    Summary

    Environmental Challenges and Public Health in India and Pakistan serves as the theme for Kean’s 2017 Building Competency in Hindi and Urdu through Global Project-Based Learning Program designed for secondary/early post-secondary heritage language learners. Specifically, the theme focuses on the integration of language, culture and content related to perspectives and practices concerning health and wellness and their relationship to environmental conditions in India and Pakistan. Program outcomes include development of higher levels of linguistic, intercultural and global competencies through daily interactions with students from partner schools in India and Pakistan focused on gaining knowledge about and taking action on these local/global issues. The program will enroll 20 Hindi and 15 Urdu students in a three-week standards-driven blended learning experience and offers opportunities to earn high school and/or college credits.

    Summary

    YHS STARTALK Hindi Language and Culture Program 2017, a 3-week, 105 hours project based language immersion program for 40 First to 8th graders, to be organized in collaboration with North Penn School District, PA, at Nash Elementary School, Harleysville, PA, from July 24 to August 11, 2017, is focused on the theme, ''Celebrating India: Cuisine and Living Arts’', providing opportunities for students to use the language for a variety of real life purposes.
    The program, based on ACTFL proficiency guidelines and the World Readiness Standards for Language Learning, aims to train young learners perform basic functions and tasks in culturally appropriate manner and explore ideas and issues in the language and culture in order to construct their own meaning and purpose.
    We follow STARTALK endorsed principles for effective learning and teaching while training students learn, imagine, describe, share information about real life situations through 100 percent exposure in the target language.
    By end of the program students will be able to handle simple communicative tasks and social situations with increased quantity and quality of speech; communicate in culturally appropriate manner; understand and comprehend many requests and courtesy expressions; read simple texts with connected sentences with increased understanding and describe in simple language some familiar and unfamiliar real life situations producing varieties of evidences of learning.
    An online follow up learning program during the post program months will be implemented to help learners sustain and improve their skills and continue learning Hindi and experiencing its culture.

    Summary

    We’ll enroll 75 to 80 students from ages 8 to 14 (grades 2-8) and focus on oral-aural communication in Hindi in a 'total Immersion' environment with student-centered classroom instruction, yoga, music, dance, arts & crafts, sports, technology apps, mela/bazaar, a culture immersion day and/or a field trip. These activities are designed to improve students proficiency in spoken language and develop awareness and appreciation of Indian culture. The program will be conducted in accordance with the STARTALK principles. The program will ensure that the participating students improve their proficiency at least one to two notches higher on the ACTFL scale than their entry-level proficiency. The program will try to inculcate enduring interest in Hindi language and culture and becoming bilingual in personal and societal interests.
    Camp will be held in Marlboro Memorial Middle school in Morganville, NJ from July 17 – August 4, 2017, Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM-3:30 PM (105 contact hours).

    Summary

    The STARTALK Hindi and Urdu Program Immersion Program will run from July 10 till July 28, 2017. The program will enroll 70 students, heritage and non-heritage,for Hindi and Urdu language, 35 for Hindi and 35 for Urdu language whose proficiency will vary from Novice to Advanced. The instructional hours will be from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm for two weeks when they are onsite and one week students will work online from 9.00 am till 2.00 pm. The theme of the program is " Where Our Dreams Take Us: Immigration and Identity". The curriculum will follow backward design model and will be guided by the World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages for Hindi and Urdu languages. At the completion of the three week program students will be able to perform tasks in Novice to Advance range in accordance with the ACTFL Performance Guidelines for k-12 students (1999).

    Summary

    Chinmaya Mission STARTALK Summer Hindi Camp - 2017 (CMSSHC-17) will take place in Grayslake (a north-west suburb of Chicago), IL, July 10th to July 28th, 2017, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. offering 90 instructional hours over the 15 day camp (M-F each week for three weeks) to introduce thirty six 8-10 year old students to conversational and written Hindi at novice mid (proficiency) / novice high (performance) and novice high (proficiency) / intermediate low (performance) levels.
    The theme "MY COOL SCHOOL" will be divided in three sub themes - 1) MY - Me & You (learners will exchange information about themselves, their families, friends, likes, dislikes, daily school routine, extra-curricular interests with classmates) 2) COOL - Cultural Orientation Offered through Language (learners will compare and contrast American and Indian cultures as they explore school life, holidays such as Diwali and Halloween, after school activities, and a few customs they encounter in the Hindi camp) - 3) SCHOOL - STARTALK Chinmaya Hindi - Outstanding Opportunities for Learners (students will make connections with other disciplines through hands on activities, such as math, science, geography, arts, health, and nutrition).
    As the outcome of the program, learners will be able to communicate in all three modes of communication, immersed in cultural practices (such as folk dances, songs, greetings, showing respect to elders) and products (such as food, clothing, books, music, movies) of Hindi speaking natives.
    Learners will make connections with other disciplines, such as math, science, arts, health, and nutrition, compare and contrast American and Indian cultures (different holidays, sports, customs) and languages (gender differentiation in Hindi, prepositions vs. post-positions, degrees of formality, sentence structure, etc), take their learning beyond the classroom by visiting a local senior center, where most seniors speak Hindi, who will be able to share their school experiences with our learners and by connecting with similar age children in India through Skype / Google Hangout and sharing school-learning experiences with each other.
    Working in teams of three, through discussions, negotiation, and voting, our learners will be able to design their COOL SCHOOL and invite others to study at their school.

