    Pitt STARTALK will be administered by the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian and East European Studies (REES) and offer an intensive four-week residential program from June 17 to July 13, 2018, with 160 formal and informal instructional hours for 20 students entering grades 10 through 12. REES is partnering with three high schools that offer academic year Russian language programs (Pittsburgh Brashear High School, Pritzker College Prep, and The Noble Academy) to recruit participants. The curriculum will be based on the theme “Soon to Russia!”, through which the Pitt STARTALK students will prepare to spend an academic year studying abroad in Russia. Instruction will be performance-based and emphasize acquisition of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, with a goal of ACTFL Novice Mid to Novice High proficiency across modalities for students in Russian I and Intermediate Low proficiency for students in Russian II. Other anticipated outcomes include increased cultural knowledge and college readiness.

    Summary

    The 2018 STARTALK Denton ISD intensive Russian and Chinese Summer School, Welcome to My World, will provide four weeks and 120 instructional hours of student-centered learning and instruction in Russian and Chinese respectively to 11th and 12th graders and UNT undergraduate students at the Novice level.

    Upon the successful completion of the summer school, our students will achieve Novice level of language proficiency in Russian or Chinese respectively, will be able to communicate appropriately at the Novice level and will enhance their cultural awareness.

    We believe that the additional benefit of earning up to six college credit hours through a College placement test free of charge and the opportunity to become part of our UNT learning community will encourage the program participants to continue their studies of Russian or Chinese in college.

    Summary

    Discover Russian is a four-week introduction to Russian language and culture course that will be offered by American Councils for International Education and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) to 30 rising 8th-12th graders at TJHSST’s campus in Fairfax County, Virginia. The program fosters interest in Russian language and culture among students with and without access to Russian programs in their schools and/or communities by offering three class levels: Novice-Mid for those new to Russian and Novice-High and Intermediate Low for those with prior Russian language experience. Although placement will be determined by language proficiency and not age, differentiation will occur to accommodate students’ varying rates of learning and levels of maturity. Classes will meet seven hours each day for 18 days, for a total of 126 hours of immersion instruction. Participants in Level One will reach Novice-Mid level proficiency by the program’s end, while those in Level Two will attain Novice-High, and those in Level Three will reach Intermediate Low.

    Summary

    Arizona State University (ASU) will provide an intensive, 3-week, 4.5-classroom-hour/day, non-residential program in elementary Russian for 28 participants in grades 8-12 from Central Arizona, bringing them from proficiency 0 to Novice Mid in speaking, listening, and reading. STARTALK participants will work in small groups in intensive sessions designed and provided by the STARTALK team on the campus of ASU and, by video uplink, with the faculty, activity guides, and host families of the concurrently running Russian language program in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in ASU’s Critical Languages Institute (CLI). Having STARTALK participants interact with CLI Russian students, in both domestic and abroad programs, is part of the larger strategy of academic mentoring intended to steer participants into the Central Arizona Russian Proficiency pipeline -- a network of high-school instructors and advisors, state university advisors and instructors, and CLI career and grant advisors who work one-on-one with participants to plot out pathways from STARTALK to high-school Russian, to NSLI-Y, to college Russian and CLS or CLI, to summer and semester-long study abroad with NSEP, Fulbright, or private funding, with the goal of supporting participants through to advanced or superior levels of Russian by the time they receive their BA. Bringing together faculty and staff from Arizona school districts’ Russian programs, ASU’s Russian program, and ASU’s summer intensive program at CLI, ASU’s Russian STARTALK program will serve as a hub for Russian instruction and Russian study-abroad programs in Central Arizona and the southwest.

