    Summary

    The 2-week residential teacher training program, preceded by 2-week pre-program online training and followed by 1-week offsite practicum, aims to train 12 teachers to learn to teach Mandarin Chinese to 9-12 graders online. Trainees will earn up to five graduate credits in "Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language" that offers 126 instructional hours. The integration of both theory and practice will be delivered through a blended instructional model before, during, and after the program. The program ensures quality instruction and guides trainees to achieve three goals: 1) to effectively implement world-readiness standards in thematic and curricular design and STARTALK endorsed principles for effective ONLINE teaching, 2) to strengthen their observation and practicum experience in ONLINE teaching, and 3) to further their pursuit of teaching certification for career advancement in teaching Mandarin Chinese through different modalities. The capstone in the development of trainees’ competence will be the completion of an Eportfolio that documents UVA STARTALK Fellows’ extensive learning experiences in launching or advancing their careers in teaching Mandarin Chinese courses. UVA STARTALK Fellows will enjoy free lodging and food at the hometown of the 3rd US president, Thomas Jefferson and receive travel reimbursement up to $600 upon the completion of the program.     The STARTALK-Penn Chinese Language Teacher Advancement Program is a teacher enrichment program to provide STARTALK-approved training to fifteen K-16 Chinese language teachers for career advancement. Held at the beautiful campus of University of Pennsylvania, this two-week, 63 instructional hour face-to-face program will be from July 21 to August 2nd, 2019 each day from 9 am to 4 pm. The program will offer Penn expert discussions on China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China's history of interactions in Central Eurasia, nationalism and Chinese minorities, ecological and environmental issues relating to the BRI, as well as pedagogy training, material development and micro-teaching. The program also features video editing training, a field trip to a Philadelphia high school and workshop in the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. This partial residential program offers travel funds to 10 STARTALK participants to cover housing for 10 out-of-state participants during the program; Pennsylvania participants will receive ACT 48 hours toward re-certification and career advancement. After the program, participating teachers will have new teaching materials that are World-Readiness Standard-based with innovative culture content and technology components, to use in the new school year. Experiences gained from this Belt & Road Initiative themed program will open great opportunities for language teachers to connect the subject to K-12 courses, such as Economics, World History, World Geography, Environment Study, Arts and Music appreciation course.

    Summary

    The North Central College Chinese program will provide a STARTALK teacher program for 12 teachers of Mandarin Chinese from weekend Chinese schools. This program, focusing on equipping participants with strategies and tools in selecting and applying authentic materials in Chinese language classrooms, is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online formats. The program, with a total instructional time of over 90 hours, combines a 10-day face-to-face workshop and 5-day online modules, to guide participants to use authentic materials and apply effective teaching strategies in unit and lesson planning. To ensure the continued support for participants’ application of training content, two post- program reunion and sharing activities are designed during the fall and winter. The expected outcomes are that participants are able to select age-appropriate authentic materials for their lessons, scaffold student learning through effective teaching strategies and tools, and develop performance-based assessments using authentic materials.

    The STARTALK Summer Bridging Academy for Teachers coupled with the STARTALK K-5 Bridging Academy in Portland offers total of 35 K-5 Chinese and Russian dual language immersion teachers and aspiring educators the ideal opportunity to bridge pedagogical theory, best practices and real world application. Over 60 hours of training, reflection and evaluation and 72 hours of actual integrated content and language instruction, participants gain critical professional knowledge and skills in immersion pedagogy while collectively building a professional culture of continuous improvement anchored in a data driven learning cycle. Current teachers can earn continuing education credits toward licensure renewal. Dual Language Teacher Residents enrolled in a Portland Public Schools and Oregon State University collaborative alternative licensure program (Portland Dual Language Teacher Residents) gain significant experience and training as part of their required course work towards full licensure and a masters degree. Aspiring Educators, highly bilingual high school and college students, also receive an invaluable opportunity to be mentored and develop skills and knowledge about working with children.

    Assessment is critical to language teaching, and proficiency-based assessment can have positive influences on curriculum planning and implementation. The ACTFL MOPI workshop provides an opportunity for instructors to learn how to assess their students' oral proficiency and reflect on realistic outcomes for their students.

    This program will enroll 20 participants who teach in higher education, with a variety of language teaching experiences and backgrounds. Participants will learn about the ACTFL Guidelines and how to apply these for goal-setting, assessment and self-assessment to improve teaching and learning, The first part of the workshop is an online course that provides a background on the ACTFL Guidelines and ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview. The second part is a face-to-face workshop on the ACTFL OPI and a focus on classroom applications. The third part involves regular follow-up with participants during Fall 2019 and Winter 2020 on the influences of the workshop on teaching, learning and assessment.

