    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Summer Bridging Academies in Portland offer a three-week intensive language and culture learning experience for 100 K-5 students of Chinese and 40 K-5 students of Russian who are currently enrolled in Portland Public Schools’ Dual Language Immersion programs, will be entering grade K, or plan late entry into a program in Fall 2019. The Academies provide 48 hours of instruction based on the theme of “Bridging Cultures through Cuisine.” Student outcomes target a one proficiency sublevel gain, from Novice to Intermediate and, for struggling students, a boost going into the school year. As part of a combined STARTALK program that additionally offers a Teacher Academy, students will be exposed to a curriculum infused by the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching and Learning and help solidify Portland Public Schools contribution to a pipeline of students enrolled in the study of critical languages.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Summer Bridging Academy for Teachers coupled with the STARTALK K-5 Bridging Academy in Portland offers total of 35 K-5 Chinese and Russian dual language immersion teachers and aspiring educators the ideal opportunity to bridge pedagogical theory, best practices and real world application. Over 60 hours of training, reflection and evaluation and 72 hours of actual integrated content and language instruction, participants gain critical professional knowledge and skills in immersion pedagogy while collectively building a professional culture of continuous improvement anchored in a data driven learning cycle. Current teachers can earn continuing education credits toward licensure renewal. Dual Language Teacher Residents enrolled in a Portland Public Schools and Oregon State University collaborative alternative licensure program (Portland Dual Language Teacher Residents) gain significant experience and training as part of their required course work towards full licensure and a masters degree. Aspiring Educators, highly bilingual high school and college students, also receive an invaluable opportunity to be mentored and develop skills and knowledge about working with children.

    The 2019 STARTALK STEAM-Infused Intensive Chinese Summer Program for 30 high school and college students in the Triad Piedmont areas of North Carolina, providing national standards-based language and culture instruction, preparing the young generation with essential and critical language skills in the 21st century for an ever-changing world. It offers intensive Chinese language learning opportunities for literacy learning and cultural understanding.

    No prior Chinese language experience is necessary. The program is FREE for qualified candidates with a $50 application fee.

    Assessment is critical to language teaching, and proficiency-based assessment can have positive influences on curriculum planning and implementation. The ACTFL MOPI workshop provides an opportunity for instructors to learn how to assess their students' oral proficiency and reflect on realistic outcomes for their students.     This program will enroll 20 participants who teach in higher education, with a variety of language teaching experiences and backgrounds. Participants will learn about the ACTFL Guidelines and how to apply these for goal-setting, assessment and self-assessment to improve teaching and learning, The first part of the workshop is an online course that provides a background on the ACTFL Guidelines and ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview. The second part is a face-to-face workshop on the ACTFL OPI and a focus on classroom applications. The third part involves regular follow-up with participants during Fall 2019 and Winter 2020 on the influences of the workshop on teaching, learning and assessment.

    Participants will accrue approximately 35 hours, including up to 10-14 pre-session hours, 21 hours during the face-to-face workshop and 4-6 hours in completing the surveys and follow on interviews.

    Summary

    The 13-day Chinese and Turkish programs with a total of 91 hours instruction in Chinese or 91 hours instruction in Turkish will allow 24 middle school and high school students (grades 6-12) who have limited or no previous experience in Chinese to attain novice-mid proficiency in Chinese and 10 high school juniors and seniors (grades 11-12) along with college freshmen and sophomores who have limited or no previous experience in Turkish to attain novice-mid proficiency in Turkish. During each 7-hour day, students will engage in immersive language learning, practicing Martial Arts or Taekwondo, drumming, and music. The theme “A Musical Journey through China, a Musical Journey through Turkey” will provide ample opportunities for communication about food, geography, families, music, and basic greetings and introductions; learning about the cultures and content of the Chinese/Turkish traditions, music and sports; connecting to art and history. A field trip to the Atlanta Chinatown or the local Turkish cultural center will provide a rich exchange of activities with native speakers and an authentic opportunity for interpersonal communication. By the end of the program, students will reach "novice-mid" in all modes of communication based on the ACTFL proficiency guidelines and will be able to handle many authentic tasks, including telling and asking about basic personal information, commenting on their favorite Chinese or Turkish food, cities and musical instruments, designing itineraries, and performing skits and songs in Chinese or Turkish.

