    Summary

    For Part 1 of the STARTALK-Hawaii Institute, five elementary school teacher trainees will receive 30 hours of coaching over 5 days, to build their capacity to run a Grade 1 and Kindergarten dual immersion program in Chinese. In Part 2, eight or nine of the twelve teacher trainees will primarily be teaching grades 7-12; the rest may be distributed among elementary schools, community schools, or colleges. The Institute is 22 days long, on average 10 hours per day. Outcomes of the Institute include: Be able to identify the characteristics of a standards based, learner-centered, task- and performance oriented program; know what the 5Cs and the three modes look like when implemented in a curriculum; be very familiar with the STARTALK principles, and begin to innovate in "comprehensible input" strategies, particularly for reading; explore project-based learning; and gain experience and confidence in implementing these principles into your own planning, teaching, and assessment practices.

    Pitt STARTALK will be administered by the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian and East European Studies (REES) and offer an intensive four-week residential program from June 17 to July 13, 2018, with 160 formal and informal instructional hours for 20 students entering grades 10 through 12. REES is partnering with three high schools that offer academic year Russian language programs (Pittsburgh Brashear High School, Pritzker College Prep, and The Noble Academy) to recruit participants. The curriculum will be based on the theme “Soon to Russia!”, through which the Pitt STARTALK students will prepare to spend an academic year studying abroad in Russia. Instruction will be performance-based and emphasize acquisition of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, with a goal of ACTFL Novice Mid to Novice High proficiency across modalities for students in Russian I and Intermediate Low proficiency for students in Russian II. Other anticipated outcomes include increased cultural knowledge and college readiness.

    This online/on-site program emphasizes classroom teaching strategies and basic principles that can be applied to a variety of classroom settings. Participants learn to implement the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, develop student-centered lessons with backwards design appropriate to student proficiency, background and needs, use the target language and authentic materials in real-life scenarios. 20 Hindi and Urdu teachers participate. Preference is given to applicants with some teaching experience and native or near-native language proficiency without previous or with limited formal training. Training is conducted in both target languages and English and at the end teachers prepare a portfolio that demonstrates understanding of the principles of learning and teaching, including a standards-based lesson for micro- teaching, and at least one lesson plan or unit appropriate to the participant's teaching setting, two reflection/ journal entries (a micro- teaching experience and a final self-assessment essay), observation reports and a final project. Through an online component participants engage in reading, video-observations, group- projects, postings and forum discussions, while on site, they design activities in groups and individually, and team-teach beginning level students. The program is 70 hours delivered over four weeks – two weeks of online instruction, one week on site (8 full days Saturday-Saturday) and one more week online.

    STARTALK-Penn Chinese Language Teacher Advancement

    The STARTALK-Penn Chinese Teacher Advancement Program is a teacher enrichment program to provide STARTALK-approved training to 15 K-12 Chinese language teachers for career advancement. This two-week program will be from July 23 to August 3rd, daily Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm, followed by two post-program meetings: one in October as continuing "One Belt One Road" (一带一路, OBOR) lesson plan discussion meeting and one in December as a capstone event showcasing student products/learning results of each participant's school . During the program participating teachers will infuse STARTALK-Endorsed Principles, backward design and online video and text editing skills to create unit and lesson plans with the knowledge of China's cross-continent initiative "One Belt, One Road" to implement outstanding Chinese courses at their own schools. The program features video editing training, field trips to Philadelphia schools and the Penn Museum, expert discussions on the Silk Road, Civilizations of China and Inner Asia, Chinese-specific pedagogy, high school-college articulation and free ACTFL World-Readiness FL Standards reference books. Participants from out-of-state and out-of-city will receive STARTALK funds to cover housing during the program; Pennsylvania participants will receive ACT 48 hours toward their re-certification and career advancement. After the program, the teachers will have new lesson plans that are ACTFL Standards-based, with innovative language, culture and technology components, to use in the new school year.

    From an interdisciplinary perspective, using online and off-line materials connected with China's classic "Silk Road" and current cross-continental project OBOR, attendees of STARTALK-Penn Chinese Language Teacher Advancement Program can introduce students to China and the world using Chinese language class as a vehicle. This program's content of OBOR will help teachers work more closely with global studies/East Asian arts/history/economics curriculum, thus opening doors to new collaborations and means of support for Chinese language programs within schools.

