    Summary

    LARC-SDSU is offering a 2-week (80 hrs.) residential teacher training program through the STARTALK summer program for returning secondary and post-secondary teachers of Arabic, Chinese, Dari, and Persian.
    During the first week of the program, the teacher participants will attend presentations, participate in discussions, see live models, and work on hands-on group activities to develop knowledge about effective teaching and learning practices. The main focus of the program will be on Content-based Instruction in a Learner-Centered classroom.
    During the second week, the teacher participants will put their gained knowledge into practice. They will prepare teaching materials and teach actual students, multiple times. The participants will receive feedback from the lead teacher, peers, and students on how to improve their instruction.
    At the end of the program, successful participants will earn three graduate-level college units. Interested participants will attend an additional 40 hours of continuing teacher education (onsite/online) offered by SAILN, a wing of the California World Language Project (CWLP) and will become fellows of CWLP. The participants will also learn about the steps that are involved in becoming a credential teacher in the state of California.

    Summary

    This program will offer 60 elementary students and exciting and fun science-oriented summer immersion three-week experience. It is open to K-5 students in San Mateo County, California. Students will be divided into three classes of 20 students based on their grade levels (K-1, 2-3, 4-5). At the end of the program, students will be able to communicate with each other, their family, and members of the community, in Chinese. In addition to engaging in hands-on fun science activities related to the exploration of DNA and genetics, field trips will give the students the opportunity to visit a real science laboratory at Stanford University and to meet with other scientists, and all the students will be able to bring home with them a sample of DNA that they isolated themselves from strawberries as well as a life-long love of and interest in science.

    The Chinese Guest Teacher Summer Institute program will prepare approximately 115 newly arrived visiting Chinese teachers for upcoming teaching assignments in U.S. elementary and secondary schools. After completing 60 instructional hours of sessions, hands-on activities, and microteaching in the 10-day program, participants will gain a realistic understanding of the expectations in U.S. K-12 schools. Participants will develop skills and strategies for classroom management, teaching in the target language, using the Understanding by Design (UbD) approach for lesson plan creation, and communicating with U.S. students, parents, and colleagues. A secondary group of 10 veteran guest teachers will serve as mentors to improve their own teaching and leadership skills.

    Summary

    This one-week 40-hour program is designed for experienced teachers of all STARTALK languages. Selected participants will have had successful experiences in STARTALK and other similar world language professional learning programs and are at the point in their careers where they are ready to assume leadership roles in their schools, districts, professional organizations and in the STARTALK community. It is expected that they will have a solid understanding of the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles for Teaching and Learning Languages, World Readiness Standards for Language Learning and substantial experience in applying the principles and concepts featured in these documents into effective classroom practices. A sub-set of returning participants from the previous year program will be invited to participate and increase the leadership skills and experience by observing and reporting other programs in the CLTA/CWLP Summer Seminar as well as mentoring their peers who are participating in the program for the first time. All participants will complete a TELL self-assessment prior to arriving at the institute to create a baseline profile of their professional competencies along the TELL domains continua. At the end of the program they will be able to plan and present a professional presentation on a topic selected from the TELL domains and facilitate different aspects of a successful and learner-centered professional learning activity. They will apply knowledge gained from presentation, discussing activities on the following topics: exploration of diverse leadership styles, advocacy, coping with change, coaching and mentoring, strategies for successful and engaging presentations and censuses building and group dynamics with the STARTALK principles integrated throughout. As they participate in the program, they will develop their own professional leadership development plan and will be supported in its implementation beyond the end of the program.

    Summary

    LARC-SDSU will offer a four-week (non-residential) Arabic, Chinese, Dari, and Persian STARTALK summer program for 10 heritage students in each camp (total 40) from July 10th to August 4th, 2017. These programs will be available to students in grades 9-12 with at least advanced (oral) and intermediate (reading and writing) levels of proficiency.
    Through a thematic curriculum and content-based instruction, students will learn about the history of their native country. This immersion program will increase students’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills by at least one sub-level. The program will also enhance students’ cultural competence in their heritage language and culture. While teachers facilitate the classes, students will be active participants who must take ownership of their learning. Through the use of authentic materials, they will conduct research and demonstrate their understanding through in-class discussions, presentations, writing summaries, and developing portfolios.

