    Summary

    STARTALK 2017 in comparisons to our previous programs, will put greater emphasis on the use of mobile technology in education. Our outcomes will be: (1) the creation of innovative learning materials based on contemporary methodology, such as serial lectures for students of Russian based 21st Century curriculum topics; (2) use of technological tools and mobile devices, such as iPads and tablets, in a learner-centered classroom and for distance learning; (3) the creation of technology-mediated Learning Objects to be added to our virtual library of Learning Objects. We plan to accept 16 participants who are teachers of Russian at K-16 level this year with 120 instructional hours. The duration of program will be 5 weeks.

    STARTALK Teaching Chinese with Authentic Materials

    Summary

    The North Central College Chinese program will partner with a local high school to provide a STARTALK teacher program for 12 pre-service and in-service teachers of Mandarin Chinese with varied teaching experience. This program, focusing on equipping participants with strategies and tools in selecting and applying authentic materials in Chinese language classrooms, is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online formats. The program, with total instructional time of over 90 hours, starts out with a two-day on-site training, is followed by a four-week online training, and wraps up with the second two-day on-site workshop. To ensure the continued support for participants’ application of training content, they will be guided step by step to design their teaching plan and integrate what they will have learned from the training to their future teaching through reflections, group work and hands-on activities . The expected outcomes are that participants will be able to select age-appropriate authentic materials for their lessons, scaffold student learning through effective teaching strategies and tools, and develop performance-based assessment using authentic materials.
