    The University of Iowa (UI) proposes to offer a four-week summer intensive Chinese program for Iowa high school students with zero or little background in the Chinese language to receive three college credit. We expect to enroll 26 senior high school students from the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) and Cedar Rapids Community School District (CRSD), as well as other areas of Iowa State. This is a day-class program with a residential component for students from farther away, and it includes 114 class contact hours plus extra-curricular activities. By the end of the program, students are expected to reach ACTFL Novice Mid to High level proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The major curricular goals for the proposed program are to have students learn the language, develop language competencies, and experience Chinese education, culture, customs, and history through a theme-based virtual environment, communicative-based teaching methods, hand-on activities, culture workshops, contextualized performance, and field trips.

    Summary

    This program is a 3-week intensive summer training and practicum program during July 5-25, 2017 for current and future K-12 Chinese language teachers (no classes on weekends).

    The targeted participants are prospective and novice (0-2 years of teaching experience) Chinese teachers from public/private K-12 schools, teacher colleges or graduate programs, and heritage/community schools.

    Aligned with ACTFL standards and STARTALK principles, the primary goal of the program is to equip teachers with teaching skills and strategies that will enable them to teach Chinese with at least 90% use of target language. The program also includes important sessions on national standards, backward-design curriculum development, performance-based assessment and teaching technology.

    The program features:
    • Certificate of 100 professional development credit hours;
    • 3 graduate credits (optional) from Bryant University with tuition discount;
    • Lectures and seminars by renowned scholars and experts;
    • Workshops by experienced teachers to share teaching strategies and classroom activities;
    • Real practice classes with middle and high school students;
    • Coaching on lesson plan and instruction by lead instructor;
    • Team teaching and evaluation;

    Summary

    Mississippi Chinese StarTalk 11 will offer four weeks of intensive residential instruction (20 days and 100 contact hours of instruction) to up to 30 high school students from Mississippi and other states who will learn the language in three different levels ranging from Novice Mid to Intermediate Mid. A team of three teachers, one program coordinator, three tutor-counselors and other staff members will oversee the program academically and culturally. During the course of this program, students will learn to appreciate the Chinese language by possessing it and communicating in it, while being immersed in nine communication tasks in both spoken and written Chinese.

    The target audience for the 75-hour long, four-week online and two-day on-site blended Portuguese Teacher Training program (PTT) is fifteen K-16 teachers of Portuguese with a minimum of one-year of teaching experience. They need not to have any background in Portuguese as a pluricentric language or intercultural communicative competence, but ideally should strive to deliver student-centered instruction and predominantly teach in the target language. The goal is to provide opportunities for teachers of Portuguese to integrate research-based best practices into their language teaching, learn to reflect critically on their own performance, engage collaboratively with colleagues to develop effective teaching strategies, and to recognize, analyze and compare different cultural practices from the Portuguese-speaking world. As the program addresses pluricentrism it also trains teachers to facilitate their students’ acquisition of intercultural communicative competence.

    Summary

    "What Do You Know about Traditional Chinese Medicine?" will be the theme of our 2017 three-week, 120 hours, student’s Chinese program for forty-two (42) grades 4-12 learners in northern New England with learners' proficiency from novice-low to intermediate-mid at Husson University, Bangor, Maine. For the summer 2017, the Bangor Chinese School will continue to provide both new and tested teaching strategies and student learning experiences. Students will gain the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in a learning environment featuring language "immersion". BCS now offers to provide a year-nine of instruction and learning experience in which students will take part in standards-based, student-centered language and culture immersion, thematic organized learning with target language and advanced educational technology. The goal of the learning process is to move each student 1-2 proficiency levels up by the end of the program. It is also the intention of BCS to expand learning experiences for students outside the classroom, including opportunities for students to communicate with Chinese counterparts/friends through the Internet, including, Skype and WeChat which has been done very successfully in the past eight (8) years. All master teachers of student program are required to participate in the BCS STARTALK teacher program to ensure the teaching quality of the student program. It is hoped that following the program the participants and their families will be motivated to continue pursuing on-going language-speaking and cultural opportunities to enrich their own knowledge, and promote the ancient and rich Chinese heritage, allowing better understanding and effective diplomacy with that area of the world, be prepared to be able to compete for global jobs, manage multicultural colleagues and collaborate on global teams. Simply stated, if we are to face the challenges of the future with confidence, we must start now, using ACTFL standards and STARTALK principles, in building a cadre of young Americans who comprehend, speak and read this lovely, ancient and "critical" world language.