    ASU Chinese Language Camp: From STARTALK to Flagship offers a 15-day intensive residential program for motivated current 8th-12th grade students in Arizona. This program provides a great opportunity for both heritage and non-heritage learners to explore and expand their knowledge in Chinese language and culture through a highly structured theme- and task-based curriculum. During the program, students will receive instructions in Chinese language and participate in fun, hands-on cultural activities.
    The program boasts a living-learning setting, where participants gain first-hand college life experience on the ASU Tempe campus during the summer. All evening activities are monitored and supervised by resident advisors who reside in the residence hall with students. We hope that through this summer camp, high school students will see the value and fun of learning and exploring the language and culture beyond a structured classroom setting and eventually become life-long learners of Chinese language.

    The IU LCTL STARTALK Professional Development Program will prepare participants to develop lesson plans using Backward Curriculum Design with performance assessment in the three modes of communication. The program will also train participants to integrate language, culture and content in the language classroom through micro-teaching sessions. Participants will learn how to create a learner centered classroom. Twelve participants who are new instructors or who have not had any formal training in language pedagogy will be selected to permit adequate opportunity for teaching demonstrations. The program will be a total of three-weeks, and 90 instructional hours, of which 10 hours will be devoted to online training and 80 hours will be spent at the residential face-to-face program in Bloomington, Indiana. These hours include some of the hours that the instructors will spend with the participants on individual basis during the evening curriculum clinic session to attend to individual differences and challenges.

    Appalachian State University (App State), located in Boone, North Carolina, offers a three-week, residential, intensive student program from July 9 to July 27, 2018. The culturally rich and academically rigorous Chinese program is designed for 18 rising 9th-12th-grade students with limited or no previous exposure to Chinese from the high schools in the High Country of North Carolina. Focusing on the theme of “The High Country Meets the Middle Kingdom,” the program will offer a total of 235 contact hours in structured language learning. Upon the completion of the program, students will reach “Novice Low/Mid” proficiency in all modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational).

    Two weeks face to face (June 24-July 6) and two weeks online (July 9 - July 20). By the end of the program, 18 instructors of Chinese will have gained measurable proficiency in designing and delivering a standards-based curriculum and pedagogy, with a focus on the following: World-Readiness standards of Communication, Culture and Connections, and four TELL domains.
    The targeted TELL domains include: (1) Learning Experiences, with a focus on comprehensible input and cultural observation and analysis, (2) Planning, with an emphasis on ensuring that teacher-trainees’ lessons are interesting (P2a), relevant, and age appropriate, and (3) collaboration, with a focus on assisting teacher-trainees to develop the skills to collaborate with individuals and organizations, and connect with members of the Chinese speaking community.

    The following describes our targets by levels:

    Chinese instructors: novice =5, intermediate = 8, and master teacher = 5

    The program will provide 95-hours of instruction over a four-week period, and offer eight hours of online training, and six-hours follow-on online workshops, which will strengthen participants’ ability to collaborate with other instructors, community members, and native Chinese speakers.

    This program is a 5-week long combination (teacher preparation and student language learning) program in June and July 2018 to promote Chinese language learning and teaching in the local Central Maine community. With a focus on Chinese art, this program will offer a 2-week long residential, culture-rich, content-based pedagogical training for preservice/inservice teachers of Chinese and a 3-week long beginning-level Chinese summer camp to students from ages 10-12. During the first two weeks, the teacher participants will learn the basics of teaching Chinese as second language through hands-on experiences and will be guided to create lesson plans for the Chinese summer camp using the Backward Design and Content-Based Instruction approach. During the Chinese language camp of the third to the fifth weeks of the combination program, the teacher participants will implement their lesson plans and the student participants will learn basic Chinese through an art-based, culture-rich experience. The teacher participants will receive a certificate at the end of the 168 hour training whereas the student participants will gain an opportunity to develop their interests in and awareness of as well as an initial understanding of the Chinese language, art, and culture, and learn to use basic Chinese to communicate about their personal information, preferences, and art-related daily activities.

    The Wyoming STARTALK Arabic Camp for 2018 will enthrall Wyoming and other Rocky Mountain front range high school and junior college students with visions and experiences of Arabian Nights. The same kind of intrigue and mystique surrounding the popular tales will take on a modern spin by whisking students through contemporary experiences of evening and night activities in various countries in the Middle East around which are structured valuable language learning experiences rich with culture and anecdotal information that will necessarily reinforce language acquisition. We will provide opportunities for 24 students to explore the rich culture of the Middle East as experienced through cultural engagements by equipping these students with the necessary vocabulary and conversational skills to navigate successfully through various simulations recreating cultural experiences. Students will reach the Novice-Mid level of proficiency.
