion program for Korean heritage language learners going into the 6th through 8th grades in the fall of 2018. The program will be designed to build comprehensive language skills and improve students’ knowledge of Korean through classroom immersion. Students will improve their understanding of Korean culture and explore the connection between culture, arts and language by participating in fun, hands-on cultural activities such as arts, crafts, calligraphy, music and cooking. This program will take place at the Korean American Center in Irvine and will run for 4 weeks (July 9, 2018 – August 3, 2018), Mondays through Fridays from 9:00AM-2:00PM.

    The Chinese Language and Culture Academy is a 15-day, morning and afternoon, non-residential program running from July 2 to July 21, 2018, at the State University of New York, College at Oswego. The program will recruit a total of 60 students ranging from the 3rd to the 12th grade. The three-week program will provide a total of 90 instructional hours at six hours per day. Depending on their entry level, students are expected to advance their Chinese language proficiency to novice-mid and novice-high levels by the end of program. There will be six follow-up cultural workshops to promote cultural awareness during the 2018-19 school year.

    Summary

    The 2018 STARTALK funds will guarantee continued Arabic culture and language learning opportunities at Bell and Hamilton High Schools (levels I and heritage speakers, grades 7th through 12th). The program will offer 60 students the opportunity to receive Arabic immersed instruction of 90 hours (75 hours of face-to face and 15 hours) asynchronous learning model enhanced through culture, technology, and social media from July 16, 2018 to July 18th , 2018. The goal of the program is to increase oral and written proficiency by one sub-level on the ACTFL Proficiency Scales (Arabic I NM-NH, Heritage IM-IH). We anticipate that approximately 95% of our Level I, and heritage students will continue in our 2018- 2019 academic year to increase enrollment in Arabic I and Arabic III, and IV Honors programs offered by the two schools.

    The Virginia Beach Summer STARTALK Academies seek to provide easily accessible, free opportunities for language and culture learning to students throughout the school division, reflecting the diverse learners in our community. 45 fifth grade students will be selected by lottery for the Chinese language strand and 30 for the Russian strand; participants from last summer’s program will be invited to attend advanced classes. The program will be held from June 25 to July 19, 2018, Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM -12:00 PM (minus July 4th) totaling 64 instructional hours with the field trip. After-school Post-Sessions are planned to extend student cultural knowledge and language proficiency.

    Chinmaya Mission STARTALK Summer Hindi Camp - 2018 (CMSSHC-18) will take place in Grayslake (a north-west suburb of Chicago), IL, July 9th to July 27th, 2018, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (+ 60 minute daily online learning through Voicethread) offering 105 instructional hours over the 15 day camp (M-F each week for three weeks) to introduce thirty six 8-10 year old students to conversational and written Hindi at novice mid (proficiency) / novice high (performance) and novice high (proficiency) / levels.
    With the theme "Oh, The Places You'll Go", students plan a trip to the newly formed state of Uttarakhand, which is located in the northern part of India, by creating an itinerary. They choose to visit different places in Uttarakhand after learning about special attractions / activities / weather / food / wildlife in 4-5 different cities / towns in Uttarakhand. Students research locations, visiting websites, watching videos / pictures of the region, and exploring the possibility of volunteering in a nature preserve or other situation. Students will make connections with other disciplines through hands on activities, such as math, science, geography, arts, health, and nutrition, by communicating in all three modes of communication - interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. They will be immersed in cultural practices (such as folk dances, songs, greetings, showing respect to elders), products (such as food, clothing, books, music, movies) of Uttarakhand, and perspectives of native speakers of Uttarakhand by meeting with the members of Uttarakhand Samaj of Greater Chicago, a local community organization of Uttarakhand natives.
