    Mississippi Chinese StarTalk 13 will offer four weeks of intensive residential instruction (20 days and 100 contact hours of instruction) to up to 30 high school students from Mississippi and other states who will learn the language in three different levels ranging from Novice Mid to Intermediate Mid. A team of three teachers, one program coordinator, three tutor-counselors and other staff members will oversee the program academically and culturally. During the course of this program, students will learn to appreciate the Chinese language by possessing it and communicating in it, while being immersed in nine communication tasks in both spoken and written Chinese. Students admitted to the program will receive full funding and those completing the program will receive six hours of college Chinese credit.

    Summary

    The program will offer 91 hours of learner centered Hindi language learning and culture immersion experience to 86 early elementary to middle school participants (rising 1st to 8th graders). Major goal of the program will be to develop Hindi language competence of all participants (ranging from novice to intermediate level) by at least one higher sub level in three modes of communication. Participants will be placed in level and age- appropriate classes, based on their pre-program informal Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) assessment. Learners will develop Hindi language skills and cultural understanding by exploring program's overarching theme “Animal vs. Pet Culture- In India and USA”. We expect learners to be able to interact, verbally and in writing at higher sub level through gathering and sharing meaningful information on theme related topics. Theme based games, competitions, multimedia projects, hands-on native visual and performing arts projects will further provide all learners of varied need the opportunity to engage in meaningful communication, create and present collaborative products for peer assessment, and self reflection. They will be able to demonstrate their ability to use Hindi in real life situations through active interaction, interviews and collaboration with heritage/native language speakers, experts and authentic audience. The program will also provide continued Hindi language and culture learning opportunity to learners during its 20 week online-blended session (September 2019- March 2020).

    Summary

    The STARTALK UNR Chinese Language and Culture Program plans to host 40 local middle and high school students (grades 6-12) and offer two level courses for new students and returning students. The course will last three weeks (June 10-28, 2019), meeting Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with 90 instructional hours. Students will study Chinese language through the cultural theme of the Chinese New Year. Upon the successful completion of the STARTALK program, students of Level I will reach Novice Mid and students of level II will reach Novice High. Throughout the program, students will engage in student-centered learning and hands-on activities in the target language.

    Summary

    STARTALK @ Wofford offers 110 instructional hours, blended beginning Chinese language and culture courses (two-week intensive summer classes, 40-hour online learning, literacy engagement activity, or individualized sessions in the fall and early winter) to forty-five 6th-12th graders in Spartanburg, Greenville, nearby counties and other places who have little prior access to Chinese language and culture. The goals are to provide communicative language learning and hands-on cultural activities to promote participants’ learning of Chinese language and culture, and to boost their awareness of the national need to learn a strategic language such as Chinese, the differences/similarities between Chinese language and culture and their base language and culture, and an awareness of the local Chinese community. During the program, participants will receive performance-based language instruction, participate in hands-on cultural activities, and apply what they have learned in tasks that simulate future communication in an exchange program. Participants will engage in all communication modes, and improve their language proficiency 1-2 sublevels higher.

    Summary

    The program uses the best practices of the blended model to offer a five-week summer language and culture program for 10 high school and 10 college level students with little or no background. High school students who do well in the summer session may continue in the program and earn 3 college credits by taking a post-summer 10 week online course. College students with satisfactory learning performance will be accepted into the Chinese Flagship program. The program enables American students to receive quality instruction in Chinese language from trained native speakers in the teacher program while taking part in rich cultural activities. Students will receive up to a total of 110 instructional hours. Students will achieve at least one sub-level of proficiency growth in speaking by the end of the summer program as demonstrated by the STAMP test results.

    Summary

    Ten pre-service and in-service teachers will be given the opportunity to complete proficiency- and evidence-based training through the cycle of observe, teach, critique, and reflect. The training will emphasize the importance of implementing a standards-based and thematically organized curriculum, using the target language, and providing comprehensible input for instruction. The design of the teacher program is closely integrated with the student program. Participants will gain abundant experience in both classroom-based and online teaching. Participants can earn graduate credits toward the M.A. in the Teaching Chinese degree and the New York State teacher certificate. Instruction is approximately 120 hours; the program will run from June 26, 2019 to December 8th, 2019. There will be two workshops for participants in the fall of 2019.

