    The STARTALK Student Program, ‘Bridges to Russia: Culture and Social Sciences’ aims to enroll 20 high school Russian heritage students (14-18) in a four-week intensive language program meeting five hours a day for a total of 100 instructional hours. Students will increase their proficiency in Russian by examining how history and other social sciences help them to understand the world around them. The students will work closely with an elderly Russian-speaking community member and conduct an interview, which they will present in class. All interviews will be collected and turned into ‘Bridging the Generations’ project.

    The STARTALK Russian Language and Culture Immersion Program is designed for undergraduate students who see themselves pursuing professional careers where their knowledge of the Russian language and culture will be a major asset. The rigorous residential five-week curriculum is organized around the general theme “Let’s Talk About Life” and covers various life aspects including but not limited to education, professional career, social life, hobbies and interests. The level-appropriate linguistic, cultural, and professional competencies that the students develop enable them to employ their knowledge of Russia and Russian in a host of future careers all over the world across professional areas. The program is designed to promote accelerated language learning with integrated knowledge of culture, protocols, and national identity in modern Russia. It will admit 20 undergraduate students from universities and community colleges across the nation, dividing cohorts into two proficiency tracks: Novice and Intermediate. Standards-based and thematically organized curriculum is programmed over five weeks of residential study with 270 hours of structured learning: 125 hours of in-class instruction; 105 hours of self-directed learning activities; and 40 hours of weekend cultural enrichment activities. Participants typically advance one to two ACTFL tiers in language proficiency.

    Summary

    Our program targets rising juniors and seniors in U.S. high schools who are new learners of Mandarin Chinese and Russian. The major goals of the Academy are to provide a safe, culture-rich environment for the early development of communicative proficiency; to set our students on the path to advanced-level proficiency; and to assess the impact of the program’s innovative language teaching approach. The Academy will follow a theme-based curriculum with a task-based pedagogy designed to close the gap between classroom performance and real-world proficiency by providing learners with opportunities to perform real-world problem solving tasks, to explore their individual interests in Chinese and Russian language and culture, to connect with native speakers of the language both in the local community and online, and to discuss career opportunities with individuals who use the language in their professional life. The total number of instructional hours is 244, and the Academy will begin on June 17, 2019 and end on July 12, 2019. The summer program is followed by a mandatory academic-year blended-learning component, upon successful completion of which participants receive high school and college credit.

    Pitt STARTALK “We're Off to Russia!” is an intensive four-week-long Russian summer school for high school students that is administered by the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) and will take place on June 17 through July 12, 2019 on Pitt campus. 20 students from five partnering high schools that offer academic year Russian language programs (Pittsburgh Brashear High School, Penn Trafford High School, Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School, Pritzker College Prep, and Noble Academy) along with students from other U.S. high schools will participate in this Russian language and culture program. The curriculum that is based on the theme “We’re Off to Russia!” will prepare participants for a study-abroad program in Russia. Besides performance-based instructions that target the acquisition of speaking, listening, reading, and writing proficiency in Russian, high school students will also have a chance to explore Russian culture around Pittsburgh, by visiting a Russian church, buying groceries in a Russian store, cooking Russian cuisine, learning Russian songs and poems, participating in Russian art and craft workshops, and meeting with the members of the local Russian community.

    Summary

    The 2019 STARTALK Denton ISD, non-residential, intensive Russian summer program - Welcome to My World - will provide four weeks and 120 instructional hours of student-centered learning and instruction in Russian to 11th and 12th graders and UNT undergraduate students at the Novice level. The program participants will be given the opportunity to become part of our University of North Texas (UNT) learning community and will study Russian through full immersion in Russian language and authentic Russian culture, which is integrated in every learning episode.

    Upon the successful completion of the program, our students will achieve the High Novice level of language proficiency in Russian, will be able to communicate appropriately at the High Novice level and will enhance their cultural awareness. Additionally, all students who successfully complete the program will be awarded 3 college credit hours free of charge. In-class tuition, all cultural activities, including field trips, all learning and teaching materials will be provided free of charge to all students.     Summary

    The 2019 STARTALK UTA intensive Russian program, entitled Let’s Travel to Russia, is a four-week (120 instructional hours) program for 11th-12th graders and undergraduate students with no prior knowledge of Russian or at a low novice level.
    Through an engaging series of role-plays, this student-centered program will incorporate various topics relevant to traveling to Russia (e.g. planning the trip, at the airport, at the hotel, sightseeing, visiting a host family, eating out, etc.) and will prepare students for a variety of cultural and language situations, allowing for mastering basic literacy and communicative skills in Russian.
    Upon successful completion of the program, the students will achieve a high novice or low intermediate level of Russian language proficiency and will have a basic understanding of Russian culture. Furthermore, students wishing to continue their Russian studies at UTA will be eligible to earn up to eight university credit hours through the university placement test. This test will incur no personal expense on the part of the student. This gives students the opportunity to become part of the UTA language learning community.

    The STARTALK Student Program, “Russian in the Sky and in Outer Space,” aims to enroll 20 high school and early college Russian heritage students in a four-week intensive STEM-based language program meeting five hours a day for a total of 100 instructional hours. The program intends to increase students’ proficiency in Interpretive Reading, Presentational Speaking, and Presentational Writing. For the Interpersonal Mode, students will increase their linguistic accuracy and sensitivity to cultural norms, e.g., social register and extended linguistic forms not typically encountered in intimate family speech. Students will be able to earn five University of Washington credits by enrolling in RUSS 499 and also have an opportunity to complete language proficiency assessments that high school students may be able to use in order to receive up to four high school competency-based credits. The language proficiency assessment results may also qualify the students to receive the state Seal of Biliteracy. All students will receive placement results for future study of Russian at the UW.

    This program is a four-week intensive program that is designed to move students forward in their Russian language proficiency development. It incorporates learners from grades 1-12 from the Novice to the Intermediate-low levels. In grades 3-6, the students experience a content-related FLES program that introduces them to Russian language and culture. In grades 7-12, students are placed according to their previous learning experience in level 1-3 classes. The theme of this year's program will be related to traveling to Russia. The program will run from June 26-July 19, 2019.

    Summary

    Arizona State University (ASU) will provide an intensive, 3-week, 4.5-classroom-hour/day, non-residential program in elementary Russian for 28 participants in grades 9-12 from Central Arizona, bringing them from proficiency 0 to Novice Mid in speaking, listening, and reading. STARTALK participants will work in small groups in intensive sessions designed and provided by the STARTALK team on the campus of ASU and, by video conferencing, activity guides and host families of the concurrently running Russian language program in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, from ASU’s Critical Languages Institute (CLI). Having STARTALK participants interact with CLI Russian students, in both domestic and abroad programs, is part of the larger strategy of academic mentoring intended to steer participants into the Central Arizona Russian Proficiency pipeline -- a network of high-school instructors and advisers, state university advisers and instructors, and CLI career and grant advisers who work one-on-one with participants to plot out pathways from STARTALK, to high-school Russian, to NSLI-Y, to college Russian and CLS or CLI, to summer and semester-long study abroad with NSEP, Fulbright, or private funding, with the goal of supporting participants through to advanced or superior levels of Russian by the time they receive their BA. Bringing together faculty and staff from Arizona school districts’ Russian programs, ASU’s Russian program, and ASU’s summer intensive program at CLI, ASU’s Russian STARTALK program will serve as a hub for Russian instruction and Russian study-abroad programs in Central Arizona and the southwest.
