    Summary

    STARTALK WeChat: Chinese School Edition is a non-residential 3-week, 90 contact hour Chinese language program for rising 6th graders through rising college freshman in the greater Charlotte, N.C. area. Applying students should have less than 2 years studying Mandarin Chinese in formal or informal contexts (including speaking Chinese at home). Students will work in classes with small teacher to student ratios (1:5). The program theme, WeChat, is the most popular Chinese social media application and is used by over a billion people worldwide. Use of this app throughout the program will enable students to interact with their peers and teachers in a variety of familiar ways (sharing pictures, instant messaging, posting statuses about what they are doing/how they are feeling, etc.). The program will also include a field trip in which students will enjoy the opportunity to apply their new knowledge in multiple settings, experiencing Chinese culture right in their own backyards! The program will culminate in a shared celebration of student learning open to parents and siblings. Students will design and manage activity stations to show off all of their new language and cultural knowledge--by teaching what they know to their parents, siblings and friends!

    Summary

    Our fully online Arabic program for high school and college students targets the novice mid and novice high proficiency levels and will consist of daily synchronous and asynchronous language learning experiences (Mon-Thurs). We aim to enroll up to 38 students, providing a total of 100 hours of instruction over five weeks of online language study. The theme of our updated program is classical Arabic literary heritage. By the end of our program, students will know about genres of Arabic literature, famous persons, interesting locales, and will be able to talk with others about cultural exchange and influence, and will have enhanced their abilities in the modes of communication as a foundation for further intermediate level study. They will be able to present information on historical eras and figures, stories from Arab culture, and aspects of daily life that have changed and/or remained the same.

    Summary

    At the conclusion of the program, our students will have the linguistic and cultural skills necessary to interact with Arabic speakers on basic, everyday topics, especially the topic of food. We will recruit 20 or 22 students to participate in this intensive STARTALK Arabic program. Our participants will be high school seniors and college students (grades 12-16). Their proficiency level in Arabic will be Novice-High by the conclusion of the program. We will conduct about 94 instructional hours throughout a four-week period, to extend from June 25th to July 19th, 2018.

    Summary

    The 2018 STARTALK Denton ISD intensive Russian and Chinese Summer School, Welcome to My World, will provide four weeks and 120 instructional hours of student-centered learning and instruction in Russian and Chinese respectively to 11th and 12th graders and UNT undergraduate students at the Novice level.

    Upon the successful completion of the summer school, our students will achieve Novice level of language proficiency in Russian or Chinese respectively, will be able to communicate appropriately at the Novice level and will enhance their cultural awareness.

    We believe that the additional benefit of earning up to six college credit hours through a College placement test free of charge and the opportunity to become part of our UNT learning community will encourage the program participants to continue their studies of Russian or Chinese in college.

    Summary

    This four-week (July 9-August 3, 2018) intensive Swahili language program will take 20 students on a journey to explore East Africa. The program will integrate culture and content to help students gain Swahili language skills. Interactive classroom instructions will take place Mondays to Thursdays, and Fridays students will take instructional field trips to The Wilds, Hocking Hills and around the Athens vicinity. The participants, who can be either undergraduate or college ready high school students, will enroll in either elementary or intermediate classes for a total of 108 hours of instruction. Learning experiences will help students develop linguistic and cultural competence and prepare them for a visit to East Africa.

    At the end of the program, students will earn four semester hours of college credit, and students in the Elementary class will be able to perform at the Novice Mid proficiency level, while students in the Intermediate class will be able to perform at the Novice High/Intermediate Low levels according to the NCSSFL-ACTFL Global Can-Do Benchmarks.

    This non-residential program will draw participants will be drawn from Ohio University undergraduate students, students from other four-year institutions in Ohio, as well as high school students from schools within the vicinity of Ohio University.

    Summary

    The theme of the program will be "Preparation for a Business Trip to Russia," focusing on Russian language and cultural understanding in the business world for future business leaders which gives students the necessary skills for a successful trip to Russia by providing learner-centered language instruction using topics and situations related to students' professional goals. This theme will help students explore the use of the Russian language in the professional environment, learn about contemporary business opportunities in Russia, and understand the norms that are prevalent in Russian business culture today. The duration of the program is three weeks, for a total of ninety instructional hours and will be offered to local high school students and UCF undergraduate students, with a target enrollment of fifty participants. The participants will be divided into three groups of Novice Low to Novice-Mid level, with the latter group providing more in-depth content for returning STARTALK participants and those with some knowledge of the target language. The resource materials for future STARTALK Russian language programs will be developed and shared in the future language conferences and publication series continuing " Picturing Russia: A Research Guide to Russian Culture" and "Language and Culture of doing Business in Russia".

    Summary

    STARTALK 2017 - Personal and Professional Connections in Russian, a second-year Russian four-week summer program, will be held June 25 – July 20, 2018 at the United States Naval Academy (USNA) and will focus on developing and expanding communicative competence and cultural awareness in midshipmen at USNA and students from nearby Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) and other local schools. The program will meet for 6.5 hours per day for 20 days (a total of 130 instructional hours) and will offer four weeks of intensive Russian instruction at the Novice-High to Intermediate-Low level. There will be 20 student participants who will have completed two semesters of Russian. They will work on developing their Russian for future professional and personal development. The outcomes of the program are successful completion of the course and continued pursuit of formal and informal study of Russian.

    Summary

    North Central College proposes a student and teacher combination program in 2018. The student program will be 14-day hybrid non-residential program with two-level classes. The Level One (novice-low) program is "Journey to the Great Wall." The Level Two (novice-mid/high) program is “Working Together with China.” Up to 24 high school students will be enrolled in the program. The program will start with a half-day orientation on June 16, 2018, and then followed by a one-week online instruction and one-week full day onsite activities. It will be concluded by a series of online interactive activities. Some additional excursions and opportunities to practice skills learned for a total of 90 hours of instructional time. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will have earned college certificate.

    Summary

    The program uses the best practices of the blended model to offer a 5 week summer language and culture program for 20 high school and college level students with little or no background. High school students who do well in the summer session may continue in the program and earn 3 college credits by taking a post-summer 10 week online course. College students with satisfactory learning performance will be accepted into the Chinese Flagship program. The program enables American students to receive quality instruction in Chinese language from native speakers while taking part in rich cultural activities; students will receive up to a total of 110 instructional hours. Students will achieve at least one sub-level of proficiency growth in speaking by the end of the summer program as demonstrated by the STAMP test results.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Arabic Academy at Penn State is an ambitious, multifaceted program for 20 high school and college students to take an introductory college course in Arabic. For 4 weeks (June-July), a multinational instructional team provides instruction in Arabic for 5.5 hours daily Monday through Thursday, an additional 2 hours of afternoon immersion twice a week, and 4.5 hours on Friday, for a total of 113 available instructional hours. Upon successful completion, students earn 4 Penn State credits (one semester of college Arabic).
    Through student-centered, task-based, and communicative activities, students will become acquainted with Arabic cultures and learn to communicate in Arabic. Starting with no prior knowledge of Arabic, students will reach novice-mid or novice-high level.
