    Summary

    The proposed Chicago Public Schools (CPS) STARTALK program will provide a rich, hands-on, language immersion program in Arabic and Chinese to 30 high school students (9th-11th grade) who have already completed one to two years of Arabic instruction or two to three years of Chinese instruction. The program will be housed at the University of Chicago (UChicago) campus and classes will be conducted by U of C instructors. The program is intended to give students an opportunity to practice and improve their language skills through real-life applications and varied authentic experiences in alignment with STARTALK principles. Participants will attend classes Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, starting July 2 and ending July 27, 2018 with a total of 95 hours of instruction.

    Summary

    AKEEP STARTALK: Cultural Treasure Hunters is a 3-week (15 days) program by the Alabama-Korea Education & Economic Partnership (AKEEP) to provide Korean language and cultural instruction to forty-eight (48), 4th – 6th-grade Novice-low, non-heritage students. By the end of 120 instructional hours, students will perform at Novice Mid ACTFL language levels and will be able to greet and introduce themselves to Korean-native speakers using culturally appropriate register, titles, and gestures. They will be able to write, read, and recite the names of seven primary colors, compare Korean traditional clothing, and be able to give and react to directional commands. They will be able to identify familiar foods and unique Korean ingredients found in cultural dishes. Finally, they will learn practice presentational skills through learning two Korean children's songs, a traditional dance to perform for friends and family, and presenting on Korean artifacts found in a museum.

    Summary

    The 2018 STARTALK DCPS Language and Culture Institute program will serve 100 DCPS students in Middle and High School (grades 6-8 and 9-12) in a 5 week Chinese instruction program beginning June 25 and ending July 27, 2018. Students will receive between 120 and 132 hours of instruction and will earn a 1.0 World Language Credit. Students will not only receive quality language instruction, but will put their language and cultural learning to use in various opportunities that only the nation's capital can offer through partnership with a variety of embassies, museums, and cultural organizations who will make learning come alive for students. The program will culminate with a final presentation where students have an opportunity to demonstrate all they have learned and celebrate d Chinese cultures.

    Summary

    The 2018 STARTALK funds will guarantee continued Arabic culture and language learning opportunities at Bell and Hamilton High Schools (levels I and heritage speakers, grades 7th through 12th). The program will offer 60 students the opportunity to receive Arabic immersed instruction of 90 hours (75 hours of face-to face and 15 hours) asynchronous learning model enhanced through culture, technology, and social media from July 16, 2018 to July 18th , 2018. The goal of the program is to increase oral and written proficiency by one sub-level on the ACTFL Proficiency Scales (Arabic I NM-NH, Heritage IM-IH). We anticipate that approximately 95% of our Level I, and heritage students will continue in our 2018- 2019 academic year to increase enrollment in Arabic I and Arabic III, and IV Honors programs offered by the two schools.

    Summary

    The STARTALK Student Summer Program in Kansas City offers three-week intensive language and culture learning experience to 60 novice learners from grades 3-8, both true beginners and students with some prior proficiency in Chinese, in greater Kansas City metro area and neighboring rural areas in the state of Missouri. Underserved, marginalized and rural population are encouraged specifically to apply and participate.

    Based on students’ age group, the program will be divided into four sections, two for rising 3rd-5th graders and two for rising 6th-8th graders. To make the classroom activities relevant to students and motivate them in their learning, each section will use a thematic curriculum; the theme for rising 3rd - 5th graders is “What We Know about Chinese New Year”; the theme for rising 6th - 8th graders is “Let’s Plan a Trip to China.”

    Students will attend seven hours of activities daily consisting of three-and-half-hour task-based language learning classes, one-and-half-hour cultural seminar and hands-on activities, half-hour morning Chinese Taichi exercise, half-hour separate group activity, and a one-hour complimentary lunch, for a total of 105 instructional hours for three weeks.

    During our three-week intensive study, students will reach communicative proficiency, exemplifying the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) via our standard-based, student-centered, language-immersed and culturally-enriched curricula.

    Summary

    The 13-day Chinese and Turkish programs with a total of 91 hours instruction in Chinese or 91 hours instruction in Turkish will allow 24 middle school and high school students (grades 6-12) who have limited or no previous experience in Chinese to attain novice-mid proficiency in Chinese and 10 high school juniors and seniors (grades 11-12) along with college freshmen and sophomores who have limited or no previous experience in Turkish to attain novice-mid proficiency in Turkish. During each 7-hour day, students will engage in immersive language learning, practicing Chinese Martial Arts or Turkish Taekwondo, drumming, and music. The theme “A Musical Journey through China, a Musical Journey through Turkey” will provide ample opportunities for communication about food, geography, families, music, and basic greetings and introductions; learning about the cultures and content of the Chinese/Turkish traditions, music and sports; connecting to art and history. A field trip to the Atlanta Chinatown or a local Turkish market will provide a rich exchange of activities with native speakers and an authentic opportunity for interpersonal communication. By the end of the program, students will reach "novice-mid" in all modes of communication based on the ACTFL proficiency guidelines and will be able to handle many authentic tasks, including telling and asking about basic personal information, commenting on their favorite Chinese or Turkish food, cities and musical instruments, designing itineraries, and performing skits and songs in Chinese or Turkish.

    Summary

    The Startalk funded Chinese Dragon's Math Maze - Building Community through Kindness Program will enable approximately 100 children from the City of Springfield and some surrounding communities to receive introductory as well as ongoing instruction in Chinese Language and Culture from grades K-12 . The program will run daily from 8:30 to 2:30 for 15 days, for a total of 90 instructional contact hours from Monday, July 9th through Friday, July 27th, 2018. A pre-program, baseline assessment will determine students' prior knowledge and will be used for appropriate placement of students. While high school students will participate in the online Lingua Folio assessment, a culminating student performance activity for ALL students will serve as a summative outcome indicating mastery of math content and skills, as well as knowledge of language and culture.

    Summary

    The STARTALK UNR Chinese Language and Culture Program plans to host 30 local middle and high school students (grades 7-12) and offer two level courses for new students and returning students. The course will last three weeks (June 12-29, 2018), meeting Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with 84 instructional hours. Students will study Chinese language through the theme of Chinese New Year: the Customs, Legend and Drama. Upon the successful completion of the STARTALK program, students of Level I will reach Novice Mid and students of Level II will reach Novice High. Throughout the program, students will engage in hands-on activities in the target language as well as gain the cultural understanding in the global context.

    Summary

    The program “Arabic in New Mexico: A Common Past and Shared Future” will provide Arabic instruction for 36 students grades 6-12 at the Novice and Intermediate levels over the course of three weeks (91 contact hours). Novice students will reach the Novice Mid level with some performance at the Novice High level and Intermediate students will reach the Intermediate Low level with some performance at the Intermediate Mid level in all language skills. The program will be guided by the World-Readiness Standards for Language Learning and use performance-based assessment. Through classroom instruction, community interactions, and extracurricular activities, students will develop a greater understanding of past and present cultural connections between New Mexico and the Arab world.
