Applying students should have less than 2 years studying Mandarin Chinese in formal or informal contexts (including speaking Chinese at home). Students will work in classes with small teacher to student ratios (1:5). The program theme, WeChat, is the most popular Chinese social media application and is used by over a billion people worldwide. Use of this app throughout the program will enable students to interact with their peers and teachers in a variety of familiar ways (sharing pictures, instant messaging, posting statuses about what they are doing/how they are feeling, etc.). The program will also include a field trip in which students will enjoy the opportunity to apply their new knowledge in multiple settings, experiencing Chinese culture right in their own backyards! The program will culminate in a shared celebration of student learning open to parents and siblings. Students will design and manage activity stations to show off all of their new language and cultural knowledge--by teaching what they know to their parents, siblings and friends!
