    Summary

    The STARTALK Performance Assessment Training Program at the Center for Applied Linguistics will use a blended online and face-to-face format to train up to 40 STARTALK educators representing all grade and experience levels and STARTALK languages on the fundamentals of performance-based assessment within the STARTALK context. The program will consist of seven online modules, two webinars, and a three-day face-to-face workshop over the course of 7 continuous weeks. Participants who complete the program will develop performance assessment tasks, adapt rating rubrics, create self-assessment tools for students, and create a standards- and curriculum-based assessment plan with performance objectives. Participants will be prepared to continue to develop these tools and integrate best practices in assessment with best practices in instruction into their teaching. After active instruction ends, the online modules will remain available as a continued reference and for sharing materials and resources until March 31, 2019.

    Summary

    The Providence Day School (PDS) Chinese Teacher Program is a 60 contact hour intensive teacher training designed to meld a comprehensive introduction to current research-backed practices in Second Language Acquisition (including the 6 STARTALK Principles for effective language teaching) with a practical hands-on “do & reflect” approach. Teacher participants will learn from a team of experienced world language teachers and teacher-trainers, and have ample opportunities to apply that knowledge both during this 2-week program and (for 8 of the 12 participants) during the 3-week, 90 contact hour student program immediately following the teacher program. Teachers will work collaboratively to experience, interpret, discuss and apply best practices in world language instruction. They will create, teach, and participate in a variety of whole class, small group, paired and individual activities designed to equip them with new tools to deliver more effective student-centered language instruction in both the student program to follow and in their yearlong classrooms. Assessment of teacher success will be measured both by the TELL framework during the program, as well as a summative assessment: drafting, workshopping, finalizing and implementing culturally-rich, student-centered STARTALK Learning Plans.

    The 2018 STARTALK DCPS Language and Culture Teacher Institute program will serve 20 critical language teachers beginning June 25 and ending June 22, 2018. Teachers will receive 25 hours of instruction and will earn 25 Professional Learning Units. Teachers will receive hands-on interactive training in best practices for the teaching of critical language, and will have opportunities to collaborate and share resources for classroom implementation. Eight of the 20 teachers will additionally receive coaching as they serve as the instructors for the student portion of the program.

    Summary

    YingHua STARTALK Teacher Program is an intensive 12-day training program designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of teachers of Mandarin Chinese. Participating teachers of varying levels of expertise, experience, and preparedness, learn to incorporate World-Readiness standards, immersion and inquiry-based learning principles in their teaching, and continue to advance their understanding of Startalk-endorsed principles and techniques. The key components of the program involve two types of learning: direct teaching by highly-qualified instructors known for their expertise in the field of world language education, and hands-on teaching and re-teaching experience in close collaboration with the YingHua Startalk Student Program. Participants will design and deliver lessons first to peers and then to real-world students, receiving immediate feedback from peers and instructors on their lessons, which they will then revise and re-teach with higher quality. This focus on the reflection and refinement process will provide participants the opportunity to develop skills they can implement in their classrooms in the real world immediately or as soon as the fall.

    Summary

    The Rutgers Chinese Teacher Leadership Academy is a two-week, 80-hour intensive program in which pre- and in-service Chinese teachers will engage in professional development focused on literacy and online instruction. During the academic year, program participants are invited to the Rutgers Chinese Round Table, where Chinese language teachers engage in a monthly, supportive community of practice. As part of the program, Chinese language teacher participants engage in two two practicum settings: an online program for high school students and an elementary FLEX program. At the end of the program, teachers will be able to:

    plan learning experiences that support the STARTALK principles and World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages;

    differentiate instruction
    (planning learning experiences that address the students' unique needs), especially in terms of literacy
    development; use a variety of learning tools to support performance objectives (in face-to-face and online contexts);

    routinely use internal and external assessment data to modify the learning experience; and

    grow as reflective practitioners.