    Summary

    Our Startalk program offers a free five-week Chinese summer intensive non-residential program for highly motivated college-bound high school students with no prior or little background in Chinese. Our program will accept 24 to 30 students. By the end of the program, we expect students to reach Novice Mid to Novice High on the ACTFL OPI scale. Our program will have a total of 80 hours of instruction, guided homework, cultural activities Monday to Thursday from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and extracurricular activities on some Fridays. Our program theme “Our Identities, Our Heroes” allows students to learn Mandarin in a standards-based curriculum with relevance to their future identities and is designed using authentic materials to improve students’ communication skills significantly by providing a linguistically and culturally enriched learning environment.

    Summary

    STARTALK 2019 - Personal and Professional Connections in Russian, a second-year Russian four-week summer program, will be held June 24 – July 18, 2019 at the United States Naval Academy (USNA) and will focus on developing and expanding communicative competence and cultural awareness in midshipmen at USNA and students from nearby Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) and other local schools. The program will meet for 7 hours per day for 20 days (a total of 140 instructional hours) and will offer four weeks of intensive Russian instruction at the Novice-High to Intermediate-Low level. There will be 20 student participants who will have completed two semesters of Russian. They will work on developing their Russian for future professional and personal development. The outcomes of the program are successful completion of the course and continued pursuit of formal and informal study of Russian.

    Francis Lewis High School is excited to announce K-talk! Seoul to Soul, a dynamic STARTALK Korean Language Summer Program designed to immerse students in the rich culture and language of Korea through 21st century teaching and learning. Via Google, the program will engage students in a virtual exploration of Seoul, Korea enriched by real-world experiences in:

    • Korean arts and crafts
    • K-pop/music
    • traditional and modern dance
    • Tae Kwon Do

    Success will be highlighted through:

    • E-portfolios
    • student-created blogs
    • interactive exhibitions

    To promote a continuing appreciation for the Korean culture and on-going Korean language development, post-program activities include:

    • the 2020 Lunar New Year Celebration at the Korea Society of NYC

    The five-week intensive program is free and will be offered Monday-Thursday from
    8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., July 8, 2019 to August 8, 2019. Space is limited to 30 novice (beginner) participants in grades 6 through 8.

    If your son or daughter is interested in joining our program, please have him/her go to our school website at francislewishs.org and click on the K-talk! Seoul to Soul icon in the announcement section to complete the online form by June 7, 2019. Completion of the form does not guarantee acceptance into the program as seating is limited. Students will be notified of acceptance to the program via email.

    Summary

    The purpose of the CAIS STARTALK Elementary Immersion Program is to provide continuity for retention, enhanced learning, and reinforcement of Chinese language and culture skills to a constituency of San Francisco Unified School District and student who are studying in similar immersion models that would otherwise not be able to access such an opportunity. As a result of participating in the summer program, students will be confident of their language capabilities and enjoy learning about Chinese culture in a fun environment. Students who have been identified as struggling during the school year have the chance to reinforce their learning. We are targeting twelve students per grade, 1st to 5th grade inclusive for two three week sessions for a total of one hundred fifty students and two hundred and ten instructional hours.

    Summary

    The CAIS STARTALK K-8 Chinese Teacher Training Program will provide twelve teacher participants with the fundamentals for instruction in a Chinese language classroom. This intensive one week training for teachers will facilitate high quality Chinese language programming in their schools. Teacher participants will learn the critical skills they need to be innovative and successful in the classroom during the forty hours of instructional time which have a focus of in class practicums built into the program design. They will build and evaluate curriculum, integrate culture into their language program, develop performance based assessments, and access authentic teaching tools and resources. Through hands-on classroom teaching, participants will interact with real students studying Chinese in CAIS student program.
