    Summary

The CFISD STARTALK Chinese Language Summer Camp is a three and a half week (90 instructional hours) Chinese Immersion program for forty students in grades 3-5, who have little to no knowledge of the Chinese language and culture. The program aims to stimulate curiosity in the community about the Chinese language and culture and build learner’s interest in continuing their language study in middle school or high school. Under the theme 2020: Let’s Go Somewhere! students will virtually explore China while reading a story about a young person’s travel, exploring two or three Chinese cities. Students will learn about the geography of China, the modes of transportation, the weather, interesting sites and monuments, family members, and important holidays and cultural events such as the Peking Opera. By the end of the program, at least 90% of the students will reach a least a “novice-mid” proficiency level in all modes of communication based on the ACTFL 2012 Proficiency Guidelines.

    Summary

OneWorld Now!’s vision is that all young Americans have access to transformative international education. Through our year-round, Seattle-based Global Leadership Program, we integrate critical language learning, leadership training, and study abroad scholarships for underserved high school students. Thanks to STARTALK, OWN has offered a three-week Arabic, Chinese, and Korean summer program for each of the last eleven years, with follow-on language classes available through the OWN academic year program. In our twelth year offering the STARTALK summer immersion program, we again propose to hold a three-week-long, non-residential Arabic, Chinese, and Korean language immersion program for non-heritage high school students in Seattle, with a focus on low-income high school youth of color. The program includes 15 six-hour days, for a total of 90 contact hours. The desired outcome of the STARTALK-OWN Summer Language Camp will be to introduce 51 students to Arabic, Korean, and Mandarin Chinese, as well as to motivate them to continue their language and cultural studies.
