    Summary

    We are proposing a 10-day residential program that brings together sixteen experienced teachers of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) and four master teachers, to focus on strategies for literacy acquisition in Chinese, with an emphasis on developing higher level reading. The participants will be selected to form four evenly balanced teams representing teachers from college (grades 13+), high school (9-12) teaching at the intermediate level or higher, middle school (6-8) and high school teaching at the novice level, and immersion programs in grades 3-8. Participants will be on task for a total of 90 hours, using studies of higher level literacy skills in Chinese and English to set higher level literacy goals for students of CFL and best practices for achieving them, and designing thematically-based units that implement these best practices in a Standards-based curriculum. The units that the participants develop will be posted on the Holy Cross Chinese Literacy website and will be freely accessible to all.

    Summary

    “STARTALK: Bridges to Russia: Culture and Social Studies” is a four-week (100 hours) intensive Russian language program for heritage speakers of Intermediate High and Advanced Low levels of proficiency, who attend high schools in the US (20 participants). The theme of the program is personal and family stories in the broader context of Russian history of the 20th century with the linguistic focus on reading and writing proficiency. Our students will be involved in community service at the local retirement home, where they will conduct a series of interviews with the Russian-speaking residents and show to them their final projects (digital story telling – in collaboration with Harvard Art Museum) /performance (theater) /Editorial Room (newspaper writing). This year, we will offer to our instructors a four-day comprehensive professional development seminar on STARTALK principals, lesson planning and teaching techniques.

    Summary

    The Startalk funded Chinese Dragon's Math Maze - Building Community through Kindness Program will enable approximately 100 children from the City of Springfield and some surrounding communities to receive introductory as well as ongoing instruction in Chinese Language and Culture from grades K-12 . The program will run daily from 8:30 to 2:30 for 15 days, for a total of 90 instructional contact hours from Monday, July 9th through Friday, July 27th, 2018. A pre-program, baseline assessment will determine students' prior knowledge and will be used for appropriate placement of students. While high school students will participate in the online Lingua Folio assessment, a culminating student performance activity for ALL students will serve as a summative outcome indicating mastery of math content and skills, as well as knowledge of language and culture.

    STARTALK: Planning for Engaged Language Learning

    Summary

    CLASSRoad’s 2018 fully-online STARTALK program will provide opportunity for thirty-five (35) intermediate and master Arabic, Chinese and Persian language teachers to focus on TELL Planning Domain P6 (a and c) criteria, Learning Experience Domain LE2 (a and b) criteria, LE4 (a and b) criteria, building their ability to: 1) use the backward design process to plan for meaningful student engagement, 2) create daily performance objectives that capture student energy and commitment and that move them toward proficiency targets, and 3) provide comprehensible input while using the target language 90% of the time. The program will include asynchronous/ synchronous interaction among instructors and participants, feature video presentations by experts, formative assessments, discussions, observations of recorded online language teaching examples--including video from previous year teacher participants--peer learning and feedback, peer microteaching practice, online co-teaching of remote language students, and self-assessment and personal growth plan development. The four-week program (80 contact hours) will feature three weeks of module-based daily instruction and group work, including online synchronous presentations by guest experts, several days of peer microteaching and preparation, followed by a fourth week that involves co-teaching to remote novice target language students, along with peer observation, personal reflection and professional planning. The program will be fully delivered online using the CLASSRoad Canvas learning management system and the web-conference platform Adobe Connect, which allows for adaptive design, improved mobile accessibility, the giving of timely feedback, and the course to be structured in an innovative and highly interactive manner.

    Summary

    2018 STARTALK Turkish Summer Camp (The Program), organized by Ace It Education Inc., d.b.a. Turkish Cultural Center Boston (TCC), will serve 30 ‘heritage learners’ of the Turkish language in grades 3 through 8. The target Turkish proficiency levels of the students are intermediate mid and intermediate high. The program will offer 84 hours of instructional time in a well-structured classroom environment in 3 weeks in July 2018. The outcome of the Program will be to teach students the value of bilingualism and excel in their “heritage language” by better understanding and presenting new vocabulary with nuances.
