    Summary

    This is a two-part, four-week, online program with 45 instructional hours, designed for Korean language teachers from K-16 institutions. During the first week, participants will review language standards including the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. The second and third weeks' instruction will be focused on how to create digital teaching resources using educational technology. During the fourth week, participants will individually work on their online Korean teaching portfolios, which they submit at the end of the program. Upon completion of the program, participants will have a solid understanding of the standards; have developed a wealth of resources they can immediately implement in their classes; be ready to continue to create further resources using appropriate educational technology that incorporates the standards in their classroom; and have built a support network for continued growth as an effective Korean teacher. Upon successful completion of the program participants will receive a certificate for 45 hours of Professional Development Points through Boston University's School of Education.     Summary

    We will recruit 100 students in grades K - 12 from Springfield Public schools and neighboring communities to participate in our 2019 Startalk Chinese Summer Immersion Camp if funded.
    A team of 9 instructors and 9 teaching assistants will instruct campers over 15 schools days of 6 hours each for a total 90 instructional contact hours with the support of director, IL, administrative assistant, technology support specialist, and martial arts expert.
    A pre-program baseline assessment will be used to determine students' prior knowledge for the appropriate placement of students.
    While students in grades 6 - 12 will participate in the online LinguaFolio assessment system, a culminating student performance activity for ALL students will serve as a summative outcome indicating mastery of math content and skills, as well as knowledge of language and culture.

    Summary

    Our 2019 program theme is "Global New Jersey," in which we focus on using storytelling to develop global competence. We welcome up to 20 participants of a variety of language backgrounds and teaching experience for a two-week summer intensive program (90 hours) with academic year follow-up via our Language Roundtables (an additional 16 hours), for a total of 106 hours. We will support participants as they design lessons for a "Global New Jersey" theme, engage in micro-teaching, teach K-6 students in a local summer camp, and reflect upon those experiences. Participants will leave the program with the new knowledge, skills, and materials to use storytelling in their language teaching; teach a "Global New Jersey" unit designed to build global competence; and develop a long-term professional development plan. At the end of the program, they will belong to a year-long community of practice in which they can find support for their instruction and leadership development via a network of STARTALK-minded teachers.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Arabic summer program held at the University of Cincinnati is a 4-week intensive program (June 17 –July 12) designed for high school seniors, rising seniors and juniors at the beginning level of study. The number of students admitted to the program is 18. The program consists of 90 hours of instruction in addition to field trips. At the end of the program students will be able to perform at the Novice Mid/Novice High level according to the NCSSFL-ACTFL GLOBAL CAN-DO BENCHMARKS. Upon successful completion of the program students will earn high school credit according to the schools and five semester hours of college credit.
    Students are preparing for an end of program performance. They will present the festivities of a wedding ceremony.

    Summary

    “Han Style Tour: Let's go to Korea!” is Korean language program for 15 novices and 15 intermediates in grade 3-5. During this program, students will enjoy differentiated instruction under thematic unit focusing on Korean food, Hansik for 110 hours of instruction over a five-week period. Through this program, students advance their Korean language skills in 3 different modes while gaining knowledge about Korean food through project-based learning to create their own Korean dish collaboratively with their peers. Aligned to the World-Readiness Standards, instruction will be offered Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.. Students who participated in 2018 summer KSGL STARTALK program will be encouraged to join as a returning class (approximately 10 students) to learn about Korean traditional clothing, Hanbok.

    Summary

    Huayuan Chinese Academy’s “STARTALK STEM-Integrated Chinese Learning Program” will immerse 45 rising 2nd through 5th graders with no or little previous experience with Chinese in a Chinese language and culture environment for a total of 91 instructional hours over 3 weeks, June 24-July 12, 2019, followed by a 10-week fall Extension Program. The curriculum is constructed around the storyline of the fictional character Water Baby’s fun life, magic show, and adventures, with the STEM-based theme “Explore Water, an Essential Element of Life.” The curriculum integrates hands-on linguistic, cultural, and scientific activities, all designed based on the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. At the end of the program, students will be able to greet each other, exchange simple information about themselves and their family members, as well as topics related to three states of water, water cycle, and water pollution, and follow simple steps in Chinese for scientific experiments.

    Summary

    Yuva Hindi Sansthan, in partnership with North Penn School District, will conduct its seventh YHS STARTALK Hindi Language and Culture Program 2019, from June 24-July 12, to teach Hindi to 40 K-8 students during 105 instructional hours. We will develop three levels of curricula for two Novice and one Intermediate ranges of ACTFL proficiency guidelines under the overarching overarching theme, 'My virtual trip to India', divided into three sub-themes of 'things to see, do and eat' in the four destinations of North, South, East and West, of India. We will select an entirely new set of authentic audio-visual materials and develop related performance and literacy activities for our participants, many of whom are likely to be returning students. By end of the units Novice learners will be able to do basic tasks, such as, identifying characters and events and presenting in culturally appropriate manner while Intermediate students will pair and share, compare and contrast information with their own experiences and ideas in USA. Our students will virtually interact with their counterparts at Dr. Pillai Global Academy, an IB school in Mumbai, India, once a week to encourage partner work, create a sense of community and foster friendships and will be conducted to a day long field trip to connect with the community. A structured post-program follow up plan will be implemented to help students sustain and improve their skills.

    Exploring the Madina: a STARTALK Arabic Program

    Summary

    The Exploring the Madina STARTALK program engages students across communicative modes in intercultural contexts. These competencies are respectively honed in the social spheres of the home, university, coffeeshop, and marketplace classrooms; all of which comprise daily life in the madina ‘city’. Successful completers will be able to demonstrate level appropriate (ACTFL novice) proficiency, such as reading authentic simple ads and menus, and writing short autobiographies. They showcase proficiency at the end of the program by undergoing individual interviews based on Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) benchmarks, composing menus and performing unscripted skits in Arabic that are centered around the coffeehouse, a place that represents a unique social and cultural hub in Arabic speaking societies. Approximately 20 students with little knowledge of Arabic reach the novice level over the course of 4 weeks (95 instruction hours).

    Summary

    We typically receive upwards of 100 or 150 student requests for every StarTalk program due to our regular year long weekend Urdu classes, and Indus Arts Council's promotion of Pakistani arts, culture and languages in Houston and beyond.
    We have settled on a target number of 50 students as a reasonable goal, given our desire is to have a large enough program to demonstrate that there is a significant demand for Urdu in our area and formally pursuing Urdu instruction collectively is a worthwhile and attainable goal.
    The proficiency level for our students is Novice mid to Intermediate low. The program is 3 weeks long with 90 instructional hours.
    Currently with four instructors and four junior instructors, we will be able to offer four sections of Urdu instruction in which the average class size will be 12 to 13 students and the teacher-to student ratio (including junior instructors, who will be actively involved in instruction) will be approximately 1 to 6.
    This class size will offer students a quality learning experience and the potential to develop a sense of community and belonging with their peers. Participants will also take part in theater (performed in Urdu) and take part in music/songs in Urdu to a live audience.

    Summary

    This program will offer a three-week long beginning-level, nonresidential Chinese summer camp in July 2019 to 3rd to 5th graders (ages 10-12) in the Central Maine community. From 9:00AM to 3:00PM each day, student participants will learn basic Chinese through an art-based, culture-rich experience. Through a 90-hours long immersion experience in Chinese language and art otherwise unavailable to them, they will gain an initial understanding of the Chinese language, art, and culture; they will learn to use basic Chinese to communicate both personal information and traditional stories from Chinese culture.