    The proposed program will take place from July 5th through July 28th) and is designed for beginning (Novice Level) Mandarin language and culture middle school students from diverse cultural backgrounds, especially Latino students. The curriculum centers on the literary text, "A Rocket Ship Trip to the Moon" and focuses on providing non-heritage students with a content and culture-rich learning environment where they acquire essential Chinese linguistic functions and cultural features to explore our STEM/STEAM sub-theme and prepares them to perform at a higher level of confidence and competence when they enroll in a Mandarin course in middle or high school in the fall of 2017. The curricula will be delivered via interactive instructional strategies that engage students in the learning process and will be differentiated to address the diverse learning abilities and learning styles of the participants. Both formative and summative assessment strategies will be employed to assess student performance, including student self-assessment and the completion of group projects that demonstrate that the students can apply their new content knowledge related to the fields of STEM/STEM as well as their Chinese language and culture skills to accomplish real-world tasks.

    Summary

    The LMU 2017 Mandarin Teacher Summer Institute will continue to respond to the demand for highly qualified teachers of Chinese by providing support and resources through the provision of two pathways for teacher preparation: 1) The continuing graduate-level Mandarin language credential, and 2) the Certificate in Teaching Mandarin in PreK-12 Settings. Pathway 1: Credential program outcomes include: 1) recruiting and admitting highly qualified K-12 Chinese language teacher candidates for entrance into the secondary or multiple subjects requirements and master's degree program; 2) Supporting Summer Institute participants in passing state testing requirements; 3) Providing 2 cohorts of teacher candidates (21 total) with 6 units of graduate-level coursework applicable to their credentials and masters. The credential program offers 110 hours of coursework, independent work and clinical practice for graduate credit. Pathway 2 is the Certificate in Teaching Chinese in Pre-K – 12 Settings with a targeted enrollment of 13 participants (5 new and 8 returning) who teach in heritage or other programs. Pathway 2 participants complete a hybrid course-series offered through LMU Extension for up to 12 continuing education units of credit (120 professional development credit hours). Upon completion of this second Summer Institute Pathway, participants will: 1) Expand knowledge of content-based Mandarin language and literacy, with a focus on the arts and movement education (Content-based Language Instruction and Curriculum Development in Mandarin); 2) Incorporate research-based practices in assessment linked to instruction (Assessment Basics and Oral Proficiency); 3) Apply new skills in content instruction in Mandarin and engage in reflection about their practices (Practicum in Teaching Mandarin); and 4) Deepen knowledge and skill in teaching Chinese grammar (Chinese Grammar Pedagogy course).

    Summary

    The CAIS STARTALK K-8 Chinese Teacher Training Program will provide twelve teacher participants with the fundamentals for instruction in a Chinese language classroom. This intensive one week training for teachers will facilitate high quality Chinese language programming in their schools. Teacher participants will learn the critical skills they need to be innovative and successful in the classroom during the forty hours of instructional time which have a focus of in class practicums built into the program design. They will build and evaluate curriculum, integrate culture into their language program, develop performance based assessments, and access authentic teaching tools and resources. Through hands-on classroom teaching, participants will interact with real students studying Chinese in CAIS student program.

    CLASSRoad’s STARTALK 2017 fully-online program will provide opportunity for thirty-five (35) intermediate and master Arabic, Chinese and Persian language teachers to focus on TELL Learning Experience Domain criteria LE 4c and LE 4e, building their ability to provide meaningful learning experiences and advance student learning through the use of a variety of strategies to make language comprehensible, and by frequently checking for understanding in a variety of ways throughout a lesson, while staying in the target language for 90% of instructional time. The highly collaborative program will include real time interaction among instructors and participants, feature live and video presentations by experts, formative assessments, discussions, observations of recorded online language teaching examples (including video from previous year teacher participants), peer learning and feedback, peer microteaching practice, online co-teaching to remote language students, and self-assessment and personal growth plan development. The four-week program (80 contact hours) will feature three weeks of module-based daily instruction and online collaborative group work, including several days of peer microteaching and preparation, followed by a fourth week that involves instruction to remote novice language students, along with peer observation, personal reflection and professional planning. The program will be delivered using the online learning management system Canvas and the web-conference platform Adobe Connect, allowing for adaptive design, improved mobile accessibility, the giving of timely feedback, and the course to be structured in an innovative and highly interactive manner. Note: this is not a self-paced program for teachers to complete independently, but a highly interactive online course that includes collaborative online peer group work throughout the course.

    Summary

    The purpose of the CAIS STARTALK Elementary Immersion Program is to provide continuity for retention, enhanced learning, and reinforcement of Chinese language and culture skills to a constituency of San Francisco Unified School District and student who are studying in similar immersion models that would otherwise not be able to access such an opportunity. As a result of participating in the summer program, students will be confident of their language capabilities and enjoy learning about Chinese culture in a fun environment. Students who have been identified as struggling during the school year have the chance to reinforce their learning. We are targeting twelve students per grade, 1st to 5th grade inclusive for two three-week sessions for a total of one hundred fifty students and two hundred and ten instructional hours.
