    ABC Houston STARTALK Student Program aims to raise the awareness of and stimulate students’ interest in learning Chinese language and culture. The program will collaborate with Neff Elementary School and offer 5 classes. We will recruit 60 elementary students ranging from 1st to 5th graders. The Program lasts four weeks in June, providing 96 hours of exciting and rigorous language and culture instruction. Students will be led to explore the richness of Chinese culture through various activities in an interactive learning environment.

    Summary

    This blended 96 hour camp (total 18 days program with 12 days face to face and six days of pre-camp online segment) with two weekend breaks will target 75 middle and high school students and will be based on five C’s to help students in developing proficiency in three modes of communication. Lesson plans will be developed keeping main focus on culture besides the target language and will be posted on www.balvihar.org for Startalk reference and community. The program will be centered on learners and full attention will be paid to individual needs. Best practices in instruction and assessment will be implemented. We will use differentiating tasks to address different levels (novice, intermediate and advance) of proficiency in aural and literacy skills.

    The Indus Arts Council Urdu STARTALK Program will offer another exciting 15 days hands-on learning opportunity to 50 local upper elementary and middle school students to improve their Urdu language skills and their familiarity with Urdu culture. and their familiarity with Urdu culture. 2. Instructional hours will be between 9:00AM and 3:00PM 3. We strive to provide total immersive and conducive environment inside and outside the class to make learning fun and engaging. 4. Students will improve their proficiency in Urdu language and culture through an engaging curriculum that integrates age-appropriate content goals with language learning and cultural goals. 5. The program will also strengthen students’ ties with the local Urdu- speaking community and it will help promote the study of and awareness of Urdu and its culture in the Houston area.

    Summary

    The 2018 STARTALK Paint Branch Chinese STEAM and Culture Summer Academy will offer 60 elementary
    novice students an intense but fun and innovative science and culture-oriented summer immersion three-week experience for 94 instructional hours. It is open to all students currently in grades kindergarten to fifth in Prince George's County, Maryland and its neighboring areas. Students will be divided into three classes of 20 students according to their grade levels: kindergarten and 1st grades, 2nd and 3rd grades, and 4th and 5th grades. Based on the theme,"From Seeds to Table", students will be able to make healthy choices, create colorful salads, demonstrate the understanding of where ingredients are from as well as basic nutrition. We will also introduce certain common Chinese vegetables and dishes. Hands-on activities will range from growing healthy food to exploring Chinese arts and crafts. There are two field trips planned for the camp.

    The STARTALK- A Trip to the Arab World Arabic summer program held at the First Presbyterian Church of El Paso is a three-week immersion program (June 11 –June 29) designed for elementary students, rising 3rd to 5th graders. The number of students enrolled is 36 divided into two classes Arabic I and one class Arabic II. The program consists of 105 hours of instruction. At the end of the program students will be able to perform at the Novice Low/Mid level according to the NCSSFL-ACTFL Global Can-Do Benchmarks.

    Summary

    The four-credit graduate-level course, entitled “Second Language and Immersion Methodologies for STARTALK Teachers of Critical Languages,” is a 10-day residential program hosted by Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota, and takes place on the campus of Bemidji State University (BSU).
    The course consists of 80 instructional hours, not including informal discussions and personal reflection, and focuses on key concepts of immersion education and active participation in all aspects of language and culture programming at the Language Villages. STARTALK teachers learn and practice: a) strategies for staying in the target language in both formal and informal instructional settings; b) formative and summative Standards-based assessments of students’ communication skills and cultural understandings; c) content-based teaching strategies, with emphasis on the environment, drama and music; d) integrating culture into the teaching of language; and e) meeting the needs of diverse learners. A perennial highlight of our program is several visits to our youth Language Villages in session at that time, where participants observe class concepts put into practice.

    Participants receive tuition, room & board, four units of graduate credit from Concordia College and up to $500 of travel-expense reimbursement, all for free, thanks to the STARTALK grant.

    Summary

    Yuva Hindi Sansthan, in partnership with North PennSchool District, proposes its sixth YHS STARTALK Hindi Language and Culture Program 2018 from June 18-July 6 to teach Hindi to 40 K-8 students of ages 8 to 13. We will develop three levels of curricula for two Novice and one Intermediate ranges of ACTFL proficiency guidelines under the overarching overarching theme, 'My virtual trip to India', divided into three sub-themes, 'food, festival and places of various regions of India' to provide information in chunks and recycle them. By end of the units Novice level learners will be able to do basic tasks, such as, identifying characters and events and presenting in culturally appropriate manner while Intermediate students will pair and share, compare and contrast information with their own experiences and ideas in USA. Our instructors will receive program specific professional development training under the guidance of a pedagogy expert and a K-8 literacy expert in the pre-program period. A structured post-program follow up plan will be implemented to help students sustain and improve their skills.

    Summary

    Housed in the heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown, the Mandarin Institute San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) STARTALK Middle and High School Program provides 36 students with a truly authentic, immersive learning environment designed to promote verbal skills and to imbue students with the confidence to use their language skills in real world situations for meaningful communication.

    During the three week program, students will participate in six hours of engaging language study each day which includes classroom time, cultural units, mini-excursions into Chinatown and a distance learning component that matches each student with a personalized tutor in China for unrehearsed spontaneous dialogue. Our students go into the community and we bring the community into our program.

    Students register for middle school immersion or high school Chinese III and are expected to achieve
    Novice Intermediate to Intermediate Low ACTFL oral proficiency while gaining an appreciation for major cultural values and practices. Upon successful completion of the 90 hour High School program, students may earn one semester of high school foreign language credit.

    At the end of the program our students will have the communicative competence and confidence to engage in authentic dialogues with native speakers in real-world situations.

    Summary

    Huayuan Chinese Academy’s “STARTALK STEM-Integrated Chinese Learning Program” will immerse 45 rising 2nd through 5th graders in a Chinese language and culture environment for a total of 91 instructional hours over 3 weeks, June 25-July 13, 2018, followed by a 10-week fall Extension Program. The curriculum is constructed around the storyline of the fictional character Water Baby’s fun life, magic show, and adventures, with the STEM-based theme “Explore Water, an Essential Element of Life.” The curriculum integrates hands-on linguistic, cultural, and scientific activities, all designed based on the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. At the end of the program, students will be able to greet each other, exchange simple information about themselves and their family members, as well as topics related to three states of water, water cycle, and water pollution, and follow simple steps in Chinese for scientific experiments.

    Summary

    North Central College proposes a student and teacher combination program in 2018. The student program will be 14-day hybrid non-residential program with two-level classes. The Level One (novice-low) program is "Journey to the Great Wall." The Level Two (novice-mid/high) program is “Working Together with China.” Up to 24 high school students will be enrolled in the program. The program will start with a half-day orientation on June 16, 2018, and then followed by a one-week online instruction and one-week full day onsite activities. It will be concluded by a series of online interactive activities. Some additional excursions and opportunities to practice skills learned for a total of 90 hours of instructional time. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will have earned college certificate.