    The 2018 GLP STARTALK combination program will last 10 days, and provide participants 60 contact hours; it will include 24 total participants, four student program leaders and 20 new participants. Participants will focus on the TELL Domain areas of ‘Planning,’ the ‘Learning Experience,’ and ‘Professionalism.’ Participants will have the opportunity to participate in full group and small group lectures and sessions, as well the chance to peer-teach and micro-teach at the GLP summer student Chinese program, which will be run in collaboration with the Graham Windham summer camp. All participants will earn Continuing Teaching and Learning Education (CTLE) Credits.

    Summary

    Ten pre-service and in-service teachers will be given the opportunity to complete proficiency- and evidence-based training through the cycle of observe, teach, critique, and reflect. The training will emphasize the importance of implementing a standards-based and thematically organized curriculum, using the target language, and providing comprehensible input for instruction. The design of the teacher program is closely integrated with the student program. Participants will gain abundant experience in both classroom-based and online teaching. Participants can earn graduate credits toward the M.A. in the Teaching Chinese degree and the New York State teacher certificate. Instruction is approximately 120 hours.

    Summary

    The LMU 2018 Mandarin Teacher Summer Institute will continue to respond to the demand for highly qualified teachers of Chinese by providing support and resources through the provision of two pathways for teacher preparation: 1) The continuing graduate-level Mandarin language credential, and 2) the Certificate in Teaching Mandarin in PreK-12 Settings. Pathway 1: Credential program outcomes include: 1) recruiting and admitting highly qualified K-12 Chinese language teacher candidates for entrance into the secondary or multiple subjects requirements and master's degree program; 2) Supporting Summer Institute participants in passing state testing requirements; 3) Providing 2 cohorts of teacher candidates (21 total) with 6 units of graduate-level coursework applicable to their credentials and masters. The credential program offers 110 hours of coursework, independent work and clinical practice for graduate credit. Pathway 2 is the Certificate in Teaching Chinese in Pre-K – 12 Settings with a targeted enrollment of 13 participants (5 new and 8 returning) who teach in heritage or other programs. Pathway 2 participants complete a hybrid course-series offered through LMU Extension for up to 12 continuing education units of credit (120 professional development credit hours). Upon completion of this second Summer Institute Pathway, participants will: 1) Expand knowledge of content-based Mandarin language and literacy, with a focus on the arts and movement education (Content-based Language Instruction and Curriculum Development in Mandarin); 2) Incorporate research-based practices in assessment linked to instruction (Assessment Basics and Oral Proficiency); 3) Apply new skills in content instruction in Mandarin and engage in reflection about their practices (Practicum in Teaching Mandarin); and 4) Deepen knowledge and skill in teaching Chinese grammar (Chinese Grammar Pedagogy course).

    This is a two-part, five-week, online program totaling 45 instructional hours, designed for Korean language teachers from K-16 institutions.
    The participants will learn how to create digital teaching resources using educational technology (first 3 weeks) and work on their online Korean teaching portfolios with guidance of instructors (last 2 weeks), which they will submit to the program director at the end of the program.
    Upon completion of the program, participants will have a solid understanding of the standards such as the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages; have developed a wealth of resources they can immediately implement in their classes; be ready to continue to create further resources using appropriate educational technology that incorporates the standards in their classroom; and have built a support network for continued growth as an effective Korean teacher. At the end of the program successful participants will receive a certificate for 45 hours of Professional Development Points through Boston University's School of Education.     Summary

    Outcomes of the City University of Seattle Startalk Teacher Certification program: recruit 16 fluent speakers of Chinese, Korean, and Portuguese for Startalk Cohort 12. They will be at the novice teaching level (pre-service). Cohort 12 will take nine undergraduate quarter credits towards a Washington State teaching certificate. The program will run 14 days (July 2-July 20) for a total of 90 instructional hours. After the summer program, candidates will take an additional 14 credits over fall, winter and spring quarters, completing student teaching and the edTPA by June. During the field experience, teacher candidates will take the Designated World Languages test in order to add the world language endorsement to their teaching credentials. Teacher candidates, if all state standards and requirements are met, will then be able to apply for Washington state teaching certificates. The state teaching certificates may be exchanged in other states that have reciprocal agreements with Washington state.