    Summary

    Environmental Challenges in India and Pakistan: Impact and Solutions serves as the theme for Kean’s 2019 Global Project-Based Learning Program designed for secondary/early post-secondary heritage language learners at the Intermediate/Advanced level who wish to gain higher levels of language and intercultural proficiency through the study of Hindi/Urdu in the real world context of the current public discussion about environmental issues and how to address them. The program is a three-week standards-driven blended learning experience totaling 99-instructional hours focused on using Hindi/Urdu to gain knowledge about and take action on a global issue. Learner outcomes include: demonstration of growth in interpretive reading, presentational writing and presentational speaking, increased linguistic accuracy and use of appropriate verbal and non-verbal strategies in interpersonal and presentational communication, and development of intercultural and global competencies through daily interactions with students from partner schools in India and Pakistan and environmental experts.

    Summary

    The 2019 Kean Teacher Program is designed for heritage, native or non-native speakers of Hindi or Urdu at the Advanced-Mid Level or higher that have 2 or more years experience teaching in heritage language schools, in STARTALK Programs and/or have previously attended NYU STARTALK Teacher Training Programs. The blended learning program will enroll 5 Hindi and 4 Urdu teachers in credit-bearing graduate coursework in partial fulfillment of the requirements leading to a Master’s Degree in Hindi and Urdu Language Pedagogy. Teachers will pursue 4.5 credit hours of onsite pedagogy coursework while concurrently engaging in clinical observation and practice during the Kean Student Hindi/Urdu Summer Program. They will then pursue 6-credit hours of content, theory and pedagogy online coursework as part of the Extended Teacher Program. Program outcomes include: acquisition of pedagogical knowledge and skills (contemporary, research-based instructional methods and assessment practices) through summer onsite courses that include integration of content, theory and pedagogy into clinical practice in the Student Program and acquisition of content (language, literature and linguistics) through extended online courses. Credits earned in graduate courses may be used to fulfill licensure requirements or to pursue Alternate Route Certification Programs offered in most states.

    Summary

    This three-week program with a theme ‘Virtual Visit to East Africa’ will have two sections with proficiency level of Novice Mid (Section 1) and Novice High (Section 2). Total number of participants expected is 20 ranging from rising 8th to 12th graders (15 new and 5 returning). They will receive IU pre-college credits. Classes will meet daily for 5 hours for 20 days from June 5 to July 3 and each day will include instructional time, conversation breakout sessions, and simulated field trips. There will be a graduation ceremony on the last day of the program for the students to showcase their achievement to the community, and so total instructional time will be 98 hours. Students will have a daily 45-minute lunch break when they can interact with each other with the help of conversation partners.

    Summary

    Arizona State University (ASU) will provide an intensive, 3-week, 4.5-classroom-hour/day, non-residential program in elementary Russian for 28 participants in grades 9-12 from Central Arizona, bringing them from proficiency 0 to Novice Mid in speaking, listening, and reading. STARTALK participants will work in small groups in intensive sessions designed and provided by the STARTALK team on the campus of ASU and, by video conferencing, activity guides and host families of the concurrently running Russian language program in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, from ASU’s Critical Languages Institute (CLI). Having STARTALK participants interact with CLI Russian students, in both domestic and abroad programs, is part of the larger strategy of academic mentoring intended to steer participants into the Central Arizona Russian Proficiency pipeline -- a network of high-school instructors and advisers, state university advisers and instructors, and CLI career and grant advisers who work one-on-one with participants to plot out pathways from STARTALK, to high-school Russian, to NSLI-Y, to college Russian and CLS or CLI, to summer and semester-long study abroad with NSEP, Fulbright, or private funding, with the goal of supporting participants through to advanced or superior levels of Russian by the time they receive their BA. Bringing together faculty and staff from Arizona school districts’ Russian programs, ASU’s Russian program, and ASU’s summer intensive program at CLI, ASU’s Russian STARTALK program will serve as a hub for Russian instruction and Russian study-abroad programs in Central Arizona and the southwest.
