    Forest Hills STARTALK Summer Hindi Language Program is a four-week program for heritage, non-heritage and native middle school and high school students. This program is designed to engage students in the rich Hindi language and culture through the STARTALK endorsed principles. Students will virtually visit India, celebrate festivals, explore the impact on the environment, and find optional possible ways to celebrate festivals. Students will read for gist and for detail, communicate and negotiate, create and present final projects related to the theme of the program “Let’s Go Green: Travel, Festivals, and Environment.” Students will produce real-life situations and experiences in India while bringing culture, content, communities, and comparisons through communications (Using Five Cs). Aligned with the theme of the program students will Skype with members of the local Indian heritage community of middle and high school students in India and quantify their learning by investigating and interrogating students in India. This program will recruit and select 45 students with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, including students returning from the previous STARTALK programs. Students will earn credits for Hindi as a foreign language. This four weeks program will be offered Monday –Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. from July 8, 2019, to August 2, 2019

    Pitt STARTALK “We're Off to Russia!” is an intensive four-week-long Russian summer school for high school students that is administered by the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) and will take place on June 17 through July 12, 2019 on Pitt campus. 20 students from five partnering high schools that offer academic year Russian language programs (Pittsburgh Brashear High School, Penn Trafford High School, Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School, Pritzker College Prep, and Noble Academy) along with students from other U.S. high schools will participate in this Russian language and culture program. The curriculum that is based on the theme “We’re Off to Russia!” will prepare participants for a study-abroad program in Russia. Besides performance-based instructions that target the acquisition of speaking, listening, reading, and writing proficiency in Russian, high school students will also have a chance to explore Russian culture around Pittsburgh, by visiting a Russian church, buying groceries in a Russian store, cooking Russian cuisine, learning Russian songs and poems, participating in Russian art and craft workshops, and meeting with the members of the local Russian community.

    The 2019 VSCSA program at the University of Virginia aims to provide a linguistically and culturally enriched online learning environment for 24 high school students who are rising 9th-12th graders in the Commonwealth of Virginia and other regions in the US. Students will embark on a 12-day virtual journey in Beijing from July 5 to July 18 in 2019 that concurs with the major time frame of the VSCTA teacher program. Upon the completion of the program, the learners will develop a positive “Can-Do” attitude and attain proficiency at the intermediate-low level according to ACTFL’s proficiency guidelines. Curricular requirements and lesson plans will be effectively implemented in alignment with the can-do statements across the three communicative modes specified in the online LinguiaFolio. The total instructional hours are 45 hours, including time committed to online orientation and synchronous and asynchronous online learning. The program features quality online learning that is made possible by research-endorsed best practices in language pedagogy and cutting-edge technology platform and tools. Learners have ample opportunities to engage in active learning that is intended to be fun, engaging, and motivating. Students who successfully complete the program will receive a $25 gift certificate and a Certificate of Excellence in Learning.     Summary

    The Silk Road will be the theme of our 2019 three-week, 120 hours student program for forty-two (42) grades 4-12 learners in northern New England with learners' proficiency from novice-low to intermediate-high at Husson University, Bangor, Maine. For the summer 2019, the Bangor Chinese School will continue to provide both new and tested teaching strategies and student learning experiences. Students will gain the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in a learning environment featuring language "immersion". BCS now offers to provide a year-eleven of instruction and learning experience in which students will take part in standards-based, student-centered language and culture immersion, thematic organized learning with target language and advanced educational technology. The goal of the learning process is to move each student’s proficiency levels up by the end of the program. It is also the intention of BCS to expand learning experiences for students outside the classroom, including opportunities for students to communicate with Chinese counterparts/friends through the Internet, including, Skype and WeChat which has been done very successfully in the past years. All master teachers of student program are required to participate in the BCS’s STARTALK teacher program to ensure the teaching quality of the program. It is hoped that following the program the participants and their families will be motivated to continue pursuing on-going language-speaking and cultural opportunities to enrich their own knowledge, and promote the ancient and rich Chinese heritage, allowing better understanding and effective diplomacy with that area of the world, be prepared to be able to compete for global jobs, manage multicultural colleagues and collaborate on global teams. Simply stated, if we are to face the challenges of the future with confidence, we must start now, using ACTFL standards and STARTALK principles, in building a cadre of young Americans who comprehend, speak and read this lovely, ancient and "critical" world language.

