    Summary

    “Lifting the Veil of Ignorance: Education for All in India and Pakistan” serves as the theme for Kean’s 2018 Building Competency in Hindi and Urdu through Global Project-Based Learning Program. This program is designed for secondary/early post-secondary heritage language learners who wish to gain higher levels of language/culture proficiency in contemporary learning environments through the study of Hindi/Urdu in the real world context of the challenges posed in educating “all” children in India/Pakistan. The program will enroll 30 students in a three-week standards-driven blended learning experience totaling 99-instructional hours. Student outcomes include: demonstration of growth in interpretive reading, presentational writing and presentational speaking, increased linguistic accuracy and use of appropriate verbal and non-verbal strategies in interpersonal and presentational communication, and development of intercultural and global competencies through daily interactions with students from partner schools in India and Pakistan focused on gaining knowledge about and taking action on education equity as a local,regional and global issue.

    Summary

    The 2018 Kean Teacher Program is designed for heritage, native or non-native speakers of Hindi or Urdu that have 2 or more years experience teaching in heritage language schools, in STARTALK Programs and/or have previously attended NYU STARTALK Teacher Training Programs. The blended learning program will enroll 7 Hindi and 6 Urdu teachers in credit-bearing graduate coursework leading to a Master’s Degree in Hindi and Urdu Language Pedagogy. Teachers in the first MA cohort will pursue 4.5 credit hours of onsite pedagogy coursework while concurrently engaging in clinical observation and practice during the Kean Student Hindi and Urdu Summer Program and teachers in the second cohort will pursue 9-credit hours of content, theory and pedagogy online coursework as part of the Extended Teacher Program. Program outcomes include: acquisition of pedagogical knowledge and skills (contemporary, research-based instructional methods and assessment practices) through summer onsite courses that include integration of content, theory and pedagogy into clinical practice in the Student Program and acquisition of content (language, literature and linguistics) through extended online courses. Credits earned in graduate courses may be used to fulfill licensure requirements or to pursue Alternate Route Certification Programs offered in most states.

    The three-week summer program will provide 50 middle school students (i.e. rising 6th through 8th graders) with Chinese and Arabic instruction at Novice Low and Novice Mid levels for 4.5 hours a day for 15 days (i.e. 67.5 total hours of instruction) from July 9 to July 27. Teachers will have more than 30 hours of pre-service training, plus one half-hour before class each day to prepare their materials and consult with one another, and one hour after class to reflect on their teaching practice and review the day's work, including weekly work in the computer lab analyzing their students' progress in providing evidence for LinguaFolio CAN DO statements. Teacher assistants will be included in part of the pre-service week, working with teachers to prepare activities and materials, and will work in-class to help students. Outcomes include students' self-assessment as CAN DO or CAN DO WITH HELP on at least seven pre-identified LinguaFolio indicators embedded in the curriculum covering major language domains.

    32 rising high school 10-12 graders and college freshmen and sophomores will participate in Lewis University Summer Star Talk 2018. By the end of the Program, students are expected to develop interest in TL and culture and to reach basic (Novice High /Intermediate Low) functional ability in Chinese/Russian. The program will run for four weeks from June 18th and July 13th 2018, Monday through Friday and will provide 90 hours of instruction.

    ABC Houston STARTALK Student Program aims to raise the awareness of and stimulate students’ interest in learning Chinese language and culture. The program will collaborate with Neff Elementary School and offer 5 classes. We will recruit 60 elementary students ranging from 1st to 5th graders. The Program lasts four weeks in June, providing 96 hours of exciting and rigorous language and culture instruction. Students will be led to explore the richness of Chinese culture through various activities in an interactive learning environment.

    Summary

    This blended 96 hour camp (total 18 days program with 12 days face to face and six days of pre-camp online segment) with two weekend breaks will target 75 middle and high school students and will be based on five C’s to help students in developing proficiency in three modes of communication. Lesson plans will be developed keeping main focus on culture besides the target language and will be posted on www.balvihar.org for Startalk reference and community. The program will be centered on learners and full attention will be paid to individual needs. Best practices in instruction and assessment will be implemented. We will use differentiating tasks to address different levels (novice, intermediate and advance) of proficiency in aural and literacy skills.

    The Indus Arts Council Urdu STARTALK Program will offer another exciting 15 days hands-on learning opportunity to 50 local upper elementary and middle school students to improve their Urdu language skills and their familiarity with Urdu culture. and their familiarity with Urdu culture. 2. Instructional hours will be between 9:00AM and 3:00PM 3. We strive to provide total immersive and conducive environment inside and outside the class to make learning fun and engaging. 4. Students will improve their proficiency in Urdu language and culture through an engaging curriculum that integrates age-appropriate content goals with language learning and cultural goals. 5.     The STARTALK- A Trip to the Arab World Arabic summer program held at the First Presbyterian Church of El Paso is a three-week immersion program (June 11 –June 29) designed for elementary students, rising 3rd to 5th graders. The number of students enrolled is 36 divided into two classes Arabic I and one class Arabic II. The program consists of 105 hours of instruction. At the end of the program students will be able to perform at the Novice Low/Mid level according to the NCSSFL-ACTFL Global Can-Do Benchmarks.

    Summary

    The four-credit graduate-level course, entitled “Second Language and Immersion Methodologies for STARTALK Teachers of Critical Languages,” is a 10-day residential program hosted by Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota, and takes place on the campus of Bemidji State University (BSU).
    The course consists of 80 instructional hours, not including informal discussions and personal reflection, and focuses on key concepts of immersion education and active participation in all aspects of language and culture programming at the Language Villages. STARTALK teachers learn and practice: a) strategies for staying in the target language in both formal and informal instructional settings; b) formative and summative Standards-based assessments of students’ communication skills and cultural understandings; c) content-based teaching strategies, with emphasis on the environment, drama and music; d) integrating culture into the teaching of language; and e) meeting the needs of diverse learners. A perennial highlight of our program is several visits to our youth Language Villages in session at that time, where participants observe class concepts put into practice.

    Participants receive tuition, room & board, four units of graduate credit from Concordia College and up to $500 of travel-expense reimbursement, all for free, thanks to the STARTALK grant.

    Summary

    Yuva Hindi Sansthan, in partnership with North PennSchool District, proposes its sixth YHS STARTALK Hindi Language and Culture Program 2018 from June 18-July 6 to teach Hindi to 40 K-8 students of ages 8 to 13. We will develop three levels of curricula for two Novice and one Intermediate ranges of ACTFL proficiency guidelines under the overarching overarching theme, 'My virtual trip to India', divided into three sub-themes, 'food, festival and places of various regions of India' to provide information in chunks and recycle them. By end of the units Novice level learners will be able to do basic tasks, such as, identifying characters and events and presenting in culturally appropriate manner while Intermediate students will pair and share, compare and contrast information with their own experiences and ideas in USA. Our instructors will receive program specific professional development training under the guidance of a pedagogy expert and a K-8 literacy expert in the pre-program period. A structured post-program follow up plan will be implemented to help students sustain and improve their skills.
