    STARTALK 2019 - Personal and Professional Connections in Russian, a second-year Russian four-week summer program, will be held June 24 – July 18, 2019 at the United States Naval Academy (USNA) and will focus on developing and expanding communicative competence and cultural awareness in midshipmen at USNA and students from nearby Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) and other local schools. The program will meet for 7 hours per day for 20 days (a total of 140 instructional hours) and will offer four weeks of intensive Russian instruction at the Novice-High to Intermediate-Low level. There will be 20 student participants who will have completed two semesters of Russian. They will work on developing their Russian for future professional and personal development. The outcomes of the program are successful completion of the course and continued pursuit of formal and informal study of Russian.

    Summary

    Discover Russian is a four-week introductory course in Russian language and culture that will be offered by American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) to 30 rising 6th-12th graders at TJHSST’s campus in Fairfax County, Virginia. The program fosters interest in Russian language and culture among students with and without access to Russian programs in their schools and/or communities by offering two class levels that differentiate from Novice-Mid for those new to Russian through Intermediate Low for those with prior Russian language experience. Although placement will be determined by language proficiency and not age, additional differentiation will occur to accommodate students’ varying rates of learning and levels of maturity. Classes will meet six and a half hours each day for 18 days, for a total of 120 hours of immersion instruction. Participants in Level One will reach Novice-Mid level proficiency by the program’s end, while those in Level Two will attain Novice-High.

    The STARTALK Discover Russian Teacher Program is a two-week (July 15-26, 2019) teacher training program located on the campus of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County, Virginia. The theme of the Teacher Program will be “A Roadmap for Teaching and Learning Russian using the World-Readiness Standards”, and it will provide 15 teachers of Russian with instruction six hours a day for 12 days. During this period, teachers will learn to deliver a standards-based instructional program at the K-12 level in Russian. Participants will create their own learning plans for their classrooms, while adhering to state and district guidelines. They will also explore new avenues with their students that will allow them to reach their final destination—Russia and Russian!

    Summary

    The Pushkin Summer Institute (PSI) at UW-Madison attracts academically serious high school students from underrepresented communities to its intensive 5-week program in Russian. PSI offers 20-25 hours of intensive classroom instruction weekly, in addition to a well-developed, integrated extracurricular program that allows students to put their Russian skills into practice in a variety of situations and advances students’ intercultural competence. PSI participants will be 24 rising juniors and seniors with at least one year of Russian instruction from secondary schools with majority Latino and/or African-American populations: Pritzker College Prep and The Noble Academy (Chicago, IL); we will also recruit from among economically disadvantaged minority students at Friends School (Baltimore). Our target proficiency goals are to advance students from Novice Mid to Novice High (in speaking, listening, writing) and Intermediate Low (in reading). Upon returning to their schools, students continue Russian instruction and act as mentors to their fellow students; the PSI Abroad in Latvia, our NSLI-Y project, allows PSI alumni to study in a six-week Russian-language immersion program in the summer after their STARTALK experience.

    Summary

    The theme of the program will be "STARTALK: Where East Meets West" focusing on Russian/Arabic language and cultural understanding in the professional world for future youth leaders which gives students the necessary skills for a successful trip to Russia/Arab World by providing learner-centered language instruction using topics and situations related to students' professional goals. This theme will help students explore the use of the Russian/Arabic language in the professional environment, learn about contemporary youth leadership festivals and understand the norms that are prevalent in Russian/Arabic youth culture today. The duration of the program is three weeks, for a total of ninety instructional hours and will be offered to local high school students and UCF undergraduate students, with a target enrollment of sixty participants. The participants will be divided into four groups of Novice Low to Novice-Mid level, with the latter group providing more in-depth content for returning STARTALK participants and those with some knowledge of the target language. The resource materials for future STARTALK language programs will be developed and shared in the future language conferences and publication series continuing " Picturing Russia: A Research Guide to Russian Culture" and "Language and Culture of doing Business in Russia" as well as developing Arabic resources.

    Summary

    14 rising high school 10-12 graders and Lewis University incoming freshmen, rising sophomores, and juniors with no prior knowledge of Russian will participate in Lewis University Summer StarTalk Program 2019. The program will immerse its participants into a culturally rich target language environment and will offer its students a variety of engaging, student- centered activities under the umbrella theme “Meeting Russia and Russians”. By the end of the Program, students are expected to develop interest in TL and culture and to reach basic (Novice Mid/Novice high) functional ability in Russian. The program will run for four weeks from June 17th and July 12th 2017, Monday through Friday and will provide 95 hours of instruction.

    The program accommodates 16 teachers of Russian working at the middle/high school and the college level with minimal or intermediate-level of experience. Over the course of 20 days (90 instructional hours), which are split between the on-line and on-site parts, the participants will acquire and/or expand the knowledge and understanding of basic tenets of second language acquisition and proficiency-based pedagogy, as well as practice the application of newly acquired concepts in real classroom. As a result of the program, the participants will become more efficient teachers of Russian, able to demonstrate such fundamental teaching skills as planning a lesson and a unit using backward design principles, providing comprehensible input, maximizing target language use, providing gradual and timely release of responsibility, administering performance-based assessment, and providing appropriate feedback. Importantly, the unique feature of the program, i.e., Russian-only environment of the Middlebury Summer School, will contribute to maintenance and improvement of the participants’ Russian language skills.. By engaging in reflexive practices throughout the program, participants will develop as thoughtful practitioners capable of reflecting and analyzing their own work and drawing lessons for future improvement.

    Summary

    LARC at SDSU will offer four-week language instruction in Arabic, Persian, Portuguese, and Russian languages to 48 non-heritage students (12 for each language program) from July 8th to August 2nd​. The program will be open to students in grades 9-12 with no prior knowledge of the language. Students will receive 120 hours of instruction during the summer camp. This immersion program will use a thematic curriculum “Contemporary Life: Young Adults in a Big City,” to develop students’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while simultaneously developing their cultural competence in the language and culture. The targeted goals are novice-high in listening and speaking, and novice-mid in reading and writing. Upon successful completion, the students will be awarded four units of undergraduate college credit through the SDSU College of Extended Studies. The program has 15 hours of follow-up sessions over 5 months (3 hours per month).

    Summary

    From Local to Global is a three-week summer language program designed to introduce 45 high school students to Arabic, Portuguese, and Russian language. They will be divided into three language groups. The program will have two sections for Arabic, two sections for Portuguese and one section for Russian. The proficiency level for Arabic and Russian is novice-low/mid. For Portuguese, the proficiency level is novice-high/ intermediate low . We noticed that students in this region learn Portuguese easily and quickly since the majority of students speak Spanish in this region and there are a lot of similarities between Spanish and Portuguese. The program offers six hours daily for fifteen days providing a total of ninety instructional hours. Summer language acquisition will be maintained and expanded during the subsequent school year, through the online portion of the program.

    The STARTALK Student Program, ‘Bridges to Russia: Culture and Social Sciences’ aims to enroll 20 high school Russian heritage students (14-18) in a four-week intensive language program meeting five hours a day for a total of 100 instructional hours. Students will increase their proficiency in Russian by examining how history and other social sciences help them to understand the world around them. The students will work closely with an elderly Russian-speaking community member and conduct an interview, which they will present in class. All interviews will be collected and turned into ‘Bridging the Generations’ project.
