    Summary

    The Fauquier County 2018 STARTALK program includes 12 instructional days beginning July 9, 2018 and ending July 26, 2018 with total instructional time equaling 65 hours including extended day field trips. New and returning students who are rising fifth to ninth graders will be accepted into differentiated classes with expected novice-mid to intermediate-low proficiency levels. Our program theme will be "My Journey" and will explore authentic practices and products related to traveling to locations that speak the target language. Students will embark on their own journey where they will be able to greet people they meet and exchange information about their trip with others.

    Summary

    The proposed program will include 20 instructors of higher education from community colleges and other institutions of higher education. Participants will have limited backgrounds in assessment in general and in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and Modified Oral Proficiency (MOPI) in particular. Participants will benefit from a total of 35 hours of professional development: 10 hours before the program, when they participate in an online introduction to the MOPI, practice rating and set goals for the workshop; 21 hours during the face-to-face workshop; one hour in September to complete a survey, one hour in October/November to complete an interview and two hours in January to complete a survey and an interview. The program will also conduct research on short- and long-term impacts of this professional development for participants, their students and their professional growth.

    Summary

    At the conclusion of the program, our students will have the linguistic and cultural skills necessary to interact with Arabic speakers on basic, everyday topics, especially the topic of food. We will recruit 20 or 22 students to participate in this intensive STARTALK Arabic program. Our participants will be high school seniors and college students (grades 12-16). Their proficiency level in Arabic will be Novice-High by the conclusion of the program. We will conduct about 94 instructional hours throughout a four-week period, to extend from June 25th to July 19th, 2018.

    Summary

    Our program will emphasize standards-based, learner-centered planning and classroom management for teaching Korean language and culture based on four TELL learning goals. Participants will demonstrate how to plan and create learning plans that address the unique needs and interests of their students and use the backward design process to plan lessons that lead students to meet performance objectives.
    Number of participants and their teaching levels: 16 pre-service teachers.

    Duration of the program: three weeks in the summer followed by two fall workshops.

    Summary

    The 2018 VSCSA program at the University of Virginia aims to provide a linguistically and culturally enriched online learning environment for 24 high school students who are rising 9th-12th graders in the US. Students will embark on a 12-day virtual journey in Beijing from July 5 to July 19 in 2018 that concurs with the major timeframe of the VSCTA teacher program. Upon the completion of the program, the learners will develop a positive “Can-Do” attitude and attain proficiency at the intermediate-low level according to ACTFL’s proficiency guidelines. Curricular requirements and lesson plans will be effectively implemented in alignment with the can-do statements across the three communicative modes specified in the online LinguiaFolio. The total instructional hours are 40 hours, including time committed to online orientation and synchronous and asynchronous online learning. Teacher and student ratio is 1:1. The program features quality online learning that is made possible by research-endorsed best practices in language pedagogy and cutting-edge technology platform and tools. Learners have ample opportunities to engage in active learning that is intended to be fun, engaging, and motivating. Students who attend all online synchronous sessions and complete all programmatic and curricular requirements will receive a gift card at the amount of up to 50.00 and a Certificate of Excellence in Learning.     Summary

    The 2-week residential teacher training program, preceded by 2-week pre-program online training and followed by 1-week offsite practicum, aims to train 12 teachers to learn to teach Mandarin Chinese to 9-12 graders online. Teacher trainees will earn up to five graduate credits in "Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language" that offers 126 instructional hours. The integration of both theory and practice will be delivered through a blended instructional model before, during, and after the program. The program ensures quality instruction and guides trainees to achieve three goals: 1) to effectively implement world-readiness standards in thematic and curricular design and STARTALK endorsed principles for effective teaching and learning, 2) to strengthen their observation and practicum experience in online teaching, and 3) to further their pursuit of teaching certification for career advancement in online teaching. The capstone in the development of trainees’ competence will be the completion of an E-portfolio that documents trainees’ extensive learning experiences in launching or advancing their careers in teaching online Mandarin Chinese courses.     Summary

    Discover Russian is a four-week introduction to Russian language and culture course that will be offered by American Councils for International Education and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) to 30 rising 8th-12th graders at TJHSST’s campus in Fairfax County, Virginia. The program fosters interest in Russian language and culture among students with and without access to Russian programs in their schools and/or communities by offering three class levels: Novice-Mid for those new to Russian and Novice-High and Intermediate Low for those with prior Russian language experience. Although placement will be determined by language proficiency and not age, differentiation will occur to accommodate students’ varying rates of learning and levels of maturity. Classes will meet seven hours each day for 18 days, for a total of 126 hours of immersion instruction. Participants in Level One will reach Novice-Mid level proficiency by the program’s end, while those in Level Two will attain Novice-High, and those in Level Three will reach Intermediate Low.

    The STARTALK Discover Russian Teacher Program is a two-week (July 16-27, 2018) teacher training program located on the campus of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County, Virginia. The theme of the Teacher Program will be “A Roadmap for Teaching and Learning Russian using the World-Readiness Standards”, and it will provide 15 teachers of Russian with instruction six hours a day for 12 days. During this period, teachers will learn to deliver a standards-based instructional program at the K-12 level in Russian. Participants will create their own learning plans for their classrooms, while keeping within the limits of their state and district guidelines. They will also explore new avenues with their students that will allow them to reach their final destination—Russia and Russian!

    The Virginia Beach Summer STARTALK Academies seek to provide easily accessible, free opportunities for language and culture learning to students throughout the school division, reflecting the diverse learners in our community. 45 fifth grade students will be selected by lottery for the Chinese language strand and 30 for the Russian strand; participants from last summer’s program will be invited to attend advanced classes. The program will be held from June 25 to July 19, 2018, Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM -12:00 PM (minus July 4th) totaling 64 instructional hours with the field trip. After-school Post-Sessions are planned to extend student cultural knowledge and language proficiency.

    The three-week summer program will provide 50 middle school students (i.e. rising 6th through 8th graders) with Chinese and Arabic instruction at Novice Low and Novice Mid levels for 4.5 hours a day for 15 days (i.e. 67.5 total hours of instruction) from July 9 to July 27. Teachers will have more than 30 hours of pre-service training, plus one half-hour before class each day to prepare their materials and consult with one another, and one hour after class to reflect on their teaching practice and review the day's work, including weekly work in the computer lab analyzing their students' progress in providing evidence for LinguaFolio CAN DO statements. Teacher assistants will be included in part of the pre-service week, working with teachers to prepare activities and materials, and will work in-class to help students. Outcomes include students' self-assessment as CAN DO or CAN DO WITH HELP on at least seven pre-identified LinguaFolio indicators embedded in the curriculum covering major language domains.
