    Summary

    The STARTALK: Queens University of Charlotte Summer Institute in Chinese and Arabic is a three-week, 90 hour non-residential language immersion program for rising 7th - 12th graders that takes place from 9:00AM to 3:00PM July 22nd to August 9th with free snack and low-cost lunch provided. Student-centered learning will occur in an immersion setting using a variety of authentic materials and supporting technologies that will prepare students to engage in meaningful intercultural communication centered around our theme of "Holidays and Celebrations." Students will develop proficiency from the Novice to Intermediate levels and the skills and motivation to become involved in post-program community activities offered by Queens and our community partners. Approximately 64 students will be admitted to Chinese and 32 to Arabic in a competitive application process that does not require prior knowledge of the language. Undergraduate credit (4 hours) is granted upon successful program completion; the program may be repeated at a higher level for 4 additional credits if sufficient progress is made.

    Summary

    The Teacher Program component of the 2019 GLP STARTALK Combination Program will take place over 10 days, and provide participants 65 contact hours. The program will be open to 20 participants, with a range of experience from novice (pre-service to 2 years) to master (8+ years). Participants will focus on the TELL Domain areas of ‘Planning,’ the ‘Learning Experience,’ and ‘Professionalism.’ Participants will have the opportunity to participate in full group and small group lectures and sessions, practice-teach at the GLP summer student Chinese program, as well as unit-plan. All participants will earn Continuing Teaching and Learning Education (CTLE) Credits from the New York State Education Department (NYSED).     Summary

    At the conclusion of the program, our students will have the necessary linguistic and cultural skills to interact with Arabic speakers on basic, everyday topics, especially the topic of food. We will recruit 20 students to participate in this intensive Arabic program. Our participants will be high school and college students (grades 9-16). Their proficiency level in Arabic will be Novice-High by the conclusion of the program. We will conduct about 94 instructional hours throughout a four-week period, to extend from July 2nd to July 26th, 2019.

    Summary

    CLASSRoad’s 2019 fully-online STARTALK program will provide opportunity for thirty-five (35) intermediate and master Arabic, Chinese and Persian language teachers to focus on TELL Learning Experience Domain LE4 (c and e) criteria and LE5 (a) criteria, Learning Tools Domain LT2 (a) criteria, and Professionalism Domain PR3 (b) criteria, building their ability to use the backward design process to plan for meaningful student engagement and successful attainment of daily performance objectives, leading toward unit or course proficiency targets. The program will include asynchronous/ synchronous interaction among instructors and participants, feature video presentations by experts, formative assessments, discussions, observations of recorded online language teaching examples-including video from previous year teacher participants-peer learning and feedback, peer microteaching practice, online co-teaching of remote language students, and self-assessment and personal growth plan development. The 4.5-week program (80 contact hours) will feature four and a half weeks of module-based daily instruction and group work, including online presentations by guest experts, several days of peer microteaching and preparation, followed by a fourth week that involves co-teaching to remote target language students, along with peer observation, personal reflection and professional planning. We are including foundational documents and concepts in the orientation module so that participants can gain earlier exposure to and practice with the content as they become familiar with the course organization and tools.

    Summary

    HCC will provide summer courses in Arabic and Chinese to 60 high school students in Howard County. HCC will recruit students from grades 9 – 12 from public, private, and homeschools in the county and will provide them with 95 hours of instruction over five weeks from July 1 through August 1. The theme of our program is East Meets West: A Global Exchange. Our program outcomes include the following: exiting participants at the novice-mid or novice-high/intermediate-low levels, increasing all participants’ understand of the cultures of the Arab and Chinese global world, recruiting learners to enroll in second-semester language courses offered in the Fall semester, exposing all learners to potential career opportunities requiring the knowledge and skills in a critical language, and continuing to promote heightened awareness of the cultures of Arab and Chinese communities and connections to these communities throughout the academic year.

    The Fauquier County 2019 STARTALK program includes twelve instructional days beginning July 8, 2019, and ending July 25, 2019 with a total of 70 instructional hours including extended day field trips. New and returning students, who are rising fifth to ninth graders, will be placed into differentiated classes with expected novice-low to intermediate-low proficiency levels. Our program theme will be "The Journey Continues" as we explore authentic cultural aspects of from locations throughout the Middle East where the target languages are spoken. Students will engage in interactive activities and design digital portfolios of their journeys.

    The Wyoming STARTALK Arabic Camp for 2019 will enthrall Wyoming and other Rocky Mountain front range high school and junior college students with visions and experiences of Arabian Nights. The same kind of intrigue and mystique surrounding the popular tales will take on a modern spin by whisking students through contemporary experiences of evening and night activities in various countries in the Middle East around which are structured valuable language learning experiences rich with culture and anecdotal information that will necessarily reinforce language acquisition over the course of three weeks for a total of 162 contact instructional hours. We will provide opportunities for 24 students to explore the rich culture of the Middle East as experienced through cultural engagements by equipping these students with the necessary vocabulary and conversational skills to navigate successfully through various simulations recreating cultural experiences. Students will reach the Novice-Mid level of proficiency.

    Summary

    HEB ISD’s “STARTALK: Building a Legacy” language academy will provide three weeks / 90 hours of student-centered learning and instruction in Arabic, Chinese, and Hindi to rising sixth and seventh graders for novice level, and intermediate level practice for 8th-11th grade students, as well as exposure to all three languages and cultures. Projected enrollment for Arabic, Chinese, and Hindi is 50 students per language, comprising 30 novice sixth and seventh graders and 20 intermediate students. At the end of this academy, we expect rising sixth and seventh-grade students to achieve novice low-to-mid level oral proficiency in their language of choice and upper grades students to achieve intermediate low-to-mid level. We anticipate that approximately 90% of our seventh-grade students will continue in the language course in the fall in our district. For intermediate students, we expect their scores on the IB exams to reflect the benefits of additional language practice and cultural experience.

    Summary

    The theme of the program will be "STARTALK: Where East Meets West" focusing on Russian/Arabic language and cultural understanding in the professional world for future youth leaders which gives students the necessary skills for a successful trip to Russia/Arab World by providing learner-centered language instruction using topics and situations related to students' professional goals. This theme will help students explore the use of the Russian/Arabic language in the professional environment, learn about contemporary youth leadership festivals and understand the norms that are prevalent in Russian/Arabic youth culture today. The duration of the program is three weeks, for a total of ninety instructional hours and will be offered to local high school students and UCF undergraduate students, with a target enrollment of sixty participants. The participants will be divided into four groups of Novice Low to Novice-Mid level, with the latter group providing more in-depth content for returning STARTALK participants and those with some knowledge of the target language. The resource materials for future STARTALK language programs will be developed and shared in the future language conferences and publication series continuing " Picturing Russia: A Research Guide to Russian Culture" and "Language and Culture of doing Business in Russia" as well as developing Arabic resources.

    Summary

    LARC at SDSU will offer four-week language instruction in Arabic, Persian, Portuguese, and Russian languages to 48 non-heritage students (12 for each language program) from July 8th to August 2nd​. The program will be open to students in grades 9-12 with no prior knowledge of the language. Students will receive 120 hours of instruction during the summer camp. This immersion program will use a thematic curriculum “Contemporary Life: Young Adults in a Big City,” to develop students’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while simultaneously developing their cultural competence in the language and culture. The targeted goals are novice-high in listening and speaking, and novice-mid in reading and writing. Upon successful completion, the students will be awarded four units of undergraduate college credit through the SDSU College of Extended Studies. The program has 15 hours of follow-up sessions over 5 months (3 hours per month).