    Summary

    The BYU Arabic STARTALK Camp is designed to light the fire of motivation in students as they experience that they can learn a lot of Arabic in just three weeks. Our theme, “Avicenna’s Astrolabe,” centers on a collaborative mystery-solving game set in the present. Students are tasked to find an ancient cure to a deadly disease that threatens to decimate the modern world. The key to doing so is an astrolabe once held by the famous polymath, Ibn Sina (a.k.a. Avicenna). By exploring cities and talking to people from both the modern and medieval Arab world, students uncover the story of the astrolabe as it passed hands from civilization to civilization, while also finding clues leading them on to discover the cure they seek. In the process, students internalize basic communication skills while also experiencing a variety of Arab cultures and historical perspectives that highlight the impact of Arabo-Islamic civilization on the West. They will also learn about past and present violent reactionary movements in the East and the West that manipulate religion to foment hate and gain power.

    Beginners get off to a great start and complete the equivalent of a year of high school Arabic and receive corresponding credit. We will again offer an option that will allow those who already know the script to complete the equivalent of Arabic 101 and receive either high school or university credit. Even more advanced students may complete Arabic 102 and receive high school or university credit. All will come away with a solid repertoire of pragmatic speaking and reading skills and gain significant hands-on experience with Arab culture.

    Students learn through doing. They live the language, learning to perform authentic tasks. They are immersed in music, films, games, cooking lessons, visits to mosques and restaurants. Tutors are available day and night to act as role models and to help students of varying abilities and challenges succeed. World-class teachers are experienced in making learning fun and adjusting instruction to individual needs. Students practice and demonstrate their progress in role plays and in day-to-day living, which helps to build confidence.

    All students are urged to push on during the academic year with our award-winning distance-learning course that includes live support from tutors. Some former students who have done so have already distinguished themselves in follow-on abroad experience and realized the goal of acquiring advanced levels of proficiency in Arabic. BYU’s Arabic camp is a great springboard. Consider the example of Rachel Lott, who participated in our 2014 camp and will be joining us this year as a teaching assistant:

    STARTALK 2017 in comparisons to our previous programs, will put greater emphasis on the use of mobile technology in education. Our outcomes will be: (1) the creation of innovative learning materials based on contemporary methodology, such as serial lectures for students of Russian based 21st Century curriculum topics; (2) use of technological tools and mobile devices, such as iPads and tablets, in a learner-centered classroom and for distance learning; (3) the creation of technology-mediated Learning Objects to be added to our virtual library of Learning Objects. We plan to accept 16 participants who are teachers of Russian at K-16 level this year with 120 instructional hours. The duration of program will be 5 weeks.

    This program provides two two-week sessions for up to 15 total teachers to learn to deliver instruction and assess student learning in a standards-based instructional program at the K-12 level. The classes are five days a week, six hours a day (84 total hours of direct instruction), and also include a Modified Oral Proficiency Interview (MOPI) or Integrated Performance Assessment two-day training workshop during the middle weekend. The outcomes of the program will be found in an e-portfolio and include: a micro-teaching lesson in the co-located student program, a reflective journal on participants’ learning and classroom observations, a final paper containing an assessment of student learning and trainees’ teaching, and an understanding of the importance of “backward design” and how it leads to better learning for students. These outcomes help to increase the sustainability of these educators in the classroom during regular year/academic year programs; the skills and knowledge that they gain in this program are directly transferred to the co-located student program and also to their teaching during the academic year. Many teachers return to the program as a way of continuing their professional development because every year we differentiate the courses according to the expressed needs and wishes of our participants.

    CHS STARTALK will provide an innovative learning environment for a limited number of Chinese teacher-trainees from Sunday, June 25 to Friday, July 7 (residential) and Monday, July 10 to Friday, July 28, 2017 (online). Lodging and meals are included.
    The program will emphasize the TELL domains of Learning Experiences, Planning, and Collaboration, linking these focus areas to STARTALK-endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching and Learning and Characteristics of Effective Language Lessons. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a supervised practicum during Week 2 of the F2F.
    Late afternoon and evening activities are available through our partnership with Common Ground on the Hill (http://www.commongroundonthehill.org), which offers in-depth courses in art, dance, music, instruments, and discussion topics focused on promoting cross-cultural understanding, assisting participants to discover best practices to infuse culture in the language classroom (participants' family members are welcome to sign up for CGOTH separately).
    Teacher-trainees will also have the opportunity to earn up to six undergraduate or graduate credits in education, with additional responsibilities required.