    Participants will accrue approximately 35 hours, including up to 10-14 pre-session hours, 21 hours during the face-to-face workshop and 4-6 hours in completing the surveys and follow on interviews.

    Summary

    The CAIS STARTALK K-8 Chinese Teacher Training Program will provide twelve teacher participants with the fundamentals for instruction in a Chinese language classroom. This intensive one week training for teachers will facilitate high quality Chinese language programming in their schools. Teacher participants will learn the critical skills they need to be innovative and successful in the classroom during the forty hours of instructional time which have a focus of in class practicums built into the program design. They will build and evaluate curriculum, integrate culture into their language program, develop performance based assessments, and access authentic teaching tools and resources. Through hands-on classroom teaching, participants will interact with real students studying Chinese in CAIS student program.

    The STARTALK Performance Assessment Training Program at the Center for Applied Linguistics uses a blended online and face-to-face format to train up to 40 STARTALK educators representing all grade and experience levels and STARTALK languages on the fundamentals of performance-based assessment within the STARTALK context. The program will consist of seven online modules, two webinars, and a three-day face-to-face workshop for a total of 41 instructional hours over the course of 7 continuous weeks.

    Participants who complete the program will develop performance assessment tasks, adapt rating rubrics, create self-assessment tools for students, and create a standards- and curriculum-based assessment plan with performance objectives. Participants will be prepared to continue to develop these tools and integrate best practices in assessment with best practices in instruction into their teaching. After active instruction ends, the online modules will remain available as a continued reference and for sharing materials and resources.

    This blended STARTALK program will be a residential summer institute (8 days) with a pre-institute (8 days) asynchronous online module for 20 secondary Chinese language teachers, totaling 60 contact hours. The primary focus of the program is developing professional and program sustainability through the incorporation of effective and engaging learner-centered educational technology. Participants will work with experts and master teachers to learn both theory and practice in three different strands: flipped learning, multi-media learning, and learning outside of the classroom. Most travel expenses and all meals and lodging are covered by the program. Optional three graduate credit hours in Teacher Education are available at the participant's expense.     Summary

    The LMU 2019 Mandarin Teacher Summer Institute (June –August 2019) responds to the demand for highly qualified teachers of Chinese by providing support and resources through two pathway options for teacher preparation: Pathway 1: Credential with Bilingual Authorization in Mandarin, and Pathway 2: the Certificate in Teaching Mandarin professional development program. The program will take place between June 1-August 31, 2019, and includes an expected 36 participants. Pathway 1 (Credential) participants will complete at least six units of study and participate in microteaching and structured observation instruction in one of LMU’s 42 partner districts where they will apply knowledge gained on backward design, standards-based instruction, and differentiated instruction with technology integration (184 hours). Upon completion of the summer institute, STARTALK Pathway 1 participants will continue their course of study during the academic year to complete all remaining requirements for state credentialing in either elementary or secondary education with Mandarin Bilingual Authorization. Pathway 2 (Certificate) participants will participate in a 4-course professional development program (120 hours) to develop and deliver interdisciplinary, content-based language curriculum for 1st -4th grade students participating in the LMU two-week Elementary Mandarin Student Immersion program. Program completers will be prepared to serve as teachers/interns/volunteers in K-12 classrooms in one of LMU’s 42 partner districts.

    The STARTALK Multi-State Pathways to Teaching Institute focuses on closing the gap for heritage school teachers by creating a Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) to earn state certification in order to be placed during the 2019-2020 school year in a K-12 public school classroom as an alternative entry or provisionally licensed teacher. This teacher training program recruits and supports up to 50 prospective teachers in 10 targeted STARTALK languages to address the critical need for K-12 language programs in Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia, as well as a limited number of Spanish teachers to serve in dual language/immersion programs in those states. The Institute design includes 75 hours of instruction delivered online and face-to-face in four stages through a variety of learning experiences: Stage 1 Pre-Institute (6 hours online; June 12-July 17); Stage 2 Summer Institute (45 hours on-site; July 24-31); Stage 3 Post-Institute (24 hours over a seven-month period, August 2019 - February 2020); and finally Stage 4 Extended Institute (additional individual work as needed to complete certification requirements, will be outlined in each participant’s PLP). This Institute ensures that teachers are coached and prepared to meet the licensing requirements of the state where they will be teaching and enter the classroom as effective educators with the skills to plan, deliver, and assess instruction using the STARTALK-Endorsed Principles.
