    Summary

    The 2019 VSCSA program at the University of Virginia aims to provide a linguistically and culturally enriched online learning environment for 24 high school students who are rising 9th-12th graders in the Commonwealth of Virginia and other regions in the US. Students will embark on a 12-day virtual journey in Beijing from July 5 to July 18 in 2019 that concurs with the major time frame of the VSCTA teacher program. Upon the completion of the program, the learners will develop a positive “Can-Do” attitude and attain proficiency at the intermediate-low level according to ACTFL’s proficiency guidelines. Curricular requirements and lesson plans will be effectively implemented in alignment with the can-do statements across the three communicative modes specified in the online LinguiaFolio. The total instructional hours are 45 hours, including time committed to online orientation and synchronous and asynchronous online learning. The program features quality online learning that is made possible by research-endorsed best practices in language pedagogy and cutting-edge technology platform and tools. Learners have ample opportunities to engage in active learning that is intended to be fun, engaging, and motivating.     Summary

    The 2-week residential teacher training program, preceded by 2-week pre-program online training and followed by 1-week offsite practicum, aims to train 12 teachers to learn to teach Mandarin Chinese to 9-12 graders online. Trainees will earn up to five graduate credits in "Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language" that offers 126 instructional hours. The integration of both theory and practice will be delivered through a blended instructional model before, during, and after the program. The program ensures quality instruction and guides trainees to achieve three goals: 1) to effectively implement world-readiness standards in thematic and curricular design and STARTALK endorsed principles for effective ONLINE teaching, 2) to strengthen their observation and practicum experience in ONLINE teaching, and 3) to further their pursuit of teaching certification for career advancement in teaching Mandarin Chinese through different modalities. The capstone in the development of trainees’ competence will be the completion of an Eportfolio that documents UVA STARTALK Fellows’ extensive learning experiences in launching or advancing their careers in teaching Mandarin Chinese courses. UVA STARTALK Fellows will enjoy free lodging and food at the hometown of the 3rd US president, Thomas Jefferson and receive travel reimbursement up to $600 upon the completion of the program.     Summary

    The Mandarin Institute STARTALK PRE-AP Program will provide 100 students from across the US the opportunity to strengthen their Chinese language skills whether in preparation for an AP Chinese course or for those who just want to improve their Chinese. The online learning environment is powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that incorporates the best strategies for second language acquisition which makes learning Chinese more efficient, effective and engaging.

    Through the theme of Innovation and Invention, participants will learn about the Four Great Inventions of China (paper, gunpowder, printing, compass), compare and contrast American and Chinese ingenuity and progress through innovations to today's social media, and explore the impact of these innovations on our lives.

    Each day students will engage in 90 minutes of synchronous online instruction with a teacher and 3 other students in addition to ~ 2 hours of asynchronous learning which includes independent, pair and group projects. Upon completion of the 50-hour program, students will attain intermediate-mid to intermediate-high ACTFL proficiency level and will have exposure to AP content and instruction.

    * All applicants will be given a complimentary license to AI tools that enable comprehension of text and facilitate independent reading.

    Summary

    The 2019 STARTALK DCPS program will enroll 80 upper elementary and middle school DCPS and DC resident students in a 2-week language and culture program. The student program will run from July 1 through July 19 from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm for a total of 98 instructional hours. Students will be grouped by proficiency levels and will study the theme of Contemporary Life in China, looking at authentic materials focusing on (1) current events and contemporary issues, (2) current trends, and (3) popular culture. As a part of the program, DCPS will partner with local organizations and museums to bring authentic learning experiences to the students inside and outside of the classroom. Students will exit the program with both enhanced proficiency in Chinese and a deeper understanding of daily life in China that will pique their interest and set a strong foundation for future learning.