    PASSPORT TO BRAZIL
    From July 8 through August 2, 2019, the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS), in collaboration with Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) will offer a four-week STARTALK Portuguese Language and Brazilian Culture program on the Oakland campus for 20 high school students entering grades 9-12. Students will receive 120 hours (5 days/week, 6 hours/day) of instruction integrating language and culture through engaging and authentic learning opportunities. Proficiency goals will range between Novice High and Intermediate Mid, depending upon the number of years students have been enrolled in Portuguese classes. Applicants will be selected based on demonstrated interest, academic record, and teacher recommendation. Preference will be given to PPS students who have either studied Portuguese during the previous school year, or plan to do so the following year.

    The 2019 STARTALK Denton ISD, non-residential, intensive Russian summer program - Welcome to My World - will provide four weeks and 120 instructional hours of student-centered learning and instruction in Russian to 11th and 12th graders and UNT undergraduate students at the Novice level. The program participants will be given the opportunity to become part of our University of North Texas (UNT) learning community and will study Russian through full immersion in Russian language and authentic Russian culture, which is integrated in every learning episode.

    Upon the successful completion of the program, our students will achieve the High Novice level of language proficiency in Russian, will be able to communicate appropriately at the High Novice level and will enhance their cultural awareness. Additionally, all students who successfully complete the program will be awarded 3 college credit hours free of charge. In-class tuition, all cultural activities, including field trips, all learning and teaching materials will be provided free of charge to all students.     HEB ISD’s “STARTALK: Building a Legacy” language academy will provide three weeks / 90 hours of student-centered learning and instruction in Arabic, Chinese, and Hindi to rising sixth and seventh graders for novice level, and intermediate level practice for 8th-11th grade students, as well as exposure to all three languages and cultures. Projected enrollment for Arabic, Chinese, and Hindi is 50 students per language, comprising 30 novice sixth and seventh graders and 20 intermediate students. At the end of this academy, we expect rising sixth and seventh-grade students to achieve novice low-to-mid level oral proficiency in their language of choice and upper grades students to achieve intermediate low-to-mid level. We anticipate that approximately 90% of our seventh-grade students will continue in the language course in the fall in our district. For intermediate students, we expect their scores on the IB exams to reflect the benefits of additional language practice and cultural experience.

    Summary

    Sangam-Franklin STARTALK HINDI 2019 is a 3 week, 105 instructional hours immersion program targeting 40 rising six to Ninth graders in Franklin, New Jersey, who will be recruited through an online application process and placed in four classes of Novice and Intermediate levels. We will improve their speaking, reading and writing proficiency in Hindi using curricula and learning plans for two levels, Novice and Intermediate, based on the backward design principles, using carefully selected traditional and contemporary cultural stories from India in order to engage learners in experiencing and exploring the world around them under the overarching theme, 'StoryTelling’, divided into three sub-themes: Personal, Traditional, and Contemporary inspirational stories. By end of the units, students will not only learn new terms and expressions about people, places, animals and birds, but also interpret the theme and messages out of the stories while reconstructing their own narratives. Various forms of traditional storytelling such as puppetry and street performances, that take place during festivals and events in India, will be used for rich learning experiences. A day long field trip will be organized to provide students opportunities for interactions with native speakers on familiar and unfamiliar topics and on the final day of the program they will present their stories at a ‘Story Festival’ to reflect their language skills in the presence of parents and guests.

    At the conclusion of the program, our students will have the necessary linguistic and cultural skills to interact with Arabic speakers on basic, everyday topics, especially the topic of food. We will recruit 20 students to participate in this intensive Arabic program. Our participants will be high school and college students (grades 9-16). Their proficiency level in Arabic will be Novice-High by the conclusion of the program. We will conduct about 94 instructional hours throughout a four-week period, to extend from July 2nd to July 26th, 2019.

    Summary

    The theme of the program will be "STARTALK: Where East Meets West" focusing on Russian/Arabic language and cultural understanding in the professional world for future youth leaders which gives students the necessary skills for a successful trip to Russia/Arab World by providing learner-centered language instruction using topics and situations related to students' professional goals. This theme will help students explore the use of the Russian/Arabic language in the professional environment, learn about contemporary youth leadership festivals and understand the norms that are prevalent in Russian/Arabic youth culture today. The duration of the program is three weeks, for a total of ninety instructional hours and will be offered to local high school students and UCF undergraduate students, with a target enrollment of sixty participants. The participants will be divided into four groups of Novice Low to Novice-Mid level, with the latter group providing more in-depth content for returning STARTALK participants and those with some knowledge of the target language. The resource materials for future STARTALK language programs will be developed and shared in the future language conferences and publication series continuing " Picturing Russia: A Research Guide to Russian Culture" and "Language and Culture of doing Business in Russia" as well as developing Arabic resources.