    Summary

    STARTALK Ohio Hindi Summer Camp will offer an exciting opportunity to 50 local elementary and middle school students (8-13 years old) to learn and/or improve their Hindi language skills and expand their knowledge of Indian culture. This year we have chosen "Endangered Animals" as the theme for our program which will introduce 50 novice and intermediate learners (ages 8-13 years) to some endangered animals from India and USA. Learners will understand that people and climate affect animal population and we all play a role in preventing animals from becoming endangered. At the end of the three-week (90 hours) program, learners will have a learning experience that is meaningful involving language, culture and content, and move individual student’s proficiency level up by at least one sub-level.

    Summary

    STARTALK/Kanti Hindi Kendra will offer three week of 'Hindi Language and Culture Immersion' summer program to 74 elementary and middle school students from June 26 to July 14, 2017. The program will provide 92 hours of standards driven and learner-centered Hindi language learning experience to novice and intermediate range heritage learners. Participants will have the opportunity to develop language skills, native art (drama, visual arts and music) and cultural competence by exploring program's theme 'Me and My World- Celebrating the Diversity'. Theme based games, competitions, multi-media projects and hands-on native visual and performing arts projects such as 'Traditional Art Forms'; 'Fair and Festivity' will further provide learning experiences to all language learners with varied needs to engage in meaningful communication, create and present collaborative products for peer assessment and self reflection. The outcome for our learners will be their ability to demonstrate gains in Hindi language proficiency in three modes of communication at higher sub-level. During our post program phase (September 2017 to February 2018) the participants will have the opportunity to continue to stay engaged in Hindi language and culture learning and further advance their Hindi language proficiency and cultural perspective.

    Sangam-Franklin STARTALK Hindi Language and Culture Program 2017, a three week (105 hours) project based language immersion program for 40 rising six to ninth graders, is focused on the theme, 'Stories from India: Pearls of Wisdom', that provides opportunities to students use the language for a variety of real-life purposes.
    The program aims to increase students' content knowledge, cultural experiences and literacy through storytelling under three sub-themes, ‘Stories of Animals and birds’, ‘My family stories’, and ‘Stories of my ‘Heroes’, leading to prepare students construct their own narratives. These goals are outlined in the curricula for two levels-Novice and Intermediate, which are based on ACTFL proficiency guidelines and the World Readiness Standards for Language Learning.
    By end of the program students will be able to communicate in culturally appropriate ways; understand and comprehend courtesy expressions and describe in simple language some familiar and unfamiliar real life situation, read and write simple texts in Hindi and reflect upon their thoughts and ideas in culturally appropriate context.

    Summary

    Experienced classroom teachers of beginning levels of critical languages will be selected to participate in the “STARTALK: Transitioning to Teaching Language Online” (STARTALK:TTLO) program courses and will work entirely online with the instructional support of experienced online program instructors.

    The program will be offered as an intensive three-week summer course (June 12 - July 2, 2017) for 25 critical language teachers. Participants will be engaged in active learning for approximately 120 hours total for the program (40 hours per week), depending on the needs and skills of the participants.

    Outcomes will include improving the participant teachers’ ability to 1) analyze their experiences as an online students and online language students; 2) articulate the differences between teaching online and teaching in the classroom; 3) design successful online, proficiency-oriented language activities within the 3 communication modes framework, and 4) identify basic principles of how to design, develop, and deliver their own hybrid or online course.

    The course includes online language mini-lessons so participants gain experience being online learners themselves. Online course design and expectations, along with best practices for teaching online, are investigated and compared to the traditional classroom. Language learning activities are modeled, then created and tested, and peer-critiqued.

    Summary

    HEB ISD’s Startalk "Around the World in 12 Days" language academy will provide 3 weeks and 72 hours of student-centered learning and instruction in Hindi, Arabic, or Chinese to rising 7th graders, and intermediate level practice for 8th-11th grade students. Projected enrollment for Arabic, Hindi, and Chinese will be 50 students- 25 7th graders, and 25 intermediate students. At the end of this academy, we expect students to achieve novice level oral proficiency in their language of choice (rising 7th graders) and intermediate low-mid (upper grades). We anticipate that approximately 90% of our 7th grade students will continue in the language course in the fall at our district. For intermediate students, we expect their grades on the IB exams to reflect the benefits of additional language practice.
