    Summary

    Forest Hills STARTALK Summer Hindi Language Program is a four-week program for heritage, non-heritage and native middle school and high school students. This program is designed to engage students in the rich Hindi language and culture through the STARTALK endorsed principles. Students will virtually visit India, celebrate festivals, explore the impact on the environment, and find optional possible ways to celebrate festivals. Students will read for gist and for detail, communicate and negotiate, create and present final projects related to the theme of the program “Let’s Go Green: Travel, Festivals, and Environment.” Students will produce real-life situations and experiences in India while bringing culture, content, communities, and comparisons through communications (Using Five Cs). Aligned with the theme of the program students will Skype with members of the local Indian heritage community of middle and high school students in India and quantify their learning by investigating and interrogating students in India. This program will recruit and select 45 students with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, including students returning from the previous STARTALK programs. Students will earn credits for Hindi as a foreign language. This four weeks program will be offered Monday –Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. from July 8, 2019, to August 2, 2019

    Summary

    The Fayette County Public School District’s 2019 STARTALK Chinese Summer Program will provide 55 instructional hours via a 2-week summer program for 110 district students (rising grades 1 – 6) who are currently studying Chinese language in district schools as well as native/heritage speakers in those grades and schools. Expected outcomes for our novice-mid through intermediate-low learners include 1) students will sustain and/or improve their language proficiency levels (novice – intermediate); 2) students will increase their intercultural communication including knowledge of and experience with Chinese culture; and 3) student experiences will provide valuable PR and help retain students as they move on to middle school language studies while also building interest among other students to participate in school-year Chinese classes and future STARTALK programs. The program will result in an increase in the number of students studying Chinese throughout the secondary grades and eventually at the postsecondary level, strengthening the K – 16 pipeline, while also helping to increase the number of district programs. Participating students will develop an expanded world view and appreciation for other cultures and meeting the district’s mission of creating a collaborative community that ensures all students achieve at high levels and graduate prepared to excel in a global society. The program will also engage parents in actively supporting the district’s Chinese language program, which may play a critical role in the district continuing to fund the offering of Chinese in future years.

    Summary

    The Student Program component of the 2019 GLP STARTALK Combination Program will be a thirteen day student program run as a strand within a successful existing summer camp, Graham Windham Manhattanville, for 40 to 45 inner city students in 6th to 8th grade. The student program will follow the themes 'Let's Go to Chinatown!' and 'All About Me,' and provide a novice level entry point into the acquisition of Chinese focused on personal identity and planning a trip to Chinatown. The 30 hours of instructional activities will be focused on achievable novice mid to novice high goals for elementary and middle school students, with the culminating objective being a visit to Chinatown where students will interact with native speakers. This student program will be run concurrently with Global Language Project’s teacher program. Under the guidance of lead instructors, camp staff will implement a program that incorporates STARTALK best practices for the benefit of the campers and for the teacher program participants who will be teaching in the camp during the last week of the program.

    Summary

    The Silk Road will be the theme of our 2019 three-week, 120 hours student program for forty-two (42) grades 4-12 learners in northern New England with learners' proficiency from novice-low to intermediate-high at Husson University, Bangor, Maine. For the summer 2019, the Bangor Chinese School will continue to provide both new and tested teaching strategies and student learning experiences. Students will gain the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in a learning environment featuring language "immersion". BCS now offers to provide a year-eleven of instruction and learning experience in which students will take part in standards-based, student-centered language and culture immersion, thematic organized learning with target language and advanced educational technology. The goal of the learning process is to move each student’s proficiency levels up by the end of the program. It is also the intention of BCS to expand learning experiences for students outside the classroom, including opportunities for students to communicate with Chinese counterparts/friends through the Internet, including, Skype and WeChat which has been done very successfully in the past years. All master teachers of student program are required to participate in the BCS’s STARTALK teacher program to ensure the teaching quality of the program. It is hoped that following the program the participants and their families will be motivated to continue pursuing on-going language-speaking and cultural opportunities to enrich their own knowledge, and promote the ancient and rich Chinese heritage, allowing better understanding and effective diplomacy with that area of the world, be prepared to be able to compete for global jobs, manage multicultural colleagues and collaborate on global teams. Simply stated, if we are to face the challenges of the future with confidence, we must start now, using ACTFL standards and STARTALK principles, in building a cadre of young Americans who comprehend, speak and read this lovely, ancient and "critical" world language.

