    Join us for an exciting 15-day intensive, non-residential program to learn Mandarin language and Chinese culture!

    The 2019 STARTALK STEAM-Infused Intensive Chinese Summer Program for 30 high school and college students in the Triad Piedmont areas of North Carolina, providing national standards-based language and culture instruction, preparing the young generation with essential and critical language skills in the 21st century for an ever-changing world. It offers intensive Chinese language learning opportunities for literacy learning and cultural understanding.

    No prior Chinese language experience is necessary. The program is FREE for qualified candidates with a $50 application fee.

    Summary

    The STARTALK: Queens University of Charlotte Summer Institute in Chinese and Arabic is a three-week, 90 hour non-residential language immersion program for rising 7th - 12th graders that takes place from 9:00AM to 3:00PM July 22nd to August 9th with free snack and low-cost lunch provided. Student-centered learning will occur in an immersion setting using a variety of authentic materials and supporting technologies that will prepare students to engage in meaningful intercultural communication centered around our theme of "Holidays and Celebrations." Students will develop proficiency from the Novice to Intermediate levels and the skills and motivation to become involved in post-program community activities offered by Queens and our community partners. Approximately 64 students will be admitted to Chinese and 32 to Arabic in a competitive application process that does not require prior knowledge of the language. Undergraduate credit (4 hours) is granted upon successful program completion; the program may be repeated at a higher level for 4 additional credits if sufficient progress is made.

    Summary

    Appalachian State University (App State), located in Boone, North Carolina, will offer a three-week, residential, intensive student program from July 8 to July 26, 2019. The culturally rich and academically rigorous Chinese program is designed for 20 rising 9th-12th-grade students with limited or no previous exposure to Chinese from the high schools in the High Country of North Carolina. Focusing on the theme of “The High Country Meets the Middle Kingdom,” the program will offer a total of 253 contact hours in structured language learning. Upon the completion of the program, students will reach “Novice Low/Mid” proficiency in all modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational).

    Summary

    The STARTALK Multi-State Pathways to Teaching Institute focuses on closing the gap for heritage school teachers by creating a Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) to earn state certification in order to be placed during the 2019-2020 school year in a K-12 public school classroom as an alternative entry or provisionally licensed teacher. This teacher training program recruits and supports up to 50 prospective teachers in 10 targeted STARTALK languages to address the critical need for K-12 language programs in Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia, as well as a limited number of Spanish teachers to serve in dual language/immersion programs in those states. The Institute design includes 75 hours of instruction delivered online and face-to-face in four stages through a variety of learning experiences: Stage 1 Pre-Institute (6 hours online; June 12-July 17); Stage 2 Summer Institute (45 hours on-site; July 24-31); Stage 3 Post-Institute (24 hours over a seven-month period, August 2019 - February 2020); and finally Stage 4 Extended Institute (additional individual work as needed to complete certification requirements, will be outlined in each participant’s PLP). This Institute ensures that teachers are coached and prepared to meet the licensing requirements of the state where they will be teaching and enter the classroom as effective educators with the skills to plan, deliver, and assess instruction using the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles.

    Summary

    The PDS STARTALK Student Program is a grant-funded (free to participants) ​face-to-face, non-residential 3-week, Chinese language program for rising 6th graders through rising college freshman in the greater Charlotte, N.C. area. The program theme, "Student Life in Charlotte and Shanghai" will allow students to interact with their peers and teachers in a variety of familiar ways related to topics that are relevant to their day-to-day lives. Within this theme, students will explore and variety of aspects of school life in Shanghai for students their age, and will be able to reflect on their own experience here in Charlotte. In addition to classroom experiences, the program will include a field trip in which students will be able to apply their new knowledge in multiple settings, experiencing Chinese culture right in their own backyards! On the final day, there will be a shared celebration of student learning where students will show off all of their new language and cultural knowledge to their parents, siblings and friends!

    Summary

    The Providence Day School (PDS) Chinese Teacher Program is a face-to-face non-residential 70 hour intensive teacher training program. It is designed as a comprehensive introduction to current research-backed practices in Chinese language teaching and Second Language Acquisition (including the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles for Effective Teaching & Learning) through practical, hands-on learning experiences. Teacher participants will learn from a team of experienced world language teachers and teacher-trainers as well as work collaboratively with peers to experience, interpret, discuss and apply best practices in world language instruction. They will participate in a variety of activities designed to equip them with new tools to deliver more effective student-centered lessons in their classrooms. ​As their final product in the teacher training program, each teacher will create a collection of culturally-rich, student-centered lesson plans and accompanying materials to take back to their yearlong classrooms.
