- July 31, 2017 – August 18, 2017: (Face-to-face)
- Binghamton University, Binghamton, NY
From July 31 to August 18, fifty students in grades 6-12 will learn Chinese language through hands-on Beijing Opera experiential learning from 8:30 am to 4 pm daily Monday-Friday, for a total of 112.5 hours of instruction. Four types of classes—one beginner (new non-heritage, divided into two sessions), one novice-mid (return non-heritage), one intermediate (new heritage), and one advanced (return heritage)––will be offered, along with other hands-on cultural activities, such as costume-making, prop-making, lantern-making, shadow puppet-making, calligraphy and painting, food preparation and tasting, bookbinding, and more. The language instruction, Beijing Opera learning and the other cultural activities will take place in a truly integrated fashion. The program will culminate in a performance of the Beijing Opera excerpt Monkey King Battling in Heaven, which will integrate all aspects of the program and give the students a chance to show what they will have learned over the 3-week program.
