    Summary

The Jefferson School District STARTALK Chinese Summer Camp is an opportunity for rising sixth grade Chinese immersion students to join for an intensive linguistic and cultural experience. The camp will run Monday through Thursday for five hours per day for three weeks. Students will complete an online component to the camp before the face-to-face portion, which will be held at Rigby Middle School.

Participation in the camp is free. Transportation by school bus to and from the camp will be available to all camp participants. Lunch and snacks will be provided each day of the camp. Students will also receive a program T-shirt and lanyard.

During the camp, students will engage with the theme “Health and the Human Body” through their participation in a small group, Project Based Learning (PBL) experience where they will create and give a presentation on a human body system of their choice to an authentic Chinese audience. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in a fetal pig dissection, Tai Chi/Kun Fu Fan Dancing, singing traditional Chinese songs, and cooking traditional Chinese food. It is anticipated that, after participating in the camp, students will be able to engage in Intermediate Mid discourse regarding healthy forms of living and eating in the Chinese and American cultures and the organs and functions of various human body systems.
