    Summary

    The Jefferson School District STARTALK Chinese Summer Camp is an opportunity for rising sixth and seventh grade Chinese immersion students to join for an intensive linguistic and cultural experience. The camp will run Monday through Thursday for five hours per day for three weeks. Students will complete an online component to the camp before the face-to-face portion, which will be held at Rigby Middle School.

    Participation in the camp is free. Transportation by school bus to and from the camp will be available to all camp participants. Lunch and snacks will be provided each day of the camp. Students will also receive a program T-shirt and lanyard.

    During the camp, students will engage with the theme “Health and the Human Body” through their participation in a small group, Project Based Learning (PBL) experience where they will create and give a presentation on a human body system of their choice to an authentic Chinese audience. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in a fetal pig dissection, Tai Chi/Kun Fu Fan Dancing, singing traditional Chinese songs, and cooking traditional Chinese food. It is anticipated that, after participating in the camp, students will be able to engage in Intermediate Mid discourse regarding healthy forms of living and eating in the Chinese and American cultures and the organs and functions of various human body systems.

    Summary

    The TCSD STARTALK Summer Learning program will provide an engaging language learning environment for 400 children ages 5-9. These children are current and future immersion students in existing immersion programs in the district, and will continue their language learning in strong programs during the normal school year. As Novice language learners, they will receive age and proficiency level appropriate instruction over the course of five days (40 hours).     Summary

    The 2019 STARTALK DCPS program will enroll 80 upper elementary and middle school DCPS and DC resident students in a 3-week language and culture program. The student program will run from July 1 through July 19 from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm for a total of 98 instructional hours. Students will be grouped by proficiency levels and will study the theme of Contemporary Life in China, looking at authentic materials focusing on (1) current events and contemporary issues, (2) current trends, and (3) popular culture. As a part of the program, DCPS will partner with local organizations and museums to bring authentic learning experiences to the students inside and outside of the classroom. Students will exit the program with both enhanced proficiency in Chinese and a deeper understanding of daily life in China that will pique their interest and set a strong foundation for future learning.

    Summary

    The 13-day Chinese and Turkish programs with a total of 91 hours instruction in Chinese or 91 hours instruction in Turkish will allow 24 middle school and high school students (grades 6-12) who have limited or no previous experience in Chinese to attain novice-mid proficiency in Chinese and 10 high school juniors and seniors (grades 11-12) along with college freshmen and sophomores who have limited or no previous experience in Turkish to attain novice-mid proficiency in Turkish. During each 7-hour day, students will engage in immersive language learning, practicing Martial Arts or Taekwondo, drumming, and music. The theme “A Musical Journey through China, a Musical Journey through Turkey” will provide ample opportunities for communication about food, geography, families, music, and basic greetings and introductions; learning about the cultures and content of the Chinese/Turkish traditions, music and sports; connecting to art and history. A field trip to the Atlanta Chinatown or the local Turkish cultural center will provide a rich exchange of activities with native speakers and an authentic opportunity for interpersonal communication. By the end of the program, students will reach "novice-mid" in all modes of communication based on the ACTFL proficiency guidelines and will be able to handle many authentic tasks, including telling and asking about basic personal information, commenting on their favorite Chinese or Turkish food, cities and musical instruments, designing itineraries, and performing skits and songs in Chinese or Turkish.

    Summary

    The STARTALK: Queens University of Charlotte Summer Institute in Chinese and Arabic is a three-week, 90 hour non-residential language immersion program for rising 7th - 12th graders that takes place from 9:00AM to 3:00PM July 22nd to August 9th with free snack and low-cost lunch provided. Student-centered learning will occur in an immersion setting using a variety of authentic materials and supporting technologies that will prepare students to engage in meaningful intercultural communication centered around our theme of "Holidays and Celebrations." Students will develop proficiency from the Novice to Intermediate levels and the skills and motivation to become involved in post-program community activities offered by Queens and our community partners. Approximately 64 students will be admitted to Chinese and 32 to Arabic in a competitive application process that does not require prior knowledge of the language. Undergraduate credit (4 hours) is granted upon successful program completion; the program may be repeated at a higher level for 4 additional credits if sufficient progress is made.