    Summary

    AKEEP STARTALK: “Catch the K-Wave!” is a 3-week (15 days) from 8:20 am to 3 pm non-residential program provided by the Alabama-Korea Education & Economic Partnership (AKEEP) to teach Korean language and culture to thirty-three (33), diverse learners, both heritage and non-heritage rising 6th – 8th graders. An application and in-person interview process will group students based on their language acquisition and proficiency level so that we can target their performance levels from Novice Low to High of the ACTFL language levels upon completion of the program. 102 instructional hours including 2-hour graduation ceremony and reception with 90% target language immersion will maximize a student’s performance and better assess the program’s outcomes through our 3-tiered proficiency levels and 4 specific language modes for teaching, learning, and a project platform.
    They will compare and relate to youth cultures in Korea vs America and learn authentic language using popular K-pop and K-drama in our theme, Catch the K-Wave with teen series. Finally, they will perform practical presentational skills like arts, dance, drama, and skits using the middle schoolers’ interpretive culture, currently popular K-pop songs and K-dramas, to communicate with their friends and family in the Korean language and culturally appropriate manner.

    The YingHua-Startalk Student Program will fully engaged 48 rising 3rd to 9th grade students in Mandarin Chinese language & Chinese culture in a fun, practical and real-life environment. Students may come from diverse socio-economic, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds & various Chinese proficiency levels ranging from beginner level to Intermediate High. This 4-week program includes 1-week online learning + 3-week face-to-face summer program with 2 field trips to authentic Chinese environment to get a chance of practicing what they learned. 3-weeks of face-to-face instruction are standards-aligned, science-oriented, culturally-enriching, and fully-immersed with theme based learning opportunities. Beyond the Program, student participants can choose to remain engaged with the vibrant learning community that is YingHua International School through our Full time enrollment, Afternoon Education Programs and/or Summer Camp. Participants have to be fully committed to completing the whole program which include sustaining Chinese learning after the summer program to maximize the learning experience.

    This three-week program will engage 120 mostly heritage speakers of Portuguese, in grade one through grade eight, in 75 hours of age-and-stage appropriate language instruction around the theme "A trip through Three Portuguese-Speaking Regions: Portugal, Brazil and the Azores Islands". Student proficiency levels will range from Novice to Intermediate. The expected outcomes will be that all students 1) increase Portuguese proficiency levels by at least one level, 2) increase Portuguese cultural awareness, appreciation and knowledge, 3) increase interest in other Portuguese language learning programs throughout the school year within educational institutions and the community.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Summer Program in Kansas City offers three-week intensive language and culture learning experience to 60 learners from grades 3-8, both true beginners and students with some prior proficiency in Chinese, in greater Kansas City metro area. Underserved, marginalized and rural population are encouraged specifically to apply and participate.

    Based on the students’ age group, the program will be divided into two sections, one for rising 3rd - 5th graders, one for rising 6th - 8th graders. Each section is divided into a Level 1 class for novice learners and a Level 2 class for returning students or heritage learners.

    Students will attend six-and-half hours of activities daily consisting of three-hour task-based language learning classes, one-hour cultural seminar, and hands-on activities, half-hour morning Chinese exercises, half-hour separate group activity, half-an-hour recess, and a one-hour complimentary lunch, for a total of 91 instructional hours for three weeks.

    During our three-week intensive study, students will reach communicative proficiency, exemplifying the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) via our standards-based, student-centered, language-immersed and culturally-enriched curricula.

    This program is a four-week intensive program that is designed to move students forward in their Russian language proficiency development. It incorporates learners from grades 1-12 from the Novice to the Intermediate-low levels. In grades 3-6, the students experience a content-related FLES program that introduces them to Russian language and culture. In grades 7-12, students are placed according to their previous learning experience in level 1-3 classes. The theme of this year's program will be related to traveling to Russia. The program will run from June 26-July 19, 2019.
