    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Summer Bridging Academies in Portland offer a three-week intensive language and culture learning experience for 90 K-5 students of Mandarin Chinese and 45 K-5 students of Russian who are currently enrolled in Portland Public Schools’ Dual Language Immersion programs, will be entering grade K, or plan late entry into a program in fall 2017. The Academies provide 90 hours of instruction based on the theme of “Bridging” physical spaces, as presented in a STEAM curriculum focused on bridge design and engineering, and on bridging spaces between culture and people, embodied by song, dance and martial arts or gymnastics. Student outcomes target a one proficiency level, from Novice to Intermediate and, for struggling students, a boost going into the school year. A separate four-week Academy for 24 High School students of Mandarin offers 90 hours of instruction through a blended online/community based curriculum meant to move them from Intermediate to Advanced proficiency, providing a “bridge” from High School to a university Flagship language program. As part of a combined STARTALK program that additionally offers a Teacher Academy, students will be exposed to a curriculum infused by the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching and Learning and help solidify Portland Public Schools contribution to a pipeline of students enrolled in the study of critical languages.

    Summary

    “STARTALK: Bridges to Russia” is a three-week intensive Russian language for heritage speakers program for high school students (20 participants). The theme of the program is personal and family stories in the broader context of Russian history of the 20th century. The linguistic focus of this program is reading and writing proficiency. Our students will also be involved in community service: they will interview the residents of a nearby retirement home and show to them their final projects (digital story telling – in collaboration with Harvard Art Museum) /performance (theater). This year, we will offer professional development seminar to our instructors.

    Summary

    The theme of the program will be "Preparation for a Business Trip to Russia," focusing on giving students the necessary skills for a successful business trip to Russia by providing learner-centered language instruction using topics and situations related to students' professional goals. This theme will help students explore the use of the Russian language in the professional environment, learn about contemporary business opportunities in Russia, and understand the norms that are prevalent in Russian business culture today. The duration of the program is three weeks, for a total of ninety instructional hours and will be offered to local high school students and UCF undergraduate students, with a target enrollment of fifty participants. The participants will be divided into two groups of Novice­ Low to Novice-Mid level, with the latter group providing more in-depth content for returning STARTALK participants and those with some knowledge of the target language. The resource materials for future STARTALK Russian language programs will be developed and shared in the future publication series continuing " Picturing Russia: A Research Guide to Russian Culture" and "Language and Culture of doing Business in Russia".

    Summary

    Discover Russian is a four-week introduction to Russian language and culture course that will be offered by American Councils for International Education and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), to 24 rising 6th-12th graders at TJHSST’s campus in Fairfax County, Virginia. The program fosters interest in Russian language and culture among students with and without access to Russian programs in their schools and/or communities by offering two levels of classes: Level One for those new to Russian and Level Two for those with prior Russian language experience. Although placement will be determined by language proficiency and not age, differentiation will occur to accommodate students’ varying rates of learning and levels of maturity. Classes will meet for six hours each day for 19 days, for a total of 114 hours of immersion instruction. Participants in Level One will reach Novice-Mid level proficiency by program’s end, while those in Level Two will attain Novice-High and sometimes Intermediate Low.

    Summary

    This program is a four-week intensive program that is designed to move students forward in their Russian language proficiency development. It incorporates learners from grades 3-12 from the Novice to the Intermediate-low levels. In grades 3-6, the students experience a content-related FLES program that introduces them to Russian language and culture. In grades 7-12, students are placed according to their previous learning experience in level 1-3 classes. There will be approximately five students at the elementary level and twenty at the middle/high school levels for a total of 51 instructional hours for elementary and 105 hours for secondary students. The program will run from June 28- July 21, 2017.

    Summary

    STARTALK 2017 -PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS IN RUSSIAN, a second-year Russian four-week summer program to be held June 26 – July 21, 2016 at the United States Naval Academy (USNA), will focus on developing and expanding communicative competence and cultural awareness in midshipmen at the Naval Academy and students from nearby Anne Arundel Community College (AACC). The program will meet for 6.5 hours per day for 20 days (a total of 130 instructional hours) and will offer four weeks of intensive Russian instruction at the Novice-Mid level. Participants will be 20 students who will have completed two semesters of Russian either at USNA or AACC. They will work on developing their Russian for future professional and personal development. The outcomes of the program are: successful completion of the course and continued pursuit of formal and informal study of Russian.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Teacher Program, “Preparing Language Teachers for the 21st Century,” will prepare 10 native (or near native) speakers of Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, or Russian to teach in a standards and content-based program, focused on developing communicative proficiency and accuracy in students learning these languages and on integrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) into language instruction. The program is designed to teach participants the STARTALK principles and standards-based language teaching and curriculum development, as well as the content knowledge needed to pass the Washington Educator Skills Test – Endorsement (WEST-E) for World Languages. Teachers will be able to work toward obtaining a P-12 World Language Endorsement for teaching these languages in Washington K-12 public schools. The program also provides scholarship assistance to complete the required assessments (WEST-E and ACTFL OPIc and WPT). In 2017, the 75-hour program will offer six UW credits of EDC&I 495 from the University of Washington College of Education and will run from June 19, 2017 through July 21, 2017 with both online and in-person components.

    Summary

    The Virginia Beach Summer STARTALK Academies seek to provide easily accessible, free opportunities for critical language and culture learning to young students throughout the school division, reflecting the diverse learners in our community. 45 rising fifth grade students will be selected by lottery for the Chinese language strand and 30 for the Russian strand; participants from last summer’s program will be invited to attend advanced classes. The program will be held from June 26 to July 20, 2017, Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM -12:00 PM (minus July 4th) totaling 62 instructional hours with the field trip. In addition, after-school Post-Sessions are planned to extend student cultural knowledge and language proficiency.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Summer Bridging Academy for Teachers coupled with the STARTALK K-5 Bridging Academy and High School Online Bridging Academy in Portland offers total of 22 K-12 Mandarin and Russian dual language immersion teachers and aspiring educators the ideal opportunity to bridge pedagogical theory, best practices and real world application. Over 48 hours of training, reflection and evaluation and 90 hours of actual integrated content and language instruction, participants gain critical professional knowledge and skills in immersion pedagogy while collectively building a professional culture of continuous improvement anchored in a data driven learning cycle. Current teachers can earn continuing education credits toward licensure renewal. Dual Language Teacher Fellows enrolled in a Portland Public Schools and Portland State University collaborative alternative licensure program (Portland Dual Language Teacher Fellows) gain significant experience and training as part of their required course work towards full licensure and a masters degree. Aspiring Educators, highly bilingual high school and college students, also receive an invaluable opportunity to be mentored and develop skills and knowledge about working with children.

    Summary

    Arizona State University provides an intensive, 3-week, non-residential program in elementary Russian for 24 students from 8--12th grade, bringing them to Novice Mid proficiency in speaking, listening, and reading.

    STARTALK students work in small groups in intensive face-to-face sessions on the campus of Arizona State University and, in video sessions with faculty and students from Arizona’s concurrently running Russian language study-abroad program in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

    Students use their online sessions to Bishkek to "preview" a study-abroad program they could join in 2018, to meet host families, talk to instructors and students, and to go on "virtual excursions" to the city.

    By the end of the program, students set up their own plan for a 2018 visit to Bishkek, choosing a host family, setting up an excursion schedule, etc.