    Summary

    The Teacher Program component of the 2019 GLP STARTALK Combination Program will take place over 10 days, and provide participants 65 contact hours. The program will be open to 20 participants, with a range of experience from novice (pre-service to 2 years) to master (8+ years). Participants will focus on the TELL Domain areas of ‘Planning,’ the ‘Learning Experience,’ and ‘Professionalism.’ Participants will have the opportunity to participate in full group and small group lectures and sessions, practice-teach at the GLP summer student Chinese program, as well as unit-plan. All participants will earn Continuing Teaching and Learning Education (CTLE) Credits from the New York State Education Department (NYSED).     Summary

    CLASSRoad’s 2019 fully-online STARTALK program will provide opportunity for thirty-five (35) intermediate and master Arabic, Chinese and Persian language teachers to focus on TELL Learning Experience Domain LE4 (c and e) criteria and LE5 (a) criteria, Learning Tools Domain LT2 (a) criteria, and Professionalism Domain PR3 (b) criteria, building their ability to use the backward design process to plan for meaningful student engagement and successful attainment of daily performance objectives, leading toward unit or course proficiency targets. The program will include asynchronous/ synchronous interaction among instructors and participants, feature video presentations by experts, formative assessments, discussions, observations of recorded online language teaching examples-including video from previous year teacher participants-peer learning and feedback, peer microteaching practice, online co-teaching of remote language students, and self-assessment and personal growth plan development. The 4.5-week program (80 contact hours) will feature four and a half weeks of module-based daily instruction and group work, including online presentations by guest experts, several days of peer microteaching and preparation, followed by a fourth week that involves co-teaching to remote target language students, along with peer observation, personal reflection and professional planning. We are including foundational documents and concepts in the orientation module so that participants can gain earlier exposure to and practice with the content as they become familiar with the course organization and tools.

    Summary

    The Mandarin Institute STARTALK PRE-AP Program will provide 100 students from across the US the opportunity to strengthen their Chinese language skills whether in preparation for an AP Chinese course or for those who just want to improve their Chinese. The online learning environment is powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that incorporates the best strategies for second language acquisition which makes learning Chinese more efficient, effective and engaging.

    Through the theme of Innovation and Invention, participants will learn about the Four Great Inventions of China (paper, gunpowder, printing, compass), compare and contrast American and Chinese ingenuity and progress through innovations to today's social media, and explore the impact of these innovations on our lives.

    Each day students will engage in 90 minutes of synchronous online instruction with a teacher and 3 other students in addition to ~ 2 hours of asynchronous learning which includes independent, pair and group projects. Upon completion of the 50-hour program, students will attain intermediate-mid to intermediate-high ACTFL proficiency level and will have exposure to AP content and instruction.

    * All applicants will be given a complimentary license to AI tools that enable comprehension of text and facilitate independent reading.

    Summary

    HCC will provide summer courses in Arabic and Chinese to 60 high school students in Howard County. HCC will recruit students from grades 9 – 12 from public, private, and homeschools in the county and will provide them with 95 hours of instruction over five weeks from July 1 through August 1. The theme of our program is East Meets West: A Global Exchange. Our program outcomes include the following: exiting participants at the novice-mid or novice-high/intermediate-low levels, increasing all participants’ understand of the cultures of the Arab and Chinese global world, recruiting learners to enroll in second-semester language courses offered in the Fall semester, exposing all learners to potential career opportunities requiring the knowledge and skills in a critical language, and continuing to promote heightened awareness of the cultures of Arab and Chinese communities and connections to these communities throughout the academic year.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Summer Bridging Academies in Portland offer a three-week intensive language and culture learning experience for 100 K-5 students of Chinese and 40 K-5 students of Russian who are currently enrolled in Portland Public Schools’ Dual Language Immersion programs, will be entering grade K, or plan late entry into a program in Fall 2019. The Academies provide 48 hours of instruction based on the theme of “Bridging Cultures through Cuisine.” Student outcomes target a one proficiency sublevel gain, from Novice to Intermediate and, for struggling students, a boost going into the school year. As part of a combined STARTALK program that additionally offers a Teacher Academy, students will be exposed to a curriculum infused by the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching and Learning and help solidify Portland Public Schools contribution to a pipeline of students enrolled in the study of critical languages.