    The STARTALK-Penn Chinese Language Teacher Advancement Program is a teacher enrichment program to provide STARTALK-approved training to fifteen K-16 Chinese language teachers for career advancement. Held at the beautiful campus of University of Pennsylvania, this two-week, 63 instructional hour face-to-face program will be from July 21 to August 2nd, 2019 each day from 9 am to 4 pm. The program will offer Penn expert discussions on China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China's history of interactions in Central Eurasia, nationalism and Chinese minorities, ecological and environmental issues relating to the BRI, as well as pedagogy training, material development and micro-teaching. The program also features video editing training, a field trip to a Philadelphia high school and workshop in the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. This partial residential program offers travel funds to 10 STARTALK participants to cover housing for 10 out-of-state participants during the program; Pennsylvania participants will receive ACT 48 hours toward re-certification and career advancement. After the program, participating teachers will have new teaching materials that are World-Readiness Standard-based with innovative culture content and technology components, to use in the new school year. Experiences gained from this Belt & Road Initiative themed program will open great opportunities for language teachers to connect the subject to K-12 courses, such as Economics, World History, World Geography, Environment Study, Arts and Music appreciation course.

    ACA 2019 STARTALK Chinese Summer Camp: Earth is Our Home will provide 80 K-5 students at University Park Elementary School with a Chinese language, culture and STEM integrated learning program for 91 instructional hours over 3 weeks in summer (June 24, 2019 to July 11, 2019, field trip: July 12, 2019) and additional 20 hours in an extension program in fall 2019, a total of 111 instructional hours. Students will receive technology-enhanced language instruction organized about different weather conditions around the world when attending "Weather and Me" camp in China. After attending the program, students will be able to greet each other and exchange simple information in Chinese, and build lasting interest to continue with their Chinese learning.

    The West Virginia Department of Education, in partnership with Monongalia County Schools, will offer the STARTALK: WVDE Chinese Immersion Summer Camp program for 90 elementary students through a ten-day instructional summer program with follow-up activities throughout the year (approximately 90 hours of total instruction). Monongalia County students who will enroll in grades 1-5 will have the opportunity to engage in a thematic and content-based summer camp experience in Morgantown, WV. Students will develop or advance their initial Chinese proficiency as they engage with Mandarin speaking instructors and facilitators. The focus of the 2019 camp will be "Learning Chinese: It's out of this world!" Lessons and activities will focus on the solar system.

    North Central College proposes a student and teacher combination program for 2019. The student program will be a hybrid, 13-day, non-residential program with two levels of classes: the Level One (novice-mid) program being titled "Journey to China,” and the Level Two (novice-high) program, titled “Working Together with China.” Up to 20 high school students will be enrolled in the program, which will consist of eight hours of daily online or on-site instruction and activities, with some additional excursions and opportunities to practice learned skills for a total of 96 hours of instructional time. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will have earned a certificate and be able to demonstrate competence in the three modes of communication, as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL): interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational communication in Chinese.

    Summary

    The North Central College Chinese program will provide a STARTALK teacher program for 12 teachers of Mandarin Chinese from weekend Chinese schools. This program, focusing on equipping participants with strategies and tools in selecting and applying authentic materials in Chinese language classrooms, is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online formats. The program, with a total instructional time of over 90 hours, combines a 10-day face-to-face workshop and 5-day online modules, to guide participants to use authentic materials and apply effective teaching strategies in unit and lesson planning. To ensure the continued support for participants’ application of training content, two post- program reunion and sharing activities are designed during the fall and winter. The expected outcomes are that participants are able to select age-appropriate authentic materials for their lessons, scaffold student learning through effective teaching strategies and tools, and develop performance-based assessments using authentic materials.

    Summary

    This 3-week STARTALK CHINESE IMMERSION ACADEMY will engage 44 rising fifth and sixth graders with the theme "Disappearing Water" offering cognitively challenging science content, functional language and engaging activities as the anchor for language learning with authentic multi-disciplinary connections. During 90 instructional hours, non- heritage learners will progress toward novice-mid proficiency levels in the communication modes of listening and speaking with minimal focus on reading and writing. Heritage speakers will advance toward intermediate-low/mid proficiency level in listening and speaking modes with more emphasis on literacy skills of reading and writing. This Academy serves as an initial step for some, while offering a supportive and ongoing experience for others, creating interest and momentum toward building an established long-sequence pipeline for multiple Chinese academic year programs in Blue Valley Schools.
