    Summary

    This online/on-site program emphasizes classroom teaching strategies and basic principles that can be applied to a variety of classroom settings. Participants learn to implement the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, develop student-centered lessons with backwards design appropriate to student proficiency, background and needs, use the target language and authentic materials in real-life scenarios. 20 Hindi and Urdu teachers participate. Preference is given to applicants with some teaching experience and native or near-native language proficiency without previous or with limited formal training. Training is conducted in both target languages and English and at the end teachers prepare a portfolio that demonstrates understanding of the principles of learning and teaching, including a standards-based lesson for micro- teaching, and at least one lesson plan or unit appropriate to the participant's teaching setting, two reflection/ journal entries (a micro- teaching experience and a final self-assessment essay), observation reports and a final project. Through an online component participants engage in reading, video-observations, group- projects, postings and forum discussions, while on site, they design activities in groups and individually, and team-teach beginning level students. The program is 70 hours delivered over four weeks – two weeks of online instruction, one week on site (8 full days Saturday-Saturday) and one more week online.

    This blended STARTALK program consists of a pre-institute (10 days) asynchronous online module and a residential summer institute (8 days) for 20 secondary Chinese language teachers, totaling 65 contact hours. The primary focus of the program is developing professional and program sustainability through the incorporation of effective and engaging learner-centered educational technology. Most travel expenses and all meals and dormitory lodging are covered by the program. Optional 3 graduate credit hours in Teacher Education are available at the participant's expense.

    The Mandarin Chinese and Russian Student Academy is a four-week residential immersion program in the summer at Kent State’s main campus. Housed in the university's state-of-the-art Honors College, the Mandarin Chinese and Russian Academy will serve two cohorts of 10 new learners of Mandarin Chinese and Russian, targeting rising high school juniors and seniors. The program offers 235 instructional hours over four weeks in the summer and involves a mandatory academic year follow-up component. Proficiency-based outcomes assessment and tracking of graduates will measure the success of the program in fostering success and persistence in the study of the Mandarin Chinese and Russian language.

    The MSCTA begins with one-week online training (July 2- 6), followed by 3-week onsite training and practicum at the Western Michigan University (WMU) (July 9-27) and one-week online practicum (July 30-August 3). The MSCTA program aims to recruit five experienced Chinese teachers (more than 3-years teaching experience) and ten prospective and novice (0-2 years of teaching experience) Chinese teachers from public/private K-12 schools, colleges, graduate programs, and heritage/community schools. At the end of the program, participants will be able to plan student learning experiences based on local curriculum and state and national standards, frequently check for understanding in a variety of ways throughout the lesson, engage in self-assessment and peer review to monitor progress toward the targeted performance objectives and their own language and culture goals and use processes that allow them to analyze and reflect on their current teaching practices. In-service Chinese teachers will be awarded up to 100 professional development SCECHs hours upon completion of the summer program. The program also offers 3 to 6 credits for the graduate level course on Teaching Chinese As a Second Language offered by the College of Education and Human Development at WMU. Teacher participants who are interested in obtaining credits will pay tuition and associated fee at their own expense. Participants who are registered for graduate credits will be given $596.25 as a scholarship. Those who do not need to obtain credits will not need to pay any program fee. Thus, in conjunction with WMU’s Teacher Certification Program, after the program, the participants will have three pathways that lead to certification i.e., add a minor endorsement (20 credit hours) in their initial teaching certificate, the initial Graduate Teaching Chinese Certificate program (26 credit hours) or the master program (33 credit hours). The application deadline is April 25, 2018, and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

