    Summary

    This three week program is intended to prepare an estimated 40 pre-kindergarten students to enter a Mandarin Chinese Dual Language Immersion Kindergarten in September 2018. It is anticipated that the students will be both pre-literate and have little to no previous knowledge of the language. Program outcomes will include student ability to communicate in all three modes at the Novice Mid proficiency level. The program will run from 9:00 am till 12:00 noon for three weeks (14 days because of July 4th) for a total of 42 instructional hours.

    Summary

    The MSCSA employs a 4-week blended program aims to provide a linguistically and culturally enriched learning experiences to 50 novice range proficiency level students in grade 6-12. The 3-week face-to-face program will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 9 to July 27, 2018, at the Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo with the subsequent one-week (July 30-August 3) online program requiring students to devote at least two hours daily in learning the language. A total of 115 hours of instructional time will be provided to participants in this program. Depending on their entry level, students are expected to advance their Chinese language proficiency at least to novice-mid, novice-high, and Intermediate-low levels by the end of the program. The student program coincides with the major time frame of the teacher program, thus enabling collaborative teaching and learning for the 2 groups of participants and providing frequent opportunities for students to have individualized attention, support, and authentic/spontaneous experiences in speaking Mandarin. Student-centered learning will be emphasized in an immersion setting using a variety of authentic materials that will prepare students to engage in culturally significant communicative activities. During and after the program, online LinguaFolio will be used to continue the development process of Chinese language among students. After the 15-day learning journey, learners will gain confidence in using Mandarin Chinese to communicate with native speakers on familiar topics in daily life. Students who fully participate in the program (total 115 hours) and participate in the study abroad program (optional with additional cost) can meet at least one credit of world language high school graduation requirement under the Michigan Merit Curriculum. All costs including snacks and lunches are covered by the program. The application deadline is May 25, 2018, and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

    Summary

    STARTALK WeChat: Chinese School Edition is a non-residential 3-week, 90 contact hour Chinese language program for rising 6th graders through rising college freshman in the greater Charlotte, N.C. area. Applying students should have less than 2 years studying Mandarin Chinese in formal or informal contexts (including speaking Chinese at home). Students will work in classes with small teacher to student ratios (1:5). The program theme, WeChat, is the most popular Chinese social media application and is used by over a billion people worldwide. Use of this app throughout the program will enable students to interact with their peers and teachers in a variety of familiar ways (sharing pictures, instant messaging, posting statuses about what they are doing/how they are feeling, etc.). The program will also include a field trip in which students will enjoy the opportunity to apply their new knowledge in multiple settings, experiencing Chinese culture right in their own backyards! The program will culminate in a shared celebration of student learning open to parents and siblings. Students will design and manage activity stations to show off all of their new language and cultural knowledge--by teaching what they know to their parents, siblings and friends!

    Summary

    The proposed Chicago Public Schools (CPS) STARTALK program will provide a rich, hands-on, language immersion program in Arabic and Chinese to 30 high school students (9th-11th grade) who have already completed one to two years of Arabic instruction or two to three years of Chinese instruction. The program will be housed at the University of Chicago (UChicago) campus and classes will be conducted by U of C instructors. The program is intended to give students an opportunity to practice and improve their language skills through real-life applications and varied authentic experiences in alignment with STARTALK principles. Participants will attend classes Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, starting July 2 and ending July 27, 2018 with a total of 95 hours of instruction.

    Pitt STARTALK will be administered by the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian and East European Studies (REES) and offer an intensive four-week residential program from June 17 to July 13, 2018, with 160 formal and informal instructional hours for 20 students entering grades 10 through 12. REES is partnering with three high schools that offer academic year Russian language programs (Pittsburgh Brashear High School, Pritzker College Prep, and The Noble Academy) to recruit participants. The curriculum will be based on the theme “Soon to Russia!”, through which the Pitt STARTALK students will prepare to spend an academic year studying abroad in Russia. Instruction will be performance-based and emphasize acquisition of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, with a goal of ACTFL Novice Mid to Novice High proficiency across modalities for students in Russian I and Intermediate Low proficiency for students in Russian II. Other anticipated outcomes include increased cultural knowledge and college readiness.

    AKEEP STARTALK: Cultural Treasure Hunters is a 3-week (15 days) program by the Alabama-Korea Education & Economic Partnership (AKEEP) to provide Korean language and cultural instruction to forty-eight (48), 4th – 6th-grade Novice-low, non-heritage students. By the end of 120 instructional hours, students will perform at Novice Mid ACTFL language levels and will be able to greet and introduce themselves to Korean-native speakers using culturally appropriate register, titles, and gestures. They will be able to write, read, and recite the names of seven primary colors, compare Korean traditional clothing, and be able to give and react to directional commands. They will be able to identify familiar foods and unique Korean ingredients found in cultural dishes. Finally, they will learn practice presentational skills through learning two Korean children's songs, a traditional dance to perform for friends and family, and presenting on Korean artifacts found in a museum.

    The 2018 STARTALK DCPS Language and Culture Institute program will serve 100 DCPS students in Middle and High School (grades 6-8 and 9-12) in a 5 week Chinese instruction program beginning June 25 and ending July 27, 2018. Students will receive between 120 and 132 hours of instruction and will earn a 1.0 World Language Credit. Students will not only receive quality language instruction, but will put their language and cultural learning to use in various opportunities that only the nation's capital can offer through partnership with a variety of embassies, museums, and cultural organizations who will make learning come alive for students. The program will culminate with a final presentation where students have an opportunity to demonstrate all they have learned and celebrate d Chinese cultures.

    “Junior Chef: Hansik Tour” is Korean language program for 15 novices and 15 intermediates in grade 3-5. During this program, students will enjoy differentiated instruction under thematic unit focusing on Korean food, Hansik, for 110 hours of instruction over a five-week period. Through this program, students advance their Korean language skills in 3 different modes while gaining knowledge about Korean food through project-based learning to create their own Korean dish collaboratively with their peers.     The 2018 STARTALK funds will guarantee continued Arabic culture and language learning opportunities at Bell and Hamilton High Schools (levels I and heritage speakers, grades 7th through 12th). The program will offer 60 students the opportunity to receive Arabic immersed instruction of 90 hours (75 hours of face-to face and 15 hours) asynchronous learning model enhanced through culture, technology, and social media from July 16, 2018 to July 18th , 2018. The goal of the program is to increase oral and written proficiency by one sub-level on the ACTFL Proficiency Scales (Arabic I NM-NH, Heritage IM-IH). We anticipate that approximately 95% of our Level I, and heritage students will continue in our 2018- 2019 academic year to increase enrollment in Arabic I and Arabic III, and IV Honors programs offered by the two schools.

    Summary

    Huayuan Chinese Academy’s “STARTALK STEM-Integrated Chinese Learning Program” will immerse 45 rising 2nd through 5th graders in a Chinese language and culture environment for a total of 91 instructional hours over 3 weeks, June 25-July 13, 2018, followed by a 10-week fall Extension Program. The curriculum is constructed around the storyline of the fictional character Water Baby’s fun life, magic show, and adventures, with the STEM-based theme “Explore Water, an Essential Element of Life.” The curriculum integrates hands-on linguistic, cultural, and scientific activities, all designed based on the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. At the end of the program, students will be able to greet each other, exchange simple information about themselves and their family members, as well as topics related to three states of water, water cycle, and water pollution, and follow simple steps in Chinese for scientific experiments.
