    Summary

    The STARTALK Performance Assessment Training Program at the Center for Applied Linguistics will use a blended online and face-to-face format to train up to 40 STARTALK educators representing all grade and experience levels and STARTALK languages on the fundamentals of performance-based assessment within the STARTALK context. The program will consist of seven online modules, two webinars, and a three-day face-to-face workshop over the course of 7 continuous weeks. Participants who complete the program will develop performance assessment tasks, adapt rating rubrics, create self-assessment tools for students, and create a standards- and curriculum-based assessment plan with performance objectives. Participants will be prepared to continue to develop these tools and integrate best practices in assessment with best practices in instruction into their teaching. After active instruction ends, the online modules will remain available as a continued reference and for sharing materials and resources until March 31, 2019.

    Summary

    The proposed Chicago Public Schools (CPS) STARTALK program will provide a rich, hands-on, language immersion program in Arabic and Chinese to 30 high school students (9th-11th grade) who have already completed one to two years of Arabic instruction or two to three years of Chinese instruction. The program will be housed at the University of Chicago (UChicago) campus and classes will be conducted by U of C instructors. The program is intended to give students an opportunity to practice and improve their language skills through real-life applications and varied authentic experiences in alignment with STARTALK principles. Participants will attend classes Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, starting July 2 and ending July 27, 2018 with a total of 95 hours of instruction.

    Summary

    The 2018 STARTALK funds will guarantee continued Arabic culture and language learning opportunities at Bell and Hamilton High Schools (levels I and heritage speakers, grades 7th through 12th). The program will offer 60 students the opportunity to receive Arabic immersed instruction of 90 hours (75 hours of face-to face and 15 hours) asynchronous learning model enhanced through culture, technology, and social media from July 16, 2018 to July 18th , 2018. The goal of the program is to increase oral and written proficiency by one sub-level on the ACTFL Proficiency Scales (Arabic I NM-NH, Heritage IM-IH). We anticipate that approximately 95% of our Level I, and heritage students will continue in our 2018- 2019 academic year to increase enrollment in Arabic I and Arabic III, and IV Honors programs offered by the two schools.

    Summary

    The IU LCTL STARTALK Professional Development Program will prepare participants to develop lesson plans using Backward Curriculum Design with performance assessment in the three modes of communication. The program will also train participants to integrate language, culture and content in the language classroom through micro-teaching sessions. Participants will learn how to create a learner centered classroom. Twelve participants who are new instructors or who have not had any formal training in language pedagogy will be selected to permit adequate opportunity for teaching demonstrations. The program will be a total of three-weeks, and 90 instructional hours, of which 10 hours will be devoted to online training and 80 hours will be spent at the residential face-to-face program in Bloomington, Indiana. These hours include some of the hours that the instructors will spend with the participants on individual basis during the evening curriculum clinic session to attend to individual differences and challenges.

    Summary

    The program “Arabic in New Mexico: A Common Past and Shared Future” will provide Arabic instruction for 36 students grades 6-12 at the Novice and Intermediate levels over the course of three weeks (91 contact hours). Novice students will reach the Novice Mid level with some performance at the Novice High level and Intermediate students will reach the Intermediate Low level with some performance at the Intermediate Mid level in all language skills. The program will be guided by the World-Readiness Standards for Language Learning and use performance-based assessment. Through classroom instruction, community interactions, and extracurricular activities, students will develop a greater understanding of past and present cultural connections between New Mexico and the Arab world.

    The Fauquier County 2018 STARTALK program includes 12 instructional days beginning July 9, 2018 and ending July 26, 2018 with total instructional time equaling 65 hours including extended day field trips. New and returning students who are rising fifth to ninth graders will be accepted into differentiated classes with expected novice-mid to intermediate-low proficiency levels. Our program theme will be "My Journey" and will explore authentic practices and products related to traveling to locations that speak the target language. Students will embark on their own journey where they will be able to greet people they meet and exchange information about their trip with others.

    The Wyoming STARTALK Arabic Camp for 2018 will enthrall Wyoming and other Rocky Mountain front range high school and junior college students with visions and experiences of Arabian Nights. The same kind of intrigue and mystique surrounding the popular tales will take on a modern spin by whisking students through contemporary experiences of evening and night activities in various countries in the Middle East around which are structured valuable language learning experiences rich with culture and anecdotal information that will necessarily reinforce language acquisition. We will provide opportunities for 24 students to explore the rich culture of the Middle East as experienced through cultural engagements by equipping these students with the necessary vocabulary and conversational skills to navigate successfully through various simulations recreating cultural experiences. Students will reach the Novice-Mid level of proficiency.

    Summary

    Our fully online Arabic program for high school and college students targets the novice mid and novice high proficiency levels and will consist of daily synchronous and asynchronous language learning experiences (Mon-Thurs). We aim to enroll up to 38 students, providing a total of 100 hours of instruction over five weeks of online language study. The theme of our updated program is classical Arabic literary heritage. By the end of our program, students will know about genres of Arabic literature, famous persons, interesting locales, and will be able to talk with others about cultural exchange and influence, and will have enhanced their abilities in the modes of communication as a foundation for further intermediate level study. They will be able to present information on historical eras and figures, stories from Arab culture, and aspects of daily life that have changed and/or remained the same.

    The 2018 GLP STARTALK combination program will last 10 days, and provide participants 60 contact hours; it will include 24 total participants, four student program leaders and 20 new participants. Participants will focus on the TELL Domain areas of ‘Planning,’ the ‘Learning Experience,’ and ‘Professionalism.’ Participants will have the opportunity to participate in full group and small group lectures and sessions, as well the chance to peer-teach and micro-teach at the GLP summer student Chinese program, which will be run in collaboration with the Graham Windham summer camp. All participants will earn Continuing Teaching and Learning Education (CTLE) Credits.

    Summary

    The UCLA National Heritage Language Resource Center will offer a one-month teacher workshop (three weeks: online material; one week: face-to-face collaboration) on strategies for creating a macro-based PBL curriculum for heritage language learners (HLLs). We will accept 24 participants who will spend 40 instructional hours over a week at UCLA, preceded by 30-50 hours of online work, including time spent working on assignments, and also time as needed during and after the workshop for online consultation with mentors and instructors. Participants will demonstrate an ability to apply principles of project-based learning by designing a Standards- based unit that is appropriate for HLLs with differing proficiency levels and needs. They will apply knowledge gained from presentations, discussions, and exercises on HLL characteristics, differentiated instruction, Standards-based instruction, project-based instruction, and backward design. Four former workshop participants who have implemented innovative projects and materials suitable to HLLs into their programs will be invited to return as mentors.