    Summary

    The theme of the program will be "Preparation for a Business Trip to Russia," focusing on Russian language and cultural understanding in the business world for future business leaders which gives students the necessary skills for a successful trip to Russia by providing learner-centered language instruction using topics and situations related to students' professional goals. This theme will help students explore the use of the Russian language in the professional environment, learn about contemporary business opportunities in Russia, and understand the norms that are prevalent in Russian business culture today. The duration of the program is three weeks, for a total of ninety instructional hours and will be offered to local high school students and UCF undergraduate students, with a target enrollment of fifty participants. The participants will be divided into three groups of Novice Low to Novice-Mid level, with the latter group providing more in-depth content for returning STARTALK participants and those with some knowledge of the target language. The resource materials for future STARTALK Russian language programs will be developed and shared in the future language conferences and publication series continuing " Picturing Russia: A Research Guide to Russian Culture" and "Language and Culture of doing Business in Russia".

    Summary

    Speak and Connect is a three-week summer language program designed to introduce 50 high school students to Arabic, Portuguese and Russian language. They will be divided into five groups of 10. The program will have two sections for Arabic, two sections for Portuguese and one section for Russian. Selected students will participate in 90 hours of language instruction. Summer language acquisition will be maintained and expanded during the subsequent school year through participation in virtual and face-to-face language and cultural awareness sessions. Upon completion of the program students will have developed a novice/mid level of Arabic, Portuguese and Russian.

    Summary

    The Pushkin Summer Institute (PSI) at UW-Madison attracts academically serious high school students from underrepresented communities to its intensive 6-week program in Russian. PSI offers 25-30 hours of intensive classroom instruction weekly, in addition to a well developed, integrated extracurricular program that allows students to put their Russian skills into practice in a variety of situations. PSI participants will be 30 rising juniors and seniors with at least one year of Russian instruction from secondary schools with majority Latino and/or African-American populations: Pritzker College Prep and The Noble Academy (Chicago, IL); we will also recruit from among economically disadvantaged minority students at Friends School (Baltimore). Our target proficiency goals are to advance students from Novice Mid to Novice High (in speaking, listening, writing) and Intermediate Low (in reading). Upon returning to their schools, students continue Russian instruction and act as mentors to their fellow students; the PSI Abroad in Latvia, our NSLI-Y project, allows PSI alumni to study in a six-week Russian-language immersion program in the summer after their STARTALK experience.

    The Mandarin Chinese and Russian Student Academy is a four-week residential immersion program in the summer at Kent State’s main campus. Housed in the university's state-of-the-art Honors College, the Mandarin Chinese and Russian Academy will serve two cohorts of 10 new learners of Mandarin Chinese and Russian, targeting rising high school juniors and seniors. The program offers 235 instructional hours over four weeks in the summer and involves a mandatory academic year follow-up component. Proficiency-based outcomes assessment and tracking of graduates will measure the success of the program in fostering success and persistence in the study of the Mandarin Chinese and Russian language.

    Summary

    “STARTALK: Bridges to Russia: Culture and Social Studies” is a four-week (100 hours) intensive Russian language program for heritage speakers of Intermediate High and Advanced Low levels of proficiency, who attend high schools in the US (20 participants). The theme of the program is personal and family stories in the broader context of Russian history of the 20th century with the linguistic focus on reading and writing proficiency. Our students will be involved in community service at the local retirement home, where they will conduct a series of interviews with the Russian-speaking residents and show to them their final projects (digital story telling – in collaboration with Harvard Art Museum) /performance (theater) /Editorial Room (newspaper writing). This year, we will offer to our instructors a four-day comprehensive professional development seminar on STARTALK principals, lesson planning and teaching techniques.

    Summary

    This program is a four-week intensive program that is designed to move students forward in their Russian language proficiency development. It incorporates learners from grades 3-12 from the Novice to the Intermediate-low levels. In grades 3-6, the students experience a content-related FLES program that introduces them to Russian language and culture. In grades 7-12, students are placed according to their previous learning experience in level 1-3 classes. There will be approximately five students at the elementary level and twenty at the middle/high school levels for a total of 51 instructional hours for elementary and 102 hours for secondary students. The program will run from June 27-July 20, 2018.