    Appalachian State University (App State), located in Boone, North Carolina, offers a three-week, residential, intensive student program from July 9 to July 27, 2018. The culturally rich and academically rigorous Chinese program is designed for 18 rising 9th-12th-grade students with limited or no previous exposure to Chinese from the high schools in the High Country of North Carolina. Focusing on the theme of “The High Country Meets the Middle Kingdom,” the program will offer a total of 235 contact hours in structured language learning.     The BYU Arabic STARTALK Camp is designed to light the fire of motivation in students as they experience that they can learn a lot of Arabic language and culture in just three weeks. Our theme, “Avicenna’s Astrolabe,” centers on a collaborative mystery-solving game set in the present. Students are tasked to find an ancient cure to a deadly disease that threatens to decimate the modern world. The key to doing so is an astrolabe once held by the famous polymath, Ibn Sina (a.k.a. Avicenna). By exploring cities and talking to people from both the modern and medieval Arab world, students uncover the story of the astrolabe as it passed hands from civilization to civilization, while also finding clues leading them on to discover the cure they seek. In the process, students will internalize basic communication skills while also experiencing a variety of Arab cultures and historical perspectives that highlight the impact of Arabo-Islamic civilization on the West. They will also learn about past and present violent reactionary movements in the East and the West that manipulate religion to foment hate and gain power. Beginners get off to a great start and are well on their way to completing the equivalent of a year of high school Arabic (they receive credit for one semester and may complete the second online). We will again offer an option that will allow those who already know the Arabic script to complete a year of high school credit. Even more advanced students may receive credit for second-year high school Arabic. All will come away with a solid repertoire of pragmatic speaking and reading skills and gain significant hands-on experience with Arab culture. Students learn through doing. They live the language, learning to perform authentic tasks. They are immersed in music, films, games, cooking lessons, and visit a mosque and restaurant. Tutors are available day and night to act as role models and to help students of varying abilities and challenges succeed. World-class teachers are experienced in making learning fun and adjusting instruction to individual needs. Students practice and demonstrate their progress in role plays and in day-to-day living, which helps to build confidence. All students are urged to push on during the academic year with our award-winning distance-learning course that includes live support from tutors. Some former students who have done so have already distinguished themselves in follow-on abroad experience and realized the goal of acquiring advanced levels of proficiency in Arabic.     • The STARTALK-CHELER Chinese Leadership Program is designed to expand the conceptual understanding and practical teaching skills of experienced K-12 teacher leaders of community-based Chinese heritage schools/programs. The blended residential teacher program includes a one-month online session, an eight-day workshop on the main campus at the University of Toledo, and a semester-long online forum, with approximately 88 hours of instruction. The instruction and learning experiences will be differentiated for new and returning STARTALK participants. Teacher participants will collaborate in small groups to develop a Standards-based age-appropriate unit and student learning plans using backward design planning and STARTALK Endorsed Principles and to conduct micro-teachings to volunteer Chinese heritage speakers. The goals of the 2018 Program are to enhance the knowledge and skills of 18 participants by developing pedagogically-sound learning plans with technology and teaching practices focusing on the literacy development of Chinese heritage speakers and differentiated instruction (returning STARTALK participants particularly).

    ​This three-week hybrid teacher training program will prepare sixteen new and returning secondary and post-secondary teachers of Arabic, Chinese, Dari, and Persian with the knowledge and practicum opportunities to design and deliver curricula and lessons based on backward design and STARTALK-endorsed principles for effective teaching and learning. An additional core focus will be on thematically organized performance-based units of instruction in a learner-centered classroom. Successful teachers will earn three units of graduate level college credit. Interested participants will attend an additional 40 hours of continuing teacher education offered by CWLP-SAILN on-site or online, and will become fellows of CWLP upon the final training. The participants will also learn about the steps that are involved in becoming a credentialed teacher in the state of California.

    Traditional Chinese Medicine will be the theme of our 2018 three-week, 120 hours program for forty-two (42) grades 4-12 learners in northern New England with learners' proficiency from novice-low to intermediate-high at Husson University, Bangor, Maine. For the summer 2018, the Bangor Chinese School will continue to provide both new and tested teaching strategies and student learning experiences. Students will gain the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in a learning environment featuring language "immersion". BCS now offers to provide a year-ten of instruction and learning experience in which students will take part in standards-based, student-centered language and culture immersion, thematic organized learning with target language and advanced educational technology. The goal of the learning process is to move each student’s proficiency levels up by the end of the program. It is also the intention of BCS to expand learning experiences for students outside the classroom, including opportunities for students to communicate with Chinese counterparts/friends through the Internet, including, Skype and WeChat which has been done very successfully in the past nine years. All master teachers of student program are required to participate in the BCS’s STARTALK teacher program to ensure the teaching quality of the student program. It is hoped that following the program the participants and their families will be motivated to continue pursuing on-going language-speaking and cultural opportunities to enrich their own knowledge, and promote the ancient and rich Chinese heritage, allowing better understanding and effective diplomacy with that area of the world, be prepared to be able to compete for global jobs, manage multicultural colleagues and collaborate on global teams. Simply stated, if we are to face the challenges of the future with confidence, we must start now, using ACTFL standards and STARTALK principles, in building a cadre of young Americans who comprehend, speak and read this lovely, ancient and "critical" world language.
