    Summary

    The two primary outcomes for the proposed project are a positive learning experience for approximately 100 Portuguese heritage students in grades 1-8 ranging in language ability from novice to intermediate, along with a professional development experience for 15 Portuguese language and culture educators that will increase their language and cultural knowledge as well as their pedagogical content knowledge to successfully implement standards-based language instruction in their classrooms. The students will participate in approximately 75 hours of instruction in a three-week program that will be incorporated into the Hilmar Unified School District's summer school program.

    Summary

    STARTALK: MOSAAIC – Multilingual Opportunities for Students in Arabic Arts, Innovation, and Culture, establishes a four-week, 120-hour summer intensive language learning program for K-8 students in Patterson, CA to acquire mid to high novice levels of Arabic language and cultural competence through the arts and cultures of Arabic-speaking communities. The program offers students daily opportunities every day to use their emerging Arabic language capacities to create culturally responsive art and to communicate in culturally and linguistically authentic and meaningful ways. Largely project-based, MOSAAIC guides students in developing technical language and acquiring skill in using the tools of their chosen arts disciplines. MOSAAIC classroom staff are well-known professionals in their arts area of focus, thereby ensuring a level of rigor and credibility for the program. The program will also support 75 hours of staff professional collaboration, learning and reflection to create the target classroom learning plans, plan student and family activities, and enhance their language teaching and arts integration skills.

    Summary

    This 20-day, 80-instructional-hour summer program aims to increase the awareness and interest in Chinese and Korean languages and cultures among the community. The program will also serve as a springboard for the establishment of two-way immersion programs in collaboration with the school district in the next few years. A total of 45 second and third grade non-heritage language learners with no prior experience in Chinese or Korean will be recruited: 30 for the Chinese program and 15 for the Korean program. By the end of the summer program, students are expected to achieve a novice-low level of reading and writing and a novice-mid level of listening and speaking in the target language. They are also expected to develop a sustained interest in the target languages and cultures, continuing their learning in the online program from July to August and in the after-school programs during the academic year.

    Summary

    The Washington County School District (WCSD) Chinese Summer Camp is an opportunity for 40 rising 6th and 7th graders from eight WCSD schools to join together for an intensive linguistic and cultural experience. The program will include 2 classrooms of 20 students each meeting daily for 60 hours, 6 hours per day, and online for an additional 30 hours exploring Beijing and Beyond where students will explore peer experiences in major cities in China. WCSD students will engage with students from China, via electronic communication, as topics are explored and activities include group presentations and informative oral and written assignments. After participating in the camp, students will be able to engage in Intermediate Mid discourse regarding life of a teen in China through the sub-themes of social economic diversity, cultural awareness, and environmental protection.

    Summary

    The purpose of the CAIS STARTALK Elementary Immersion Program is to provide continuity for retention, enhanced learning, and reinforcement of Chinese language and culture skills to a constituency of San Francisco Unified School District and student who are studying in similar immersion models that would otherwise not be able to access such an opportunity. As a result of participating in the summer program, students will be confident of their language capabilities and enjoy learning about Chinese culture in a fun environment. Students who have been identified as struggling during the school year have the chance to
    reinforce their learning. We are targeting twelve students per grade, 1st to 5th grade inclusive for two three week sessions for a total of one hundred fifty students and two hundred and ten instructional hours.

    Summary

    This program is a four-week intensive program that is designed to move students forward in their Chinese language proficiency development. It incorporates learners from grades 1-12 from the Novice to the Intermediate-low levels. In grades 1-6, the students experience a content-related FLES program that introduces them to Chinese language and culture. In grades 7-12, students are placed according to their previous learning experience in level 1-4 classes. There will be approximately five students at the elementary level and twenty at the middle/high school levels for a total of 51 instructional hours for elementary and 102 hours for secondary students. The program will run from June 27-July 20, 2018.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Summer Bridging Academies in Portland offer a three-week intensive language and culture learning experience for 75 K-5 students of Chinese and 38 K-5 students of Russian who are currently enrolled in Portland Public Schools’ Dual Language Immersion programs, will be entering grade K, or plan late entry into a program in fall 2017. The Academies provide 90 hours of instruction based on the theme of “Bridging Cultures through Cuisine.” Student outcomes target a one proficiency level gain, from Novice to Intermediate and, for struggling students, a boost going into the school year. As part of a combined STARTALK program that additionally offers a Teacher Academy, students will be exposed to a curriculum infused by the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching and Learning and help solidify Portland Public Schools contribution to a pipeline of students enrolled in the study of critical languages.

    Summary

    The program will offer 91 hours of learner centered Hindi language and culture learning to 84 early elementary to middle school students (1- 8 grade). Participants will be placed in age-appropriate classes ranging from novice to intermediate level, based on their pre-program informal Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) assessment. Program's major goals will be to develop Hindi language competence of all participants by at least one higher sub level in three modes of communication. Participants will have the opportunity to develop language skills, and cultural competence by exploring program's curriculum contents based on the theme 'Me and My World- Unity in Diversity', and World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. Differentiated instruction, intentional scaffolding to build Hindi literacy skills, formative and performance assessments will guide and motivate learners to self-monitor and grow their language skills. Theme based games, competitions, multimedia projects and hands-on native visual and performing arts projects will provide opportunities to all language learners with varied needs to engage in meaningful communication, create and present collaborative products for peer assessment and self reflection. The program will also provide continued Hindi language and culture learning opportunity to learners during its 20 week online-blended session (September 2018- March 2019).

    ABC Houston STARTALK Student Program aims to raise the awareness of and stimulate students’ interest in learning Chinese language and culture. The program will collaborate with Neff Elementary School and offer 5 classes. We will recruit 60 elementary students ranging from 1st to 5th graders. The Program lasts four weeks in June, providing 96 hours of exciting and rigorous language and culture instruction. Students will be led to explore the richness of Chinese culture through various activities in an interactive learning environment.

    The Indus Arts Council Urdu STARTALK Program will offer another exciting 15 days hands-on learning opportunity to 50 local upper elementary and middle school students to improve their Urdu language skills and their familiarity with Urdu culture. and their familiarity with Urdu culture. 2. Instructional hours will be between 9:00AM and 3:00PM 3. We strive to provide total immersive and conducive environment inside and outside the class to make learning fun and engaging. 4. Students will improve their proficiency in Urdu language and culture through an engaging curriculum that integrates age-appropriate content goals with language learning and cultural goals. 5. The program will also strengthen students’ ties with the local Urdu- speaking community and it will help promote the study of and awareness of Urdu and its culture in the Houston area.
