    Summary

    The STARTALK Arabic Academy at Penn State is an ambitious, multifaceted program for 20 high school and college students to take an introductory college course in Arabic. Starting with no prior knowledge of Arabic, students will reach novice-mid or novice-high level. For 4 weeks (June 17 -July 12, 2019), a multinational instructional team provides instruction in Arabic for 5.5 hours daily Monday through Thursday, an additional 2 hours of afternoon immersion twice a week, and 4.5 hours on Friday, for a total of 113 available instructional hours. Upon successful completion, students earn 4 Penn State credits (one semester of college Arabic). Through student-centered, task-based, and communicative activities, students will become acquainted with Arabic cultures and learn to communicate in Arabic.

    Summary

    The Arabic Summer Academy Boston is an intensive program that welcomes high school students from around Boston to learn Arabic and explore the cultures of the Arabic-speaking world in an engaging and supportive environment. The program creates a dynamic academic environment where students from a variety of backgrounds can express their full selves, build communicative skills, and develop an ethic of lifelong learning as global citizens. The Arabic Summer Academy is a 17-day (102-hour) non-residential program, and it produces 40 graduates (grades 9-12) who have reached proficiency between the Novice Mid and Novice High levels in Arabic.

    Summary

    ALEFE summer program “Celebrations of Arab Nations” is a 18 days summer camp intended to allow twenty heritage and non-heritage students to develop both their communication skills in Arabic and their cultural awareness about the Arab world. In a Montessori classroom set-up, students will be exposed to the various ways in which Arab nations celebrate two special occasions: weddings and baby showers. They will acquire new knowledge about the way these special occasions are celebrated in terms of food, costumes and social figures. Through the study of the two celebrations, the program is to allow K-2nd grade students with limited or no proficiency in Arabic to interact using simple vocabulary and sentences to communicate with an authentic audience and to use their new acquired knowledge to create and present two mock celebrations to others. Following the program’s 90 hours of instructions, students will be able not only to compare the similarities and differences between cultural practices in the US and in the Arab World, but to also realize how internally diverse an apparently monolithic culture could be.

    Summary

    The 2019 STARTALK funds will guarantee continued Arabic culture and language learning opportunities at Bell and Hamilton High Schools to students at Arabic levels I and Heritage Speakers, grades 9th through 12th. The program will offer 45 students at the two locations the opportunity to receive Arabic immersed instruction of 90 hours (75 hours of face-to face and 15 hours on line instruction) asynchronous learning model enhanced through culture, technology, and social media. The intended duration of the program for 2019 Summer is from June 24, 2019 to July 17th , 2019. The goal of the program is to increase oral and written proficiency by one sub-level on the ACTFL Proficiency Scales (Arabic I NM-NH, Heritage IM-IH). We anticipate that approximately 95% of our Level I, and Heritage Students will continue in our 2019- 2020 academic year to increase enrollment in the Arabic programs offered at the two high schools at LAUSD.

    Summary

    The program “Arabic in New Mexico: A Common Past and Shared Future” will provide Arabic instruction for 36 students grades 6-12 at the Novice and Intermediate levels over the course of three weeks (97.5 contact hours). Novice students will reach the Novice High level with some performance at the Intermediate Low level, and Intermediate students will reach the Intermediate Low level with some performance at the Intermediate Mid level in all language skills. The program will be guided by the World-Readiness Standards for Language Learning and use performance-based assessment. Through classroom instruction, community interactions, and extracurricular activities, students will develop a greater understanding of past and present cultural connections between New Mexico and the Arab world.

    Summary

    The STARTALK 2019: Summer Arabic Language Teacher Training Program (SALTT) aims to train a group of approximately 15 Arabic language educators, heritage and non-heritage, of elementary age students in the strategies of STEAM-based language instruction, the STARTALK principles, and teacher effectiveness for language learning critera. The outcomes of the program are twofold: First, the program will develop teachers who are competent in implementing STARTALK-standards-based Arabic language instruction in their classrooms. Second, the candidates will complete 94 instructional hours of content learning and practical application of STEAM-based Arabic through a 9 week blended program where teachers spend an initial 3 weeks in an online course exploring STEAM research and discussing the standards and principles of language learning before they participate in 6 weeks of curriculum design, material development, and clinical experiences in the SAMI practicum. Through their participation in the SAMI practicum, the teacher participants will ultimately learn how to 1) prepare a STEAM-based Arabic language and culture curriculum, 2) create and implement units and learning plans using backwards design and a theme, and 3) differentiate learning for diverse learners while keeping them engaged.

    This professional development program, designed for 10 current and prospective teachers of Arabic at middle school, high school, and post-secondary levels, uses a three-part blended learning structure: (1) a 3-week pre-seminar online component (estimated 20 hours' instructional time), June 1-20; (2) a 7-day residential seminar (54 instructional hours), held at Penn State's University Park Campus, June 22-28, during which the teachers participate in teaching high school and college students who are taking an introductory Arabic course at Penn State; and (3) a post-seminar online component (estimated 7 hours), July 7- 12; for 81 hours total. The broad outcome at which we aim is to contribute to the national effort to expand instructional capacity in critical languages, including Arabic. More specifically, by the end of the program, participants will have demonstrated their abilities to plan and successfully present standards-based learning experiences in the target language; and through final portfolios they will also have demonstrated a mindset for transfer of their STARTALK learning and a knowledge of career pathways, including certification or further degrees where relevant.

    At the conclusion of the program, our students will have the necessary linguistic and cultural skills to interact with Arabic speakers on basic, everyday topics, especially the topic of food. We will recruit 20 students to participate in this intensive Arabic program. Our participants will be high school and college students (grades 9-16). Their proficiency level in Arabic will be Novice-High by the conclusion of the program. We will conduct about 94 instructional hours throughout a four-week period, to extend from July 2nd to July 26th, 2019.

    Summary

    The Exploring the Madina STARTALK program engages students across communicative modes in intercultural contexts. These competencies are respectively honed in the social spheres of the home, university, coffeeshop, and marketplace classrooms; all of which comprise daily life in the madina ‘city’. Successful completers will be able to demonstrate level appropriate (ACTFL novice) proficiency, such as reading authentic simple ads and menus, and writing short autobiographies. They showcase proficiency at the end of the program by undergoing individual interviews based on Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) benchmarks, composing menus and performing unscripted skits in Arabic that are centered around the coffeehouse, a place that represents a unique social and cultural hub in Arabic speaking societies. Approximately 20 students with little knowledge of Arabic reach the novice level over the course of 4 weeks (95 instruction hours).

    Summary

    The STARTALK 2019 program Preparing Arabic Teachers of Tomorrow goal is to prepare 20 Arabic teachers to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to complete the certification process with Michigan Teachers of Tomorrow Program. Participants who are already certified will receive up on approval 80 SCECHs State Continues Education Clock Hours toward the renewal of their certificates. The program will provide solid professional development workshops connecting theory to practice and implementing best practices using the STARTALK Endorsed-Principles in teaching Arabic as a world language in K-12 U.S. schools. The program also aims to advance teachers professional skills and knowledge to maintain their professional certification. The two-week program will offer 85 instructional hours including a pre-program segment viewing selected STARTALK online workshops followed by discussions, workshops, and micro teaching sessions. The micro teaching sessions will allow teachers to apply and practice learned teaching strategies in real classroom setting and with 30 school students.
