    Summary

    YHS STARTALK Hindi Language and Culture Program 2017, a 3-week, 105 hours project based language immersion program for 40 First to 8th graders, to be organized in collaboration with North Penn School District, PA, at Nash Elementary School, Harleysville, PA, from July 24 to August 11, 2017, is focused on the theme, ''Celebrating India: Cuisine and Living Arts’', providing opportunities for students to use the language for a variety of real life purposes.
    The program, based on ACTFL proficiency guidelines and the World Readiness Standards for Language Learning, aims to train young learners perform basic functions and tasks in culturally appropriate manner and explore ideas and issues in the language and culture in order to construct their own meaning and purpose.
    We follow STARTALK endorsed principles for effective learning and teaching while training students learn, imagine, describe, share information about real life situations through 100 percent exposure in the target language.
    By end of the program students will be able to handle simple communicative tasks and social situations with increased quantity and quality of speech; communicate in culturally appropriate manner; understand and comprehend many requests and courtesy expressions; read simple texts with connected sentences with increased understanding and describe in simple language some familiar and unfamiliar real life situations producing varieties of evidences of learning.
    An online follow up learning program during the post program months will be implemented to help learners sustain and improve their skills and continue learning Hindi and experiencing its culture.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Penn Chinese Teacher Advancement Program is a teacher enrichment program to provide STARTALK-approved training to 15 high school and college Chinese language teachers for career advancement. This two-week program is from July 24 to August 4th, Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm, followed by two post-program meetings on October 7th and November 11th (as a capstone event). During the program, participating teachers will use STARTALK-Endorsed Principles, backward design, and online search materials to collaborate a unit design based on China's across-continents initiative "One Belt, One Road". Video-editing, teaching demos with peer-review, leadership training, content on Civilizations of China and Inner Asia, and high school-college articulation will also covered in the program. The program will be located on the beautiful campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Participants will receive a Penn certification at the end of the 60 hour training. For in-service high school teachers, this is a pathway to receive ACT 48 hours for re-certification and career advancement. After the program, the teachers will have new lesson plans that are Standards-based, with integrated language, culture and content, for the new school year.

    Summary

    YSMCS STARTALK Turkish Language Program will offer 75 hours of instruction for 15 days for 40 students in 3-5 and 6-8 Grades through intensive language classes and rich cultural workshops and presentations. Students will experience Turkish language and culture through traditional Ebru Art. The program curriculum will be constructed around the traditional Turkish Arts Ebru, Calligraphy and Turkish Folk Dances. Students will also engage in various task-based language activities to improve language proficiency. During the program there will be different cultural trips to help students indulge in the real Turkish culture. Field trips, Hands-on student centered activities, catered lunch including authentic Turkish food, interactive language learning, and more!

    Summary

    Pitt Chinese STARTALK program will offer a 3-week non-residential language and culture program to 20 rising 9th-12th graders in high school for a total of 96 instructional hours at the University of Pittsburgh, Oakland campus. The standard-based and student-centered curriculum is guided by theme “A Bridge through Culture - Building Global Friendship” which aims to develop students’ linguistic and intercultural competence through experiential learning with native speakers and immersion in Chinese cultural activities. Upon conclusion of this program, students will be expected to have an ACTFL Novice-Min/High proficiency level in speaking, reading, writing, and listening.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Arabic Academy at Penn State is an ambitious, multifaceted program for 20 high school and college students to take an introductory college course in Arabic. For 4 weeks (June-July), a multinational instructional team provides instruction in Arabic for 5.5 hours daily Monday through Thursday, an additional 2 hours of afternoon immersion twice a week, and 4.5 hours on Friday, for a total of 113 available instructional hours. Upon successful completion, students earn 4 Penn State credits (one semester of college Arabic). Through student-centered, task-based, and communicative activities, students will become acquainted with Arabic cultures and learn to communicate in Arabic. Starting with no prior knowledge of Arabic, students will reach novice-mid or novice-high level.

    The 2017 UPenn Hindi-Urdu Startalk Program will offer five weeks of completely online instruction from May 22 - June 28. Classes will meet weekdays 4-6 pm on an online meeting platform. Students with little or no prior background will learn to use the language to communicate in a variety of real-world situations. Students will also learn to read and write one script of their choice (Hindi or Urdu script).
